Cosmological Reionization
In popular cosmological scenarios, some time beyond a redshift of 10, stars
within protogalaxies created the first heavy elements; these systems, together
perhaps with an early population of quasars, generated the ultraviolet
radiation and mechanical energy that reheated and reionized the cosmos. The
history of the Universe during and soon after these crucial formative stages is
recorded in the all-pervading intergalactic medium (IGM), which contains most
of the ordinary baryonic material left over from the big bang. Throughout the
epoch of structure formation, the IGM becomes clumpy and acquires peculiar
motions under the influence of gravity, and acts as a source for the gas that
gets accreted, cools, and forms stars within galaxies, and as a sink for the

Evidence of a higher-order singularity in dense short-ranged attractive colloids
We study a model in which particles interact through a hard-core repulsion
complemented by a short-ranged attractive potential, of the kind found in
colloidal suspensions. Combining theoretical and numerical work we locate the
line of higher-order glass transition singularities and its end-point -- named
-- on the fluid-glass line. Close to the point, we detect
logarithmic decay of density correlations and sub linear power-law increase of
the mean square displacement, for time intervals up to four order of
magnitudes. We establish the presence of the singularity by studying how
the range of the potential affects the time-window where anomalous dynamics is

Ataxia in children: early recognition and clinical evaluation
Background: Ataxia is a sign of different disorders involving any level of the nervous system and consisting of impaired coordination of movement and balance. It is mainly caused by dysfunction of the complex circuitry connecting the basal ganglia, cerebellum and cerebral cortex.
A careful history, physical examination and some characteristic maneuvers are useful for the diagnosis of ataxia. Some of the causes of ataxia point toward a benign course, but some cases of ataxia can be severe and particularly frightening.
Methods: Here, we describe the primary clinical ways of detecting ataxia, a sign not easily recognizable in children. We also report on the main disorders that cause ataxia in children.
Results: The causal events are distinguished and reported according to the course of the disorder: acute, intermittent, chronic-non-progressive and chronic-progressive.
Conclusions: Molecular research in the field of ataxia in children is rapidly expanding; on the contrary no similar results have been attained in the field of the treatment since most of the congenital forms remain fully untreatable. Rapid recognition and clinical evaluation of ataxia in children remains of great relevance for therapeutic results and prognostic counseling
Equilibrium cluster phases and low-density arrested disordered states: The role of short-range attraction and long-range repulsion
We study a model in which particles interact with short-ranged attractive and
long-ranged repulsive interactions, in an attempt to model the equilibrium
cluster phase recently discovered in sterically stabilized colloidal systems in
the presence of depletion interactions. At low packing fraction particles form
stable equilibrium clusters which act as building blocks of a cluster fluid. We
study the possibility that cluster fluids generate a low-density disordered
arrested phase, a gel, via a glass transition driven by the repulsive
interaction. In this model the gel formation is formally described with the

Compton Echoes from Gamma-ray Bursts
Recent observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have provided growing evidence
for collimated outflows and emission, and strengthened the connection between
GRBs and supernovae. If massive stars are the progenitors of GRBs, the hard
photon pulse will propagate in the pre-burst, dense environment. Circumstellar
material will Compton scatter the prompt GRB radiation and give rise to a
reflection echo. We calculate luminosities, spectra, and light curves of such
Compton echoes in a variety of emission geometries and ambient gas
distributions, and show that the delayed hard X-ray flash from a pulse
propagating into a red supergiant wind could be detectable by Swift out to
z~0.2. Independently of the gamma-ray spectrum of the prompt burst, reflection
echoes will typically show a high-energy cutoff between m_ec^2/2 and m_ec^2
because of Compton downscattering. At fixed burst energy per steradian, the
luminosity of the reflected echo is proportional to the beaming solid angle,
Omega_b, of the prompt pulse, while the number of bright echoes detectable in
the sky above a fixed limiting flux increases as Omega_b^{1/2}, i.e. it is
smaller in the case of more collimated jets. The lack of an X-ray echo at one
month delay from the explosion poses severe constraints on the possible
existence of a lateral GRB jet in SN 1987A. The late r-band afterglow observed
in GRB990123 is fainter than the optical echo expected in a dense red
supergiant environment from a isotropic prompt optical flash. Significant MeV
delayed emission may be produced through the bulk Compton (or Compton drag)
effect resulting from the interaction of the decelerating fireball with the

