We derive analytic expressions for infinite products of random 2x2 matrices.
The determinant of the target matrix is log-normally distributed, whereas the
remainder is a surprisingly complicated function of a parameter characterizing
the norm of the matrix and a parameter characterizing its skewness. The
distribution may have importance as an uncommitted prior in statistical image

Language discrimination by human newborns and by cotton-top tamarin monkeys
Humans, but no other animal, make meaningful use of spoken language. What is unclear, however, is whether this capacity depends on a unique constellation of perceptual and neurobiological mechanisms, or whether a subset of such mechanisms are shared with other organisms. To explore this problem, we conducted parallel experiments on human newborns and cotton-top tamarin monkeys to assess their ability to discriminate unfamiliar languages. Using a habituation-dishabituation procedure, we show that human newborns and tamarins can discriminate sentences from Dutch and Japanese, but not if the sentences are played backwards. Moreover, the cues for discrimination are not present in backward speech. This suggests that the human newborns' tuning to certain properties of speech relies on general processes of the primate auditory system
Major flaws in conflict prevention policies towards Africa : the conceptual deficits of international actors’ approaches and how to overcome them
Current thinking on African conflicts suffers from misinterpretations oversimplification, lack of focus, lack of conceptual clarity, state-centrism and lack of vision). The paper analyses a variety of the dominant explanations of major international actors and donors, showing how these frequently do not distinguish with sufficient clarity between the ‘root causes’ of a conflict, its aggravating factors and its triggers. Specifically, a correct assessment of conflict prolonging (or sustaining) factors is of vital importance in Africa’s lingering confrontations. Broader approaches (e.g. “structural stability”) offer a better analytical framework than familiar one-dimensional explanations. Aptamer-based multiplexed proteomic technology for biomarker discovery
Interrogation of the human proteome in a highly multiplexed and efficient manner remains a coveted and challenging goal in biology. We present a new aptamer-based proteomic technology for biomarker discovery capable of simultaneously measuring thousands of proteins from small sample volumes (15 [mu]L of serum or plasma). Our current assay allows us to measure ~800 proteins with very low limits of detection (1 pM average), 7 logs of overall dynamic range, and 5% average coefficient of variation. This technology is enabled by a new generation of aptamers that contain chemically modified nucleotides, which greatly expand the physicochemical diversity of the large randomized nucleic acid libraries from which the aptamers are selected. Proteins in complex matrices such as plasma are measured with a process that transforms a signature of protein concentrations into a corresponding DNA aptamer concentration signature, which is then quantified with a DNA microarray. In essence, our assay takes advantage of the dual nature of aptamers as both folded binding entities with defined shapes and unique sequences recognizable by specific hybridization probes. To demonstrate the utility of our proteomics biomarker discovery technology, we applied it to a clinical study of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We identified two well known CKD biomarkers as well as an additional 58 potential CKD biomarkers. These results demonstrate the potential utility of our technology to discover unique protein signatures characteristic of various disease states. More generally, we describe a versatile and powerful tool that allows large-scale comparison of proteome profiles among discrete populations. This unbiased and highly multiplexed search engine will enable the discovery of novel biomarkers in a manner that is unencumbered by our incomplete knowledge of biology, thereby helping to advance the next generation of evidence-based medicine
The Quantum Modular Group in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity
The role of the modular group in the holonomy representation of
(2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity is studied. This representation can be viewed
as a "Heisenberg picture", and for simple topologies, the transformation to the
ADM "Schr{\"o}dinger picture" may be found. For spacetimes with the spatial
topology of a torus, this transformation and an explicit operator
representation of the mapping class group are constructed. It is shown that the
quantum modular group splits the holonomy representation Hilbert space into
physically equivalent orthogonal ``fundamental regions'' that are interchanged

Toward an Antiphony Framework for Dividing Tasks into Subtasks
Task analysis is a staple of ergonomics, neuroergonomics, human factors, and experimental psychology inquiry, and often benefits from granularity beyond the task level to the subtask level. The concept and challenge of identifying the subcomponents of tasks are neither new, nor solved. Practitioners routinely identify individually internally consistent and yet conflicting subdivisions. The challenge of producing reliable, valid subtask data across efforts recommends a unified framework for identifying consistent subtask divisions within tasks. A framework is here forwarded, based upon universal “antiphony” turn-taking behavior in human-human interaction, but adapted to address the highly scripted vocabulary of human-machine interaction. Practical application to a real-world vehicle interface is demonstrated, an example discussed in the light of research design, applied use, and future improvement
Do we need to fix the anterior fracture component in insufficiency fractures of the pelvis? A biomechanical comparison on an FFP type IIIc fracture in an osteoporotic pelvic bone model.
There is a growing understanding of the specific characteristics of insufficiency fractures of the pelvis and of general requirements for the treatment of affected patients with focus on early mobilization and effective pain reduction as the main goals of therapy. While there is consensus on the significance of achieving stability of the dorsal pelvic ring structures there is still an open discussion about the potential benefits of additional stabilization of an anterior fracture component. Within a biomechanical test setup, two established methods of dorsal fracture fixation were tested under axial loading (25-1200 N; 1000 test cycles) on an explicit osteoporotic bone model (n = 32) with a standardized FFP type IIIc fracture with and without additional fixation of the anterior fracture component. Dorsal fixation was performed with and long and a short 7.3 mm cannulated screw in S1 in one group (n = 16), and a trans sacral bar with an additional short 7.3 mm cannulated screw in S1 in the other group (n = 16). Half of the samples received a 7.3 mm cannulated retrograde transpubic screw for anterior fixation. The fixation with the trans sacral bar and the additional anterior screw fixation showed the highest rate of stability (p = 0.0014), followed by the double SI-screw fixation with stabilization of the anterior fracture (p = 0.0002). During testing, we observed the occurrence of new sacral fractures contralateral to the initial fracture in 22/32 samples. The results let us assume that stabilization of an additional anterior fracture component relevantly improves the stability of the entire ring construct and might prevent failure of the dorsal stabilization or further fracture progression
The effect of dopamine agonists on adaptive and aberrant salience in Parkinson's disease
Clinical evidence suggests that after initiation of dopaminergic medications some patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) develop psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the neurocognitive basis of this phenomenon can be defined as the formation of arbitrary and illusory associations between conditioned stimuli and reward signals, called aberrant salience. Young, never-medicated PD patients and matched controls were assessed on a speeded reaction time task in which the probe stimulus was preceded by conditioned stimuli that could signal monetary reward by color or shape. The patients and controls were re-evaluated after 12 weeks during which the patients received a dopamine agonist (pramipexole or ropinirole). Results indicated that dopamine agonists increased both adaptive and aberrant salience in PD patients, that is, formation of real and illusory associations between conditioned stimuli and reward, respectively. This effect was present when associations were assessed by means of faster responding after conditioned stimuli signaling reward (implicit salience) and overt rating of stimulus-reward links (explicit salience). However, unusual feelings and experiences, which are subclinical manifestations of psychotic-like symptoms, were specifically related to irrelevant and illusory stimulus-reward associations (aberrant salience) in PD patients receiving dopamine agonists. The learning of relevant and real stimulus-reward associations (adaptive salience) was not related to unusual experiences. These results suggest that dopamine agonists may increase psychotic-like experiences in young patients with PD, possibly by facilitating dopaminergic transmission in the ventral striatum, which results in aberrant associations between conditioned stimuli and reward
