Method and Meaning: Selections from the Gettysburg College Collection
What is art historical study and how it should be carried out are fundamental questions the exhibition Method and Meaning: Selections from the Gettysburg College Collection intends to answer. This student-curated exhibition is an exciting academic endeavor of seven students of art history majors and minors in the Art History Methods course. The seven student curators are Shannon Callahan, Ashlie Cantele, Maura D’Amico, Xiyang Duan, Devin Garnick, Allison Gross and Emily Zbehlik. As part of the class assignment, this exhibition allows the students to explore various art history methods on individual case studies. The selection of the works in the exhibition reflects a wide array of student research interests including an example of 18th century Chinese jade chime stone, jade and bronze replicas of ancient Chinese bronze vessels, a piece of early 20th century Chinese porcelain, oil paintings by Pennsylvania Impressionist painter Fern Coppedge, prints by Salvador Dalí and by German artist Käthe Kollwitz, and an early 20th century wood block print by Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. Hepatic heparan sulfate is a master regulator of hepcidin expression and iron homeostasis in human hepatocytes and mice.
Hepcidin is a liver-derived peptide hormone that controls systemic iron homeostasis. Its expression is regulated by the bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6)/SMAD1/5/8 pathway and by the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 6 (IL6). Proteoglycans that function as receptors of these signaling proteins in the liver are commonly decorated by heparan sulfate, but the potential role of hepatic heparan sulfate in hepcidin expression and iron homeostasis is unclear. Here, we show that modulation of hepatic heparan sulfate significantly alters hepcidin expression and iron metabolism both in vitro and in vivo Specifically, enzymatic removal of heparan sulfate from primary human hepatocytes, CRISPR/Cas9 manipulation of heparan sulfate biosynthesis in human hepatoma cells, or pharmacological manipulation of heparan sulfate-protein interactions using sodium chlorate or surfen dramatically reduced baseline and BMP6/SMAD1/5/8-dependent hepcidin expression. Moreover inactivation of the heparan sulfate biosynthetic gene N-deacetylase and N-sulfotransferase 1 (Ndst1) in murine hepatocytes (Ndst1 f/f AlbCre +) reduced hepatic hepcidin expression and caused a redistribution of systemic iron, leading to iron accumulation in the liver and serum of mice. Manipulation of heparan sulfate had a similar effect on IL6-dependent hepcidin expression in vitro and suppressed IL6-mediated iron redistribution induced by lipopolysaccharide in vivo These results provide compelling evidence that hepatocyte heparan sulfate plays a key role in regulating hepcidin expression and iron homeostasis in mice and in human hepatocytes
SNTF immunostaining reveals previously undetected axonal pathology in traumatic brain injury
Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is a common feature of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may also be a predominant pathology in mild TBI or “concussion”. The rapid deformation of white matter at the instant of trauma can lead to mechanical failure and calcium-dependent proteolysis of the axonal cytoskeleton in association with axonal transport interruption. Recently, a proteolytic fragment of alpha-II spectrin, “SNTF”, was detected in serum acutely following mild TBI in patients and was prognostic for poor clinical outcome. However, direct evidence that this fragment is a marker of DAI has yet to be demonstrated in either humans following TBI or in models of mild TBI. Here, we used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to examine for SNTF in brain tissue following both severe and mild TBI. Human severe TBI cases (survival <7d; n = 18) were compared to age-matched controls (n = 16) from the Glasgow TBI archive. We also examined brains from an established model of mild TBI at 6, 48 and 72 h post-injury versus shams. IHC specific for SNTF was compared to that of amyloid precursor protein (APP), the current standard for DAI diagnosis, and other known markers of axonal pathology including non-phosphorylated neurofilament-H (SMI-32), neurofilament-68 (NF-68) and compacted neurofilament-medium (RMO-14) using double and triple immunofluorescent labeling. Supporting its use as a biomarker of DAI, SNTF immunoreactive axons were observed at all time points following both human severe TBI and in the model of mild TBI. Interestingly, SNTF revealed a subpopulation of degenerating axons, undetected by the gold-standard marker of transport interruption, APP. While there was greater axonal co-localization between SNTF and APP after severe TBI in humans, a subset of SNTF positive axons displayed no APP accumulation. Notably, some co-localization was observed between SNTF and the less abundant neurofilament subtype markers. Other SNTF positive axons, however, did not co-localize with any other markers. Similarly, RMO-14 and NF-68 positive axonal pathology existed independent of SNTF and APP. These data demonstrate that multiple pathological axonal phenotypes exist post-TBI and provide insight into a more comprehensive approach to the neuropathological assessment of DAI

The global COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the largest clinical and operational challenges faced by emergency medicine, and our EDs continue to see increased volumes of infected patients, many of whom are not only ill, but acutely aware and fearful of their circumstances and potential mortality. Given this, there may be no more important time to focus on staff-patient communication and expression of compassion.However, many of the techniques usually employed by emergency clinicians to provide comfort to patients and their families are made more challenging or impossible by the current circumstances. Geriatric ED patients, who are at increased risk of severe disease, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of isolation.Despite many challenges, emergency clinicians have at their disposal a myriad of tools that can still be used to express compassion and empathy to their patients. Placing emphasis on using these techniques to maximize humanism in the care of COVID-19 patients during this crisis has the potential to bring improvements to ED patient care well after this pandemic has passed
Control of spin in quantum dots with non-Fermi liquid correlations
Spin effects in the transport properties of a quantum dot with spin-charge
separation are investigated. It is found that the non-linear transport spectra
are dominated by spin dynamics. Strong spin polarization effects are observed
in a magnetic field. They can be controlled by varying gate and bias voltages.
Complete polarization is stable against interactions. When polarization is not
complete, it is power-law enhanced by non-Fermi liquid effects.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
New Pulsars from an Arecibo Drift Scan Search
We report the discovery of pulsars J0030+0451, J0711+0931, and J1313+0931
that were found in a search of 470 square degrees at 430 MHz using the 305m
Arecibo telescope. The search has an estimated sensitivity for long period, low
dispersion measure, low zenith angle, and high Galactic latitude pulsars of ~1
mJy, comparable to previous Arecibo searches. Spin and astrometric parameters
for the three pulsars are presented along with polarimetry at 430 MHz. PSR
J0030+0451, a nearby pulsar with a period of 4.8 ms, belongs to the less common
category of isolated millisecond pulsars. We have measured significant
polarization in PSR J0030+0451 over more than 50% of the period, and use these
data for a detailed discussion of its magnetospheric geometry. Scintillation
observations of PSR J0030+0451 provide an estimate of the plasma turbulence

Covariation Among Vowel Height Effects on Acoustic Measures
Covariation among vowel height effects on vowel intrinsic fundamental frequency (IF0), voice onset time (VOT), and voiceless interval duration (VID) is analyzed to assess the plausibility of a common physiological mechanism underlying variation in these measures. Phrases spoken by 20 young adults, containing words composed of initial voiceless stops or /s/ and high or low vowels, were produced in habitual and voluntarily increased F0 conditions. Luttinger systems is studied for repulsive, finite range interaction between
electrons on the same, V_{11}, and on different,V_{12}, sides of the junction.
Features of the Coulomb blockade effect are observed if V_{12}=0. We predict a
novel interaction induced enhancement of the current if V_{12}>0. When
V_{12}=V_{11}, the current is suppressed at small bias, but the ``charging
