A Measurement of the Interference Structure Function, R_LT, for the 12C(e,e'p) reaction in the Quasielastic Region
The coincidence cross-section and the interference structure function, R_LT,
were measured for the 12C(e,e'p) 11B reaction at quasielastic kinematics and
central momentum transfer of q=400 MeV/c. The measurement was at an opening
angle of theta_pq=11 degrees, covering a range in missing energy of E_m = 0 to
65 MeV. The R_LT structure function is found to be consistent with zero for E_m
> 50 MeV, confirming an earlier study which indicated that R_L vanishes in this
region. The integrated strengths of the p- and s-shell are compared with a
Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation calculation. The s-shell strength and
shape are compared with a Hartree Fock-Random Phase Approximation calculation.
The DWIA calculation overestimates the cross sections for p- and s-shell proton
knockout as expected, but surprisingly agrees with the extracted R_LT value for
both shells. The HF-RPA calculation describes the data more consistently, which

Exponential Distribution of Locomotion Activity in Cell Cultures
In vitro velocities of several cell types have been measured using computer
controlled video microscopy, which allowed to record the cells' trajectories
over several days. On the basis of our large data sets we show that the
locomotion activity displays a universal exponential distribution. Thus, motion
resulting from complex cellular processes can be well described by an
unexpected, but very simple distribution function. A simple phenomenological
model based on the interaction of various cellular processes and finite ATP
production rate is proposed to explain these experimental results.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
The industrious revolution, the industriousness discourse, and the development of modern economies
ABSTRACTThe idea of industriousness has been an ever-recurring issue since Max Weber launched it as a putative explanation of the advent of economic modernity. The notion of ‘industrious revolution’ has provoked a renewed flourishing of publications focusing on this issue. Although most historians agree on the emergence of industriousness in seventeenth-century Europe, there is no consensus regarding the chronology, hence the real causes, of this mental and discursive shift. This article emphasizes the problematic role played by literary evidences in these social and cultural models of diffusion of new consumer values and desires. It then establishes the timing of the emergence of the ‘industriousness discourse’ using an original approach to diffusion based both on the quantitative analysis of very large corpora and a close reading of seventeenth-century economic pamphlets and educational literature. It concludes first that there was not one but several competing discourses on industriousness. It then identifies two crucial hinges which closely match the chronology proposed by Allen and Muldrew, but refutes that championed by de Vries and McCloskey. The industrious revolution as described by these authors would have happened both too late to fit its intellectual roots and too early to signal the beginning of a ‘consumer revolution’.This work was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research CouncilThis is the author accepted manuscript. Relativistic effects and two-body currents in using out-of-plane detection
Measurements of the reaction were performed
using an 800-MeV polarized electron beam at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator
and with the out-of-plane magnetic spectrometers (OOPS). The
longitudinal-transverse, and , and the
transverse-transverse, , interference responses at a missing momentum
of 210 MeV/c were simultaneously extracted in the dip region at Q=0.15
(GeV/c). On comparison to models of deuteron electrodisintegration, the
data clearly reveal strong effects of relativity and final-state interactions,
and the importance of the two-body meson-exchange currents and isobar
configurations. We demonstrate that these effects can be disentangled and
studied by extracting the interference response functions using the novel

Shock wave lithotripsy targeting of the kidney and pancreas does not increase the severity of metabolic syndrome in a porcine model
PURPOSE:
We determined whether shock wave lithotripsy of the kidney of pigs with metabolic syndrome would worsen glucose tolerance or increase the risk of diabetes mellitus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Nine-month-old female Ossabaw miniature pigs were fed a hypercaloric atherogenic diet to induce metabolic syndrome. At age 15 months the pigs were treated with 2,000 or 4,000 shock waves (24 kV at 120 shock waves per minute) using an unmodified HM3 lithotripter (Dornier MedTech, Kennesaw, Georgia). Shock waves were targeted to the left kidney upper pole calyx to model treatment that would also expose the pancreatic tail to shock waves. The intravenous glucose tolerance test was done in conscious fasting pigs before lithotripsy, and 1 and 2 months after lithotripsy with blood samples taken for glucose and insulin measurement.
RESULTS:
Pigs fed the hypercaloric atherogenic diet were obese, dyslipidemic, insulin resistant and glucose intolerant, consistent with metabolic syndrome. Assessments of insulin resistance, glucose tolerance and pancreatic β cell function from fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels, and the glucose and insulin response profile to the intravenous glucose tolerance test were similar before and after lithotripsy.
CONCLUSIONS:
The metabolic syndrome status of pigs treated with shock wave lithotripsy was unchanged 2 months after kidney treatment with 2,000 high amplitude shock waves or overtreatment with 4,000 high amplitude shock waves. These findings do not support a single shock wave lithotripsy treatment of the kidney as a risk factor for the onset of diabetes mellitus
Meson Exchange Currents in (e,e'p) recoil polarization observables
A study of the effects of meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations
in reactions is presented. We use a distorted wave
impulse approximation (DWIA) model where final-state interactions are treated
through a phenomenological optical potential. The model includes relativistic
corrections in the kinematics and in the electromagnetic one- and two-body
currents. The full set of polarized response functions is analyzed, as well as
the transferred polarization asymmetry. Results are presented for proton
knock-out from closed-shell nuclei, for moderate to high momentum transfer.Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures. Added physical arguments explaining the

The Impact of Major Development Projects on the Gladstone/Calliope, Fitzroy, Queensland, and Australian Economies: An Application of Input-output Analysis
Factors influencing job preferences of health workers providing obstetric care : results from discrete choice experiments in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania
BACKGROUND: Task shifting from established health professionals to mid-level providers (MLPs) (professionals who undergo shorter training in specific procedures) is one key strategy for reducing maternal and neonatal deaths. This has resulted in a growth in cadre types providing obstetric care in low and middle-income countries. Little is known about the relative importance of the different factors in determining motivation and retention amongst these cadres. METHODS: This paper presents findings from large sample (1972 respondents) discrete choice experiments to examine the employment preferences of obstetric care workers across three east African countries. RESULTS: The strongest predictors of job choice were access to continuing professional development and the presence of functioning human resources management (transparent, accountable and consistent systems for staff support, supervision and appraisal). Consistent with similar works we find pay and allowances significantly positively related to utility, but financial rewards are not as fundamental a factor underlying employment preferences as many may have previously believed. Location (urban vs rural) had the smallest average effect on utility for job choice in all three countries. CONCLUSIONS: These findings are important in the context where efforts to address the human resources crisis have focused primarily on increasing salaries and incentives, as well as providing allowances to work in rural areas
