Fish schooling as a basis for vertical axis wind turbine farm design
Most wind farms consist of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) due to the
high power coefficient (mechanical power output divided by the power of the
free-stream air through the turbine cross-sectional area) of an isolated
turbine. However when in close proximity to neighbouring turbines, HAWTs suffer
from a reduced power coefficient. In contrast, previous research on vertical
axis wind turbines (VAWTs) suggests that closely-spaced VAWTs may experience
only small decreases (or even increases) in an individual turbine's power
coefficient when placed in close proximity to neighbours, thus yielding much
higher power outputs for a given area of land. A potential flow model of
inter-VAWT interactions is developed to investigate the effect of changes in
VAWT spatial arrangement on the array performance coefficient, which compares
the expected average power coefficient of turbines in an array to a
spatially-isolated turbine. A geometric arrangement based on the configuration
of shed vortices in the wake of schooling fish is shown to significantly
increase the array performance coefficient based upon an array of 16x16 wind
turbines. Results suggest increases in power output of over one order of

The manufacturing sector is leaving the West for Asia’s low wages and good working culture. Europe would be better off keeping these manufacturing activities, slowing down wage inflation and what is more, letting a young, cheaper workforce from the East settle down within their borders. This would aid in preserving the diverse economic structure which has been characteristic for Europe.Beside the economic growth there are two more concepts which have turned into the “holy cows” of economics during the last fifty years. One is the need to constantly improve labor productivity and the other is increasing competitiveness of nations. The high labor productivity of some countries, induces severe unemployment in the globalized world. In the other hand it is high time we understood that it is not competition, but cooperation that brings more happiness to humanity.Should we still opt for “happiness” and “sanity”, it is quite obvious that we all should, in economists’ terms, define our individual welfare functions corresponding to our own set of values, staying free from the influence of media, advertisements and fashion. The cornerstone to all this is the intelligent citizen who prefers local goods and services
Discovery of Five New Pulsars in Archival Data
Reprocessing of the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey has resulted in the
discovery of five previously unknown pulsars and several as-yet-unconfirmed
candidates. PSR J0922-52 has a period of 9.68 ms and a DM of 122.4 pc cm^-3.
PSR J1147-66 has a period of 3.72 ms and a DM of 133.8 pc cm^-3. PSR J1227-6208
has a period of 34.53 ms, a DM of 362.6 pc cm^-3, is in a 6.7 day binary orbit,
and was independently detected in an ongoing high-resolution Parkes survey by
Thornton et al. and also in independent processing by Einstein@Home volunteers.
PSR J1546-59 has a period of 7.80 ms and a DM of 168.3 pc cm^-3. PSR J1725-3853
is an isolated 4.79-ms pulsar with a DM of 158.2 pc cm^-3. These pulsars were
likely missed in earlier processing efforts due to their high DMs and short
periods and the large number of candidates that needed to be looked through.
These discoveries suggest that further pulsars are awaiting discovery in the

The loschmidt index
We study the nodes of the wavefunction overlap between ground states of a parameterdependent Hamiltonian. These nodes are topological, and we can use them to analyze in a unifying way both equilibrium and dynamical quantum phase transitions in multiband systems. We define the Loschmidt index as the number of nodes in this overlap and discuss the relationship between this index and the wrapping number of a closed auxiliary hypersurface. This relationship allows us to compute this index systematically, using an integral representation of the wrapping number. We comment on the relationship between the Loschmidt index and other well-established topological numbers. As an example, we classify the equilibrium and dynamical quantum phase transitions of the XY model by counting the nodes in the wavefunction overlaps
Multi-Dimensional, Compressible Viscous Flow on a Moving Voronoi Mesh
Numerous formulations of finite volume schemes for the Euler and
Navier-Stokes equations exist, but in the majority of cases they have been
developed for structured and stationary meshes. In many applications, more
flexible mesh geometries that can dynamically adjust to the problem at hand and
move with the flow in a (quasi) Lagrangian fashion would, however, be highly
desirable, as this can allow a significant reduction of advection errors and an
accurate realization of curved and moving boundary conditions. Here we describe
a novel formulation of viscous continuum hydrodynamics that solves the
equations of motion on a Voronoi mesh created by a set of mesh-generating
points. The points can move in an arbitrary manner, but the most natural motion
is that given by the fluid velocity itself, such that the mesh dynamically
adjusts to the flow. Owing to the mathematical properties of the Voronoi
tessellation, pathological mesh-twisting effects are avoided. Our
implementation considers the full Navier-Stokes equations and has been realized
in the AREPO code both in 2D and 3D. We propose a new approach to compute
accurate viscous fluxes for a dynamic Voronoi mesh, and use this to formulate a
finite volume solver of the Navier-Stokes equations. Through a number of test
problems, including circular Couette flow and flow past a cylindrical obstacle,
we show that our new scheme combines good accuracy with geometric flexibility,
and hence promises to be competitive with other highly refined Eulerian
methods. This will in particular allow astrophysical applications of the AREPO
code where physical viscosity is important, such as in the hot plasma in galaxy

