    Induced Gravity II: Grand Unification

    As an illustration of a renormalizable, asymptotically-free model of induced gravity, we consider an SO(10)SO(10) gauge theory interacting with a real scalar multiplet in the adjoint representation. We show that dimensional transmutation can occur, spontaneously breaking SO(10)SO(10) to SU(5)U(1),SU(5){\otimes}U(1), while inducing the Planck mass and a positive cosmological constant, all proportional to the same scale vv. All mass ratios are functions of the values of coupling constants at that scale. Below this scale (at which the Big Bang may occur), the model takes the usual form of Einstein-Hilbert gravity in de Sitter space plus calculable corrections. We show that there exist regions of parameter space in which the breaking results in a local minimum of the effective action, and a {\bf positive} dilaton (mass)2(\hbox{mass})^2 from two-loop corrections associated with the conformal anomaly. Furthermore, unlike the singlet case we considered previously, some minima lie within the basin of attraction of the ultraviolet fixed point. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of the coupling constants also lie within the range of convergence of the Euclidean path integral, so there is hope that there will be candidates for sensible vacua. Although open questions remain concerning unitarity of all such renormalizable models of gravity, it is not obvious that, in curved backgrounds such as those considered here, unitarity is violated.     Zero modes in de Sitter background

    There are five well-known zero modes among the fluctuations of the metric of de~Sitter (dS) spacetime. For Euclidean signature, they can be associated with certain spherical harmonics on the S4S^4 sphere, viz., the vector representation 5\bf5 of the global SO(5)SO(5) isometry. They appear, for example, in the perturbative calculation of the on-shell effective action of dS space, as well as in models containing matter fields. These modes are shown to be associated with collective modes of S4S^4 corresponding to certain coherent fluctuations. When dS space is embedded in flat five dimensions E5,E^5, they may be seen as a legacy of translation of the center of the S4S^4 sphere. Rigid translations of the S4S^4-sphere on E5E^5 leave the classical action invariant but are unobservable displacements from the point of view of gravitational dynamics on S4.S^4. Thus, unlike similar moduli, the center of the sphere is not promoted to a dynamical degree of freedom. As a result, these zero modes do not signify the possibility of physically realizable fluctuations or flat directions for the metric of dS space. They are not associated with Killing vectors on S4S^4 but can be with certain non-isometric, conformal Killing forms that locally correspond to a rescaling of the volume element dV4.dV_4. For convenience, we frame our discussion in the context of renormalizable gravity, but the conclusions apply equally to the corresponding zero modes in Einstein gravity. We expect that these zero modes will be present to all orders in perturbation theory. They will occur for Lorentzian signature as well, so long as the hyperboloid H4H^4 is locally stable, but there remain certain infrared issues that need to be clarified. We conjecture that they will appear in any gravitational theory having dS background as a locally stable solution of the effective action, regardless of whether additional matter is included.Comment: v4, 28pages, no figures; final journal form, minor changes in text and refs from v

    Exclusive J/ψJ/\psi and Υ\Upsilon photoproduction and the low xx gluon

    We study exclusive vector meson photoproduction, γpV+p\gamma p \to V + p with V=J/ψV=J/\psi or Υ\Upsilon, at NLO in collinear factorisation, in order to examine what may be learnt about the gluon distribution at very low xx. We examine the factorisation scale dependence of the predictions. We argue that, using knowledge of the NLO corrections, terms enhanced by a large ln(1/ξ)\ln(1/\xi) can be reabsorbed in the LO part by a choice of the factorisation scale. (In these exclusive processes ξ\xi takes the role of Bjorken-xx.) Then, the scale dependence coming from the remaining NLO contributions has no ln(1/ξ)\ln(1/\xi) enhancements. As a result, we find that predictions for the amplitude of Υ\Upsilon production are stable to within about ±15%\pm 15\%. This will allow data for the exclusive process pppΥpp p \to p\Upsilon p at the LHC, particularly from LHCb, to be included in global parton analyses to constrain the gluon PDF down to x105x\sim 10^{-5}. Moreover, the study of exclusive J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction indicates that the gluon density found in the recent global PDF analyses is too small at low xx and low scales.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures.     Systematically searching for and assessing the literature for self-management of chronic pain: A lay users' perspective

Background: The Engaging with older adults in the development of strategies for the self management of chronic pain (EOPIC) study aims to design and develop self management strategies to enable older adults to manage their own pain. Involving older adults in research into chronic pain management will better enable the identification and development of strategies that are more appropriate for their use, but how can perspectives really be utilised to the best possible outcomes?. Method. Seven older adults were recruited through a local advertising campaign to take part. We also invited participants from the local pain services, individuals who had been involved in earlier phase of the EOPIC study and a previous ESRC funded project. The group undertook library training and research skills training to facilitate searching of the literature and identified sources of material. A grading tool was developed using perceived essential criteria identified by the older adults and material was graded according to the criteria within this scale. Results: Fifty-seven resources from over twenty-eight sources were identified. These materials were identified as being easily accessible, readable and relevant. Many of the web based materials were not always easy to find or readily available so they were excluded by the participants. All but one were UK based. Forty-four items were identified as meeting the key criteria for inclusion in the study. This included five key categories as follows; books, internet, magazines, leaflets, CD's/Tapes. Conclusion: This project was able to identify a number of exemplars of self management material along with some general rules regarding the categories identified. We must point out that the materials identified were not age specific, were often locally developed and would need to be adapted to older adults with chronic pain. For copyright issues we have not included them in this paper. The key message is really related to the format rather than the content. However, the group acknowledge that these may vary according to the requirements of each individual older adult and therefore recommend the development of a leaflet to help others in their search for resources. This leaflet has been developed as part of Phase IV of the EOPIC study

    Optical properties of Southern Hemisphere aerosols: Report of the joint CSIRO/NASA study

    This study was made in support of the LAWS and GLOBE programs, which aim to design a suitable Doppler lidar system for measuring global winds from a satellite. Observations were taken from 5 deg S to 45 deg S along and off the E and SE Australian coast, thus obtaining representative samples over a large latitude range. Observations were made between 0 and 6 km altitude of aerosol physical and chemical properties in situ from the CSIRO F-27 aircraft; of lidar backscatter coefficients at 10.6 micron wavelength from the F-27 aircraft; of lidar backscatter profiles at 0.694 microns at Sale, SE Australia; and of lidar backscatter profiles at 0.532 microns at Cowley Beach, NE Australia. Both calculations and observations in the free troposphere gave a backscatter coefficient of 1-2 x 10 to the -11/m/sr at 10.6 microns, although the accuracies of the instruments were marginal at this level. Equivalent figures were 2-8 x 10 to the -9/m/sr (aerosol) and 9 x 10 to the -9 to 2 x 10 to the -8/m/sr (lidar) at 0.694 microns wavelength at Sale; and 3.7 x 10 to the -9/m/sr (aerosol) and 10 to the -8 to 10 to the -7/m/sr (lidar) at 0.532 microns wavelength at Cowley Beach. The measured backscatter coefficients at 0.694 and 0.532 microns were consistently higher than the values calculated from aerosol size distributions by factors of typically 2 to 10
