Zoonotic Viruses Associated with Illegally Imported Wildlife Products
The global trade in wildlife has historically contributed to the emergence and spread of infectious diseases. The United States is the world's largest importer of wildlife and wildlife products, yet minimal pathogen surveillance has precluded assessment of the health risks posed by this practice. This report details the findings of a pilot project to establish surveillance methodology for zoonotic agents in confiscated wildlife products. Initial findings from samples collected at several international airports identified parts originating from nonhuman primate (NHP) and rodent species, including baboon, chimpanzee, mangabey, guenon, green monkey, cane rat and rat. Pathogen screening identified retroviruses (simian foamy virus) and/or herpesviruses (cytomegalovirus and lymphocryptovirus) in the NHP samples. These results are the first demonstration that illegal bushmeat importation into the United States could act as a conduit for pathogen spread, and suggest that implementation of disease surveillance of the wildlife trade will help facilitate prevention of disease emergence

Polycystic Kidney and Liver Disease in Two Related West Highland White Terrier Litters
Polycystic kidney and liver disease was present in four of six female and three of five male offspring born in two matings between the same pair of West Highland White Terriers. Clinical signs were apparent and serum biochemistry analysis consistent with liver failure was evident by 5 weeks of age. Affected pups were euthanatized because of their disease. Renal cysts were confirmed to be of collecting duct origin by Dolichos bifluros agglutinin lectin histochemistry, and hepatic cysts were of biliary origin. The clinically unaffected parents were related through multiple common ancestors, and there were no reports of similar disease in related dogs. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance is therefore suggested. This is the first report of polycystic kidney and liver disease in the West Highland White Terrier. The features of the disease in these pups are similar to those of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) in humans. The West Highland White Terrier may therefore be a potential animal model for ARPKD. </jats:p

Summary
Repository corticotrophin injection (RCI, H.P Acthar® gel) has been approved for use in the management of multiple autoimmune and inflammatory diseases for more than a half-century, but its mechanism of action is not well understood. We used RNA-Seq methods to define RCI-regulated mRNAs in cultured human B cells under conditions of activation by interleukin (IL)-4 and CD40 ligand. Following IL-4/CD40L activation and RCI treatment we found up-regulation of 115 unique mRNA transcripts and down-regulation of 80 unique mRNAs. The effect on these RNA levels was dose-dependent for RCI and was distinct from changes in mRNA expression induced by treatment with a potent synthetic glucocorticoid. RCI down-regulated mRNAs were observed to include a significant over-representation of genes critical for B cell proliferation under activating conditions. These data confirm that RCI exerts direct effects on human B cells to modulate mRNA expression in specific pathways of importance to B cell function and that, at the molecular level, the effects of RCI are distinct from those exerted by glucocorticoids.</jats:p
Amphibian chytrid fungus in Africa - realigning hypotheses and the research paradigm
The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), responsible for numerous amphibian declines and extinctions, was previously thought to originate from the African continent. This was based on infected museum specimens from early 20th century South Africa, Cameroon and Uganda. Further research on archived specimens from other continents eventually revealed early 20th century records also in Brazil and Japan. Recent robust analysis of genomic diversity and phylogeny of Bd has shown origin from Asia to be more plausible. This raises the issue that the threat of Bd for African amphibians as a novel pathogen has been underestimated. There are now cases where dramatic amphibian declines in disparate mountains on the continent could be attributed to Bd, and this necessitates an urgent realigning of hypotheses and the research agenda for amphibian conservation on the continent. Notably, hotspots of amphibian host naivety include West Africa where this pathogen has so far not been detected. We discuss research gaps that amphibian conservationists might focus on, notably more genomic sequencing of the BdCAPE (the less virulent) lineage to determine its date of emergence, and assessing the susceptibility of different amphibian species to infection, disease and decline to better prioritize conservation actions
