The chromatin remodeller ACF acts as a dimeric motor to space nucleosomes.
Evenly spaced nucleosomes directly correlate with condensed chromatin and gene silencing. The ATP-dependent chromatin assembly factor (ACF) forms such structures in vitro and is required for silencing in vivo. ACF generates and maintains nucleosome spacing by constantly moving a nucleosome towards the longer flanking DNA faster than the shorter flanking DNA. How the enzyme rapidly moves back and forth between both sides of a nucleosome to accomplish bidirectional movement is unknown. Here we show that nucleosome movement depends cooperatively on two ACF molecules, indicating that ACF functions as a dimer of ATPases. Further, the nucleotide state determines whether the dimer closely engages one or both sides of the nucleosome. Three-dimensional reconstruction by single-particle electron microscopy of the ATPase-nucleosome complex in an activated ATP state reveals a dimer architecture in which the two ATPases face each other. Our results indicate a model in which the two ATPases work in a coordinated manner, taking turns to engage either side of a nucleosome, thereby allowing processive bidirectional movement. This novel dimeric motor mechanism differs from that of dimeric motors such as kinesin and dimeric helicases that processively translocate unidirectionally and reflects the unique challenges faced by motors that move nucleosomes
The Bridgwater Infant Welfare Centre, 1922-1939: from an authoritarian concern with 'welfare mothers' to a more inclusive community health project?
The infant welfare movement in Britain has received considerable scholarly attention but continues to generate controversy and debate. Many of the services began with nineteenth-century voluntary initiative but were later developed by local authorities. Critics have drawn attention to the limitations of such provision; arguing that it was predicated on unattractive assumptions about class and gender roles. Under this interpretation working-class mothers were viewed with suspicion and targeted for advice aimed at inculcating middle-class standards of childcare and housekeeping. This paper accepts that there was an authoritarian character to much of the early welfare work but suggests that over time this gave way to more inclusive approaches that sought to provide clients with the services that met their real rather than assumed needs. This paper reviews the recent historiography, develops an overview of national trends, and then takes a detailed look at the Bridgwater Infant Welfare Centre. The case study benefi ts from unusually comprehensive records and, by drawing on evidence from a small Somerset town, adds to our understanding of infant welfare work that has previously been developed from research on major urban centres.Wellcome Trust Fellowshi
Generation enraged: The journal Jalta as a mouthpiece for young Jews in Germany
How does the increasing diversification of both the Jewish and general population in Germany influence Jewish self-positioning in German society? It seems that especially young Jews no longer perceive themselves in a binary relationship to the majority society alone, but as part of a heterogeneous, post-migrant society. The journal Jalta – Positionen zur jüdischen Gegenwart [Yalta – Positions on the Jewish Present], published between 2017 and 2020, served as an important mouthpiece for the young generation's rage and desires. This study identifies and expounds upon three sets of relationships within German society that Jalta wishes to redefine: relationships within Jewish communities, relationships between Jews and the majority society, and relationships of Jews to other minorities
Mediatization of Jewish–Muslim dialogue in Germany amid COVID‑19
In the wake of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, religiousorganizations increasingly mediatized their activities. Studies examining this processmostly focused on communal offerings, while ignoring how rapid mediatizationaffected programs geared toward interfaith dialogue. This paper examines the effectsand possibilities of this shift to virtual spaces by focusing on frameworks that promoteJewish–Muslim dialogue in Germany. It traces how Jews and Muslims intervenein popular discourse using social media platforms to self-define their respectivereligions and the relationship between them. In this process, those involved increating virtual spaces focused on the intersectionality between gender biases andChristonormativity. This paper utilizes a broad methodological approach, includingparticipant observation in dialogue events in virtual spaces, discursive analyses ofvideos and podcasts, and qualitative interviews with Jews and Muslims involved inthe creation of virtual spaces. The first section discusses Jewish–Muslim encountersoccurring in organized dialogue events on video communication platforms that areephemeral in nature (no recordings). The subsequent sections analyze German-languageformats that have a representative character and are streamed, recorded, andpresented on social media platforms
Precarious companionship: Discourses of adversity and commonality in Jewish-Muslim dialogue initiatives in Germany.
