Local structural studies of BaKFeAs using atomic pair distribution function analysis
Systematic local structural studies of BaKFeAs system are
undertaken at room temperature using atomic pair distribution function (PDF)
analysis. The local structure of the BaKFeAs is found to be
well described by the long-range structure extracted from the diffraction
experiments, but with anisotropic atomic vibrations of the constituent atoms
( = ). The crystal unit cell parameters, the
FeAs tetrahedral angle and the pnictogen height above the Fe-plane are seen
to show systematic evolution with K doping, underlining the importance of the
structural changes, in addition to the charge doping, in determining the
properties of BaKFeAs
Geometric invariant theory of syzygies, with applications to moduli spaces
We define syzygy points of projective schemes, and introduce a program of
studying their GIT stability. Then we describe two cases where we have managed
to make some progress in this program, that of polarized K3 surfaces of odd
genus, and of genus six canonical curves. Applications of our results include
effectivity statements for divisor classes on the moduli space of odd genus K3
surfaces, and a new construction in the Hassett-Keel program for the moduli
space of genus six curves.Comment: v1: 23 pages, submitted to the Proceedings of the Abel Symposium

Matrix interpretation of multiple orthogonality
In this work we give an interpretation of a (s(d + 1) + 1)-term recurrence
relation in terms of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. We rewrite
this recurrence relation in matrix form and we obtain a three-term recurrence
relation for vector polynomials with matrix coefficients. We present a matrix
interpretation of the type II multi-orthogonality conditions. We state a Favard
type theorem and the expression for the resolvent function associated to the
vector of linear functionals. Finally a reinterpretation of the type II Hermite-
Padé approximation in matrix form is given
Coupling of alpha(1)-Adrenoceptors to ERK1/2 in the Human Prostate
Introduction: alpha(1)-Adrenoceptors are considered critical for the regulation of prostatic smooth muscle tone. However, previous studies suggested further alpha(1)-adrenoceptor functions besides contraction. Here, we investigated whether alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in the human prostate may activate extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2). Methods: Prostate tissues from patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were stimulated in vitro. Activation of ERK1/2 was assessed by Western blot analysis. Expression of ERK1/2 was studied by immunohistochemistry. The effect of ERK1/2 inhibition by U0126 on phenylephrine-induced contraction was studied in organ-bath experiments. Results: Stimulation of human prostate tissue with noradrenaline (30 mu M) or phenylephrine (10 mu M) resulted in ERK activation. This was reflected by increased levels of phosphorylated ERK1/2. Expression of ERK1/2 in the prostate was observed in smooth muscle cells. Incubation of prostate tissue with U0126 (30 mu M) resulted in ERK1/2 inhibition. Dose-dependent phenylephrine-induced contraction of prostate tissue was not modulated by U0126. Conclusions: alpha(1)-Adrenoceptors in the human prostate are coupled to ERK1/2. This may partially explain previous observations suggesting a role of alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in the regulation of prostate growth. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base
Tests of Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors for Active Target Time Projection Chambers in nuclear physics
Active target detection systems, where the gas used as the detection medium is also a target for nuclear reactions, have been used for a wide variety of nuclear physics applications since the eighties. Improvements in Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs) and in micro-electronics achieved in the last decade permit the development of a new generation of active targets with higher granularity pad planes that allow spatial and time information to be determined with unprecedented accuracy. A novel active target and time projection chamber (ACTAR TPC), that will be used to study reactions and decays of exotic nuclei at facilities such as SPIRAL2, is presently under development and will be based on MPGD technology. Several MPGDs (Micromegas and Thick GEM) coupled to a 2×2 mm2 pixelated pad plane have been tested and their performances have been determined with different gases over a wide range of pressures. Of particular interest for nuclear physics experiments are the angular and energy resolutions. The angular resolution has been determined to be better than 1° FWHM for short traces of about 4 cm in length and the energy resolution deduced from the particle range was found to be better than 5% for 5.5 MeV α particles. These performances have been compared to Geant4 simulations. These experimental results validate the use of these detectors for several applications in nuclear physics
Central factorials under the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform of polynomials
We show that slight modifications of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform lead
to an automorphism of the vector space of polynomials. This circumstance along
with the Mellin transformation property of the modified Bessel functions
perform the passage of monomials to central factorial polynomials. A special
attention is driven to the polynomial sequences whose KL-transform is the
canonical sequence, which will be fully characterized. Finally, new identities
between the central factorials and the Euler polynomials are found.Comment: also available at http://cmup.fc.up.pt/cmup/ since the 2nd August

Zeros of Orthogonal Polynomials Generated by the Geronimus Perturbation of Measures
