Sloth: America\u27s Ironic Structural Vice
Individualism is a popular cultural trope in the United States, often touted for its promotion of industriousness and rejection of laziness. This essay argues that, ironically, America\u27s brand of individualism actually promotes a more fundamental form of the very vice it purports to oppose. To make this case, the essay defines the unique form of individualism in the United States and then retrieves the classical definition of sloth as a vice against charity (not diligence), contrasting Aquinas and Barth with Weber to demonstrate that this peculiarly American individualist impulse undermines civic charity by reaping the benefits of civic relationships while denying any concomitant responsibilities. Identifying this narrative of individualism as a structural vice, the essay proposes structural remedies for reinvigorating civic charity, solidarity, and the common good in the United States

Maximum likelihood method for fitting the Fundamental Plane of the 6dF Galaxy Survey
We have used over 10,000 early-type galaxies from the 6dF Galaxy Survey
(6dFGS) to construct the Fundamental Plane across the optical and near-infrared
passbands. We demonstrate that a maximum likelihood fit to a multivariate
Gaussian model for the distribution of galaxies in size, surface brightness and
velocity dispersion can properly account for selection effects, censoring and
observational errors, leading to precise and unbiased parameters for the
Fundamental Plane and its intrinsic scatter. This method allows an accurate and
robust determination of the dependencies of the Fundamental Plane on variations

The conversation: developing confidence to provide end of life care in Salford nursing homes
The study was funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing and partly by Salford Primary Care Trust. A realistic evaluation design was used to collect data using a range of approaches, from before and after surveys of confidence in delivering end of life care, to participant observation and interviews. A total of 43 people were interviewed involving both staff, residents and relatives.
Key Messages
a) Significant resources are needed to engage staff, residents and relatives/carers with the idea of advance care planning b) Care home staff are optimistic about involving residents and relatives in planning care at the end of life and some relatives become very involved in care
c) Clearly registered nurses and other care home workers such as care assistants have different roles, but the overlap between these and the appropriate boundaries would benefit from further work d) Talking to residents and relatives about their feelings and wishes for care at the end of life remains especially difficult, but education and training in key skills and knowledge can engender both ability and motivation e) Care homes need strong and well-informed leadership in order to implement the Gold Standards Framework f) Placing a relative in a care home involves strain and an ability to compromise ‘there’s no perfect place’ g) Advance care planning can reduce the distress and the number of inappropriate hospital admissions, but is challenging in the face of staff rotation and out of hours medical staff being unpredictable
h) The principles of the Gold Standards Framework are widely seen as sensible, but clinical challenges include diagnosing and predicting dying trajectories,

Sub-Natural-Linewidth Quantum Interference Features Observed in Photoassociation of a Thermal Gas
By driving photoassociation transitions we form electronically excited
molecules (Na) from ultra-cold (50-300 K) Na atoms. Using a second
laser to drive transitions from the excited state to a level in the molecular
ground state, we are able to split the photoassociation line and observe
features with a width smaller than the natural linewidth of the excited
molecular state. The quantum interference which gives rise to this effect is
analogous to that which leads to electromagnetically induced transparency in
three level atomic systems, but here one of the ground states is a
pair of free atoms while the other is a bound molecule. The linewidth is
limited primarily by the finite temperature of the atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
The segregation of starless and protostellar clumps in the Hi-GAL l=224deg region
Stars form in dense, dusty structures, which are embedded in larger clumps of
molecular clouds often showing a clear filamentary structure on large scales (>
1pc). One of the best-studied regions in the Hi-GAL survey can be observed
toward the l=224deg field. Here, a filamentary region has been studied and it
has been found that protostellar clumps are mostly located along the main
filament, whereas starless clumps are detected off this filament and are
instead found on secondary, less prominent filaments. We want to investigate
this segregation effect and how it may affect the clumps properties. We mapped
the 12CO(1-0) line and its main three isotopologues toward the two most
prominent filaments observed toward the l=224deg field using the Mopra radio
telescope, in order to set observational constraints on the dynamics of these
structures and the associated starless and protostellar clumps. Compared to the
starless clumps, the protostellar clumps are more luminous, more turbulent and
lie in regions where the filamentary ambient gas shows larger linewidths. We
see evidence of gas flowing along the main filament, but we do not find any
signs of accretion flow from the filament onto the Hi-GAL clumps. We analyze
the radial column density profile of the filaments and their gravitational
stability. The more massive and highly fragmented main filament appears to be
thermally supercritical and gravitationally bound, assuming that all of the
non-thermal motion is contributing thermal-like support, suggesting a later
stage of evolution compared to the secondary filament. The status and
evolutionary phase of the Hi-GAL clumps would then appear to correlate with

A Search for Biomolecules in Sagittarius B2 (LMH) with the ATCA
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to conduct a search for
the simplest amino acid, glycine (conformers I and II), and the simple chiral
molecule propylene oxide at 3-mm in the Sgr B2 LMH. We searched 15 portions of
spectrum between 85 and 91 GHz, each of 64 MHz bandwidth, and detected 58
emission features and 21 absorption features, giving a line density of 75
emission lines and 25 absorption lines per GHz stronger than the 5 sigma level
of 110 mJy. Of these, 19 are transitions previously detected in the
interstellar medium, and we have made tentative assignments of a further 23
features to molecular transitions. However, as many of these involve molecules
not previously detected in the ISM, these assignments cannot be regarded with
confidence. Given the median line width of 6.5 km/s in Sgr B2 LMH, we find that
the spectra have reached a level where there is line confusion, with about 1/5
of the band being covered with lines. Although we did not confidently detect
either glycine or propylene oxide, we can set 3 sigma upper limits for most
transitions searched. We also show that if glycine is present in the Sgr B2 LMH
at the level of N = 4 x 10^{14} cm^{-2} found by Kuan et al. (2003) in their
reported detection of glycine, it should have been easily detected with the
ATCA synthesized beam size of 17.0 x 3.4 arcsec^{2}, if it were confined to the
scale of the LMH continuum source (< 5 arcsec). This thus puts a strong upper
limit on any small-scale glycine emission in Sgr B2, for both of conformers I