Muslims and Jews are an integral part of interreligious activism in Germany. They share a stricter notion of monotheism as compared to Christians. Local Jewish-Muslim dialogue takes place in the shadow of the Middle East conflict as well as radical Islamic terror attacks, and both pursue similar interests, i.e. regarding circumcision and halal or kosher butchering. We explore how the multi-layered setting shapes Jewish-Muslim encounters within interreligious initiatives in Germany. We analyse discourses in two spheres of interreligious dialogue. The first is local in-person dialogue initiatives that took place in the years 2011/12 during the circumcision debate. The second is translocal dialogue activities presented in social media that took place in 2020 when dialogue had moved to digital frameworks and social media due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The focal point of our comparative analysis is the discourses of adversity and commonality shaping these conversations and the narratives of difference and unity they produce
A surface code quantum computer in silicon
The exceptionally long quantum coherence times of phosphorus donor nuclear spin qubits in silicon, coupled with the proven scalability of silicon-based nano-electronics, make them attractive candidates for large-scale quantum computing. However, the high threshold of topological quantum error correction can only be captured in a two-dimensional array of qubits operating synchronously and in parallel—posing formidable fabrication and control challenges. We present an architecture that addresses these problems through a novel shared-control paradigm that is particularly suited to the natural uniformity of the phosphorus donor nuclear spin qubit states and electronic confinement. The architecture comprises a two-dimensional lattice of donor qubits sandwiched between two vertically separated control layers forming a mutually perpendicular crisscross gate array. Shared-control lines facilitate loading/unloading of single electrons to specific donors, thereby activating multiple qubits in parallel across the array on which the required operations for surface code quantum error correction are carried out by global spin control. The complexities of independent qubit control, wave function engineering, and ad hoc quantum interconnects are explicitly avoided. With many of the basic elements of fabrication and control based on demonstrated techniques and with simulated quantum operation below the surface code error threshold, the architecture represents a new pathway for large-scale quantum information processing in silicon and potentially in other qubit systems where uniformity can be exploited
To what extent is behaviour a problem in English schools?:Exploring the scale and prevalence of deficits in classroom climate
The working atmosphere in the classroom is an important variable in the process of education in schools, with several studies suggesting that classroom climate is an important influence on pupil attainment. There are wide differences in the extent to which classroom climate is considered to be a problem in English schools. Some ‘official’ reports suggest that behaviour in schools is ‘satisfactory or better’ in the vast majority of schools; other sources have pointed to behaviour being a serious and widespread problem. The paper details four studies conducted over the past decade which aimed to explore these disparities. The aim of the research was to gain a more accurate insight into the extent to which deficits in classroom climate limit educational attainment and equality of educational opportunity in English schools. The findings question the suggestion that behaviour is satisfactory or better in 99.7% of English schools and the concluding section suggests ways in which deficits in classroom climate might be addressed. Although the study is limited to classrooms in England, OECD studies suggest that deficits in the working atmosphere in classrooms occur in many countries. The study therefore has potential relevance for education systems in other countries
Structural Integration in Language and Music: Evidence for a Shared System.
In this study, we investigate whether language and music share cognitive resources for structural processing. We
report an experiment that used sung materials and manipulated linguistic complexity (subject-extracted relative
clauses, object-extracted relative clauses) and musical complexity (in-key critical note, out-of-key critical note,
auditory anomaly on the critical note involving a loudness increase). The auditory-anomaly manipulation was
included in order to test whether the difference between in-key and out-of-key conditions might be due to any salient,
unexpected acoustic event. The critical dependent measure involved comprehension accuracies to questions
about the propositional content of the sentences asked at the end of each trial. The results revealed an interaction
between linguistic and musical complexity such that the difference between the subject- and object-extracted relative
clause conditions was larger in the out-of-key condition than in the in-key and auditory-anomaly conditions.
These results provide evidence for an overlap in structural processing between language and music
