    Epitaxial strain and the magnetic properties of canted antiferromagnetic perovskite NaNiF3 thin films

    The perovskite crystal structure is known to exhibit a multitude of interesting physical phenomena owing to the intricate coupling of the electronic and magnetic properties to the structure. Fluoroperovskites offer an alternative chemistry to the much more widely studied oxide materials, which may prove advantageous for applications. It is demonstrated here for the first time that the antiferromagnetic perovskite fluoride, NaNiF3, can be synthesized in thin film form. The films were grown via molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3 (100) substrates to produce high quality epitaxial films in the thickness range of 5-50 nm. The Pnma structure of the films was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. There was a decrease in the out-of-plane lattice spacing from the bulk value corresponding to a maximum strain of 1.7% in the thinnest film. Canted antiferromagnetism was measured in all films using magnetometry and a negative change in the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of ΔTN = - 9.1 ± 0.7 K was observed with increasing strain

    Hexagonal Tilings and Locally C6 Graphs

    We give a complete classification of hexagonal tilings and locally C6 graphs, by showing that each of them has a natural embedding in the torus or in the Klein bottle. We also show that locally grid graphs are minors of hexagonal tilings (and by duality of locally C6 graphs) by contraction of a perfect matching and deletion of the resulting parallel edges, in a form suitable for the study of their Tutte uniqueness.Comment: 14 figure

    The Broad Line Radio Galaxy J2114+820

    In the frame of the study of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, we have made radio observations of J2114+820, a low power radio galaxy with an angular size of 6'. Its radio structure basically consists of a prominent core, a jet directed in north-west direction and two extended S-shaped lobes. We have also observed the optical counterpart of J2114+820, a bright elliptical galaxy with a strong unresolved central component. The optical spectrum shows broad emission lines. This fact, together with its low radio power and FR-I type morphology, renders J2114+820 a non-trivial object from the point of view of the current unification schemes of radio loud active galactic nuclei.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     Searching and fixating: scale-invariance vs. characteristic timescales in attentional processes

    In an experiment involving semantic search, the visual movements of sample populations subjected to visual and aural input were tracked in a taskless paradigm. The probability distributions of saccades and fixations were obtained and analyzed. Scale-invariance was observed in the saccadic distributions, while the fixation distributions revealed the presence of a characteristic (attentional) time scale for literate subjects.