Measurement of the Longitudinal Spin Transfer to Lambda and Anti-Lambda Hyperons in Polarised Muon DIS
The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda
hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an
unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin
transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation
region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x
and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while
D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The
resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and
D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. These results are discussed in the
frame of recent model calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
The COMPASS Experiment at CERN
The COMPASS experiment makes use of the CERN SPS high-intensitymuon and
hadron beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure and the
spectroscopy of hadrons. One or more outgoing particles are detected in
coincidence with the incoming muon or hadron. A large polarized target inside a
superconducting solenoid is used for the measurements with the muon beam.
Outgoing particles are detected by a two-stage, large angle and large momentum
range spectrometer. The setup is built using several types of tracking
detectors, according to the expected incident rate, required space resolution
and the solid angle to be covered. Particle identification is achieved using a
RICH counter and both hadron and electromagnetic calorimeters. The setup has
been successfully operated from 2002 onwards using a muon beam. Data with a
hadron beam were also collected in 2004. This article describes the main
features and performances of the spectrometer in 2004; a short summary of the

Corresponding States of Structural Glass Formers
The variation with respect to temperature T of transport properties of 58
fragile structural glass forming liquids (68 data sets in total) are analyzed
and shown to exhibit a remarkable degree of universality. In particular,
super-Arrhenius behaviors of all super-cooled liquids appear to collapse to one
parabola for which there is no singular behavior at any finite temperature.
This behavior is bounded by an onset temperature To above which liquid
transport has a much weaker temperature dependence. A similar collapse is also
demonstrated, over the smaller available range, for existing numerical

Inclusive cross section and double helicity asymmetry for \pi^0 production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV: Implications for the polarized gluon distribution in the proton
The PHENIX experiment presents results from the RHIC 2005 run with polarized
proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV, for inclusive \pi^0 production at
mid-rapidity. Unpolarized cross section results are given for transverse
momenta p_T=0.5 to 20 GeV/c, extending the range of published data to both
lower and higher p_T. The cross section is described well for p_T < 1 GeV/c by
an exponential in p_T, and, for p_T > 2 GeV/c, by perturbative QCD. Double
helicity asymmetries A_LL are presented based on a factor of five improvement
in uncertainties as compared to previously published results, due to both an
improved beam polarization of 50%, and to higher integrated luminosity. These
measurements are sensitive to the gluon polarization in the proton, and exclude

High p_T Direct Photon and pi^0 Triggered Azimuthal Jet Correlations in sqrt(s)=200 GeV p+p Collisions
Correlations of charged hadrons of 1 < pT < 10 GeV/c with high pT direct
photons and pi^ 0 mesons in the range 5 <pT < 15 GeV/c are used to study jet
fragmentation in the photon+jet and di-jet channels, respectively. The
magnitude of the partonic transverse momentum, kT, is obtained by comparing to
a model incorporating a Gaussian kT smearing. The sensitivity of the associated
charged hadron spectra to the underlying fragmentation function is tested and
the data are compared to calculations using recent global fit results. The
shape of the direct photon-associated hadron spectrum as well as its charge
asymmetry are found to be consistent with a sample dominated by quark-gluon
Compton scattering. No significant evidence of fragmentation photon correlated