Proceedings of: 14th International Conference Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2014). Guimarães, Portugal, June 30 – July 3, 2014This paper deals with monic orthogonal polynomial sequences
(MOPS in short) generated by a Geronimus canonical spectral transformation
of a positive Borel measure μ, i.e., (x−c)
−1dμ(x)+Nδ(x−c),
for some free parameter N ∈ IR+ and shift c. We analyze the behavior
of the corresponding MOPS. In particular, we obtain such a behavior
when the mass N tends to infinity as well as we characterize the precise
values of N such the smallest (respectively, the largest) zero of these
MOPS is located outside the support of the original measure μ. When
μ is semi-classical, we obtain the ladder operators and the second order
linear differential equation satisfied by the Geronimus perturbed MOPS,
and we also give an electrostatic interpretation of the zero distribution
in terms of a logarithmic potential interaction under the action of an
external field. We analyze such an equilibrium problem when the mass
point of the perturbation c is located outside the support of μ
Efficacy and safety of alirocumab in insulin-treated patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk:Rationale and design of the ODYSSEY DM-INSULIN trial
Aims: The coadministration of alirocumab, a PCSK9 inhibitor for treatment of hypercholesterolaemia, and insulin in diabetes mellitus (DM) requires further study. Described here is the rationale behind a phase-IIIb study designed to characterize the efficacy and safety of alirocumab in insulin-treated patients with type 1 (T1) or type 2 (T2) DM with hypercholesterolaemia and high cardiovascular (CV) risk. Methods: ODYSSEY DM-INSULIN (NCT02585778) is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre study that planned to enrol around 400 T2 and up to 100 T1 insulin-treated DM patients. Participants had low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels at screening. ≥. 70. mg/dL (1.81. mmol/L) with stable maximum tolerated statin therapy or were statin-intolerant, and taking (or not) other lipid-lowering therapy; they also had established CV disease or at least one additional CV risk factor. Eligible patients were randomized 2:1 to 24. weeks of alirocumab 75. mg every 2. weeks (Q2W) or a placebo. Alirocumab-treated patients with LDL-C. ≥. 70. mg/dL at week 8 underwent a blinded dose increase to 150. mg Q2W at week 12. Primary endpoints were the difference between treatment arms in percentage change of calculated LDL-C from baseline to week 24, and alirocumab safety. Results: This is an ongoing clinical trial, with 76 T1 and 441 T2 DM patients enrolled; results are expected in mid-2017. Conclusion: The ODYSSEY DM-INSULIN study will provide information on the efficacy and safety of alirocumab in insulin-treated individuals with T1 or T2 DM who are at high CV risk and have hypercholesterolaemia not adequately controlled by the maximum tolerated statin therapy
Hand and torso pre-cooling does not enhance subsequent high-intensity cycling or cognitive performance in heat
The purpose of this study was to compare the separate and combined effects of two practical cooling methods (hand and torso) used prior to exercise on subsequent high-intensity cycling performance in heat. Ten trained male cyclists (V̇O2peak: 65.7 ± 10.7 ml.kg−1.min−1) performed four experimental trials (randomised within-subjects design) involving 30-min of pre-cooling (20-min seated; PRE-COOL, 10 min warm-up; PRE-COOL+WUP), while using a: (1) hand-cooling glove (CG); (2) cooling jacket (CJ); (3) both CG and CJ (CG+J); or (4) no-cooling (NC) control, followed by a cycling race simulation protocol (all performed in 35.0 ± 0.6°C and 56.6 ± 4.5% RH). During the 30-min of pre-cooling, no reductions in core (Tc) or mean skin temperature (Tsk) occurred; however, Tsk remained lower in the CJ and CG+J trials compared to NC and CG (p = 0.002–0.040, d= 0.55–1.01). Thermal sensation ratings also indicated that participants felt “hotter” during NC compared to all other trials during both PRE-COOL and PRE-COOL+WUP (p = 0.001–0.015, d= 1.0–2.19), plus the early stages of exercise (sets 1–2; p = 0.005–0.050, d= 0.56–1.22). Following cooling, no differences were found for absolute Tc and Tsk responses between trials over the entire exercise protocol (p > 0.05). Exercise and cognitive (working memory) performance also did not differ between trials (p = 0.843); however, cognitive performance improved over time in all trials (p < 0.001). In summary, pre-cooling (20-min seated and 10-min warm-up) in heat did not improve subsequent high-intensity cycling performance, cognitive responses and associated thermoregulatory strain (Tc and Tsk) compared to control
Pegylated-liposomes increase the efficacy of Idelalisib in lymphoma B-cells
New drugs and technologies are continuously developed to improve the efficacy and minimize the critical side effects of cancer treatments. The present investigation focuses on the development of a liposomal formulation for Idelalisib, a small-molecule kinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of lymphoid malignancies. Idelalisib is a potent and selective antitumor agent, but it is not indicated nor recommended for first-line treatment due to fatal and serious toxicities. Herein, liposomes are proposed as a delivery tool to improve the therapeutic profile of Idelalisib. Specifically, PEGylated liposomes were prepared, and their physicochemical and technological features were investigated. Light-scattering spectroscopy and cryo-transmission electron microscopy revealed nanosized unilamellar vesicles, which were proved to be stable in storage and in simulated biological fluids. The cytotoxicity of the liposome formulation was investigated in a human non-Hodgkin's lymphoma B cell line. Idelalisib was able to induce death of tumor cells if delivered by the nanocarrier system at increased efficacy. These findings suggest that combining Idelalisib and nanotechnologies may be a powerful strategy to increase the antitumor efficacy of the drug
