Multi sensor transducer and weight factor
A multi-sensor transducer and processing method allow insitu monitoring of the senor accuracy and transducer `health`. In one embodiment, the transducer has multiple sensors to provide corresponding output signals in response to a stimulus, such as pressure. A processor applies individual weight factors to reach of the output signals and provide a single transducer output that reduces the contribution from inaccurate sensors. The weight factors can be updated and stored. The processor can use the weight factors to provide a `health` of the transducer based upon the number of accurate versus in-accurate sensors in the transducer
Physics Based Model for Cryogenic Chilldown and Loading. Part III: Correlations
In this report we discuss the details of the correlations used to recognize flow patterns and predict frictional losses, heat and mass transfer in the cryogenic two phase flow. The emphasis are put on the formulation of the correlation problem in terms of concise parametric and functional spaces allowing for efficient online search of the model parameters and accurate prediction of the phenomena observed during cryogenic loading. A special attention is paid to the discussion of the correlation dependence on the gravity. In this context the physics of stability, friction, and boiling in the two-phase flow that underlies the required correlations is discussed
Universal analytic properties of noise. Introducing the J-Matrix formalism
We propose a new method in the spectral analysis of noisy time-series data
for damped oscillators. From the Jacobi three terms recursive relation for the
denominators of the Pad\'e Approximations built on the well-known Z-transform
of an infinite time-series, we build an Hilbert space operator, a J-Operator,
where each bound state (inside the unit circle in the complex plane) is simply
associated to one damped oscillator while the continuous spectrum of the
J-Operator, which lies on the unit circle itself, is shown to represent the
noise. Signal and noise are thus clearly separated in the complex plane. For a
finite time series of length 2N, the J-operator is replaced by a finite order
J-Matrix J_N, having N eigenvalues which are time reversal covariant. Different
classes of input noise, such as blank (white and uniform), Gaussian and pink,
are discussed in detail, the J-Matrix formalism allowing us to efficiently
calculate hundreds of poles of the Z-transform. Evidence of a universal
behaviour in the final statistical distribution of the associated poles and
zeros of the Z-transform is shown. In particular the poles and zeros tend, when
the length of the time series goes to infinity, to a uniform angular
distribution on the unit circle. Therefore at finite order, the roots of unity
in the complex plane appear to be noise attractors. We show that the
Z-transform presents the exceptional feature of allowing lossless undersampling
and how to make use of this property. A few basic examples are given to suggest

High Energy Break and Reflection Features in the Seyfert Galaxy MCG+8-11-11
We present the results from ASCA and OSSE simultaneous observations of the
Seyfert 1.5 galaxy MCG+8-11-11 performed in August-September 1995. The ASCA
observations indicate a modest flux increase (20%) in 3 days, possibly
correlated to a softening of the 0.6-9 keV spectrum. The spectrum is well
described by a hard power law (Gamma=1.64) absorbed by a column density
slightly larger than the Galactic value, with an iron line at 6.4 keV of EW=400
eV. The simultaneous OSSE data are characterized by a much softer power law
with photon index Gamma=3.0, strongly suggesting the presence of a spectral
break in the hard X/soft gamma-ray band. A joint fit to OSSE and ASCA data
clearly shows an exponential cut-off at about 300 keV, and strong reflection
component. MCG+8-11-11 features a spectral break in the underlying continuum
unambiguously. This, together with the inferred low compactness of this source,
favours thermal or quasi-thermal electron Comptonization in a structured Corona

AGILE observation of a gamma-ray flare from the blazar 3C 279
Context. We report the detection by the AGILE satellite of an intense
gamma-ray flare from the gamma-ray source 3EG J1255-0549, associated to the
Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar 3C 279, during the AGILE pointings towards the Virgo
Region on 2007 July 9-13.
Aims. The simultaneous optical, X-ray and gamma-ray covering allows us to
study the spectral energy distribution (SED) and the theoretical models
relative to the flaring episode of mid-July.
Methods. AGILE observed the source during its Science Performance
Verification Phase with its two co-aligned imagers: the Gamma- Ray Imaging
Detector (GRID) and the hard X-ray imager (Super-AGILE) sensitive in the 30 MeV
- 50 GeV and 18 - 60 keV respectively. During the AGILE observation the source
was monitored simultaneously in optical band by the REM telescope and in the
X-ray band by the Swift satellite through 4 ToO observations.
Results. During 2007 July 9-13 July 2007, AGILE-GRID detected gamma-ray
emission from 3C 279, with the source at ~2 deg from the center of the Field of
View, with an average flux of (210+-38) 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 for energy above
100 MeV. No emission was detected by Super-AGILE, with a 3-sigma upper limit of
10 mCrab. During the observation lasted about 4 days no significative gamma-ray
flux variation was observed.
Conclusions. The Spectral Energy Distribution is modelled with a homogeneous
one-zone Synchrotron Self Compton emission plus the contributions by external
Compton scattering of direct disk radiation and, to a lesser extent, by
external Compton scattering of photons from the Broad Line Region.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
AGILE detection of delayed gamma-ray emission from GRB 080514B
GRB 080514B is the first gamma ray burst (GRB), since the time of EGRET, for
which individual photons of energy above several tens of MeV have been detected
with a pair-conversion tracker telescope. This burst was discovered with the
Italian AGILE gamma-ray satellite. The GRB was localized with a cooperation by
AGILE and the interplanetary network (IPN). The gamma-ray imager (GRID)
estimate of the position, obtained before the SuperAGILE-IPN localization, is
found to be consistent with the burst position. The hard X-ray emission
observed by SuperAGILE lasted about 7 s, while there is evidence that the
emission above 30 MeV extends for a longer duration (at least ~13 s). Similar
behavior was seen in the past from a few other GRBs observed with EGRET.
However, the latter measurements were affected, during the brightest phases, by
instrumental dead time effects, resulting in only lower limits to the burst
intensity. Thanks to the small dead time of the AGILE/GRID we could assess that
in the case of GRB 080514B the gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio changes
significantly between the prompt and extended emission phase.Comment: A&A letters, in pres
THE COST STRUCTURE OF MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS IN EASTERN EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA
Microfinance institutions are important, particularly in developing countries, because they expand the frontier of financial intermediation by providing loans to those traditionally excluded from formal financial markets. This paper presents the first systematic statistical examination of the performance of MFIs operating in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. A cost function is estimated for MFIs in the region from 1999-2004. First, the presence of subsidies is found to be associated with higher MFI costs. When output is measured as the number of loans made, we find that MFIs become more efficient over time and that MFIs involved in the provision of group loans and loans to women have lower costs. However, when output is measured as volume of loans rather than their number, this last finding is reversed. Comparing the hierarchy of keywords in on-line news portals
The tagging of on-line content with informative keywords is a widespread
phenomenon from scientific article repositories through blogs to on-line news
portals. In most of the cases, the tags on a given item are free words chosen
by the authors independently. Therefore, relations among keywords in a
collection of news items is unknown. However, in most cases the topics and
concepts described by these keywords are forming a latent hierarchy, with the
more general topics and categories at the top, and more specialised ones at the
bottom. Here we apply a recent, cooccurrence-based tag hierarchy extraction
method to sets of keywords obtained from four different on-line news portals.
The resulting hierarchies show substantial differences not just in the topics
rendered as important (being at the top of the hierarchy) or of less interest
(categorised low in the hierarchy), but also in the underlying network
structure. This reveals discrepancies between the plausible keyword association
frameworks in the studied news portals
Emergence of scale-free leadership structure in social recommender systems
The study of the organization of social networks is important for
understanding of opinion formation, rumor spreading, and the emergence of
trends and fashion. This paper reports empirical analysis of networks extracted
from four leading sites with social functionality (Delicious, Flickr, Twitter
and YouTube) and shows that they all display a scale-free leadership structure.
To reproduce this feature, we propose an adaptive network model driven by
social recommending. Artificial agent-based simulations of this model highlight
a "good get richer" mechanism where users with broad interests and good
judgments are likely to become popular leaders for the others. Simulations also
indicate that the studied social recommendation mechanism can gradually improve
the user experience by adapting to tastes of its users. Finally we outline
implications for real online resource-sharing systems