A spherical model with directional interactions: I. Static properties
We introduce a simple spherical model whose structural properties are similar
to the ones generated by models with directional interactions, by employing a
binary mixture of large and small hard spheres, with a square-well attraction
acting only between particles of different size. The small particles provide
the bonds between the large ones. With a proper choice of the interaction
parameters, as well as of the relative concentration of the two species, it is
possible to control the effective valence. Here we focus on a specific choice
of the parameters which favors tetrahedral ordering and study the equilibrium
static properties of the system in a large window of densities and
temperatures. Upon lowering the temperature we observe a progressive increase
in local order, accompanied by the formation of a four-coordinated network of
bonds. Three different density regions are observed: at low density the system
phase separates into a gas and a liquid phase; at intermediate densities a
network of fully bonded particles develops; at high densities -- due to the
competition between excluded volume and attractive interactions -- the system
forms a defective network. The very same behavior has been previously observed
in numerical studies of non-spherical models for molecular liquids, such as
water, and in models of patchy colloidal particles. Differently from these
models, theoretical treatments devised for spherical potentials, e.g. integral
equations and ideal mode coupling theory for the glass transition can be
applied in the present case, opening the way for a deeper understanding of the
thermodynamic and dynamic behavior of low valence molecules and particles.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
Cerebral venous hemodynamic abnormalities in episodic and chronic migraine
Alterations of cerebral venous drainage have been demonstrated in chronic migraine (CM), suggesting that cerebral venous hemodynamic abnormalities (CVHAs) play a role in this condition. The aim of the present study was to look for a correlation between CM and CVHAs. We recruited 33 subjects suffering from CM with or without analgesic overuse, 29 episodic migraine (EM) patients with or without aura, and 21 healthy subjects as controls (HCs). CVHAs were evaluated by transcranial and extracranial echo-color Doppler evaluation of five venous hemodynamic parameters. CVHAs were significantly more frequent in the CM and EM patients than in the HCs. In the migraine patients, CVHAs were not correlated with clinical features. Cerebral venous hemodynamic abnormalities in episodic and chronic migraine The significantly greater frequency of CVHAs observed in the migraineurs may reflect a possible relationship between migraine and these abnormalities. Prospective longitudinal studies are needed to investigate whether CVHAs have a role in the processes of migraine chronification
Gravitational Lensing Statistics in Universes Dominated by Dark Energy
We study lens statistics in flat, low-density universes with different
equations of state for the dark energy component. Dark energy
modifies the distance-redshift relation and the mass function of dark matter
halos leading to changes in the lensing optical depth as a function of image
separation. Those effects must, however, be distinguished from effects
associated with the structure of dark matter halos. Baryonic cooling causes
galaxy-mass halos to have different central density profiles than group- and
cluster-mass halos, which causes the distribution of normal arcsecond-scale
lenses to differ from the distribution of ``wide-separation'' (\Delta\theta
\gtrsim 4\arcsec) lenses. Fortunately, the various parameters related to
cosmology and halo structure have very different effects on the overall image
separation distribution: (1) the abundance of wide-separation lenses is
exremely sensitive (by orders of magnitude) to the distribution of
``concentration'' parameters for massive halos modeled with the
Navarro-Frenk-White profile; (2) the transition between normal and
wide-separation lenses depends mainly on the mass scale where baryonic cooling
ceases to be efficient; and (3) dark energy has effects at all image separation
scales. While current lens samples cannot usefully constrain all of the
parameters, ongoing and future imaging surveys should discover hundreds or
thousands of lenses and make it possible to disentangle the various effects and

Implant survival and success rates in patients with risk factors: results from a long-term retrospective study with a 10 to 18 years follow-up
OBJECTIVE:
Risk factors for implant therapy are represented by all general and local conditions that through various mechanisms can increase either short-term and long-term failure risk. The aim of this study is to assess the implant survival and implant success rates with single and multiple risk factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
To address the research purpose, a retrospective cohort study was designed and implemented, including a sample of 225 patients with a total of 871 implants placed. The following risk factors were considered: smoking, bruxism, bone augmentation procedures and the presence of load risk (implants with crown/implant relation > 0.8; angulation > 25°; presence of cantilever). Follow-up ranged from 10 years to 18 years (average follow-up 13.6 years). Failures were subdivided into short-term failures, before the prosthetic phase, and long-term failures, after definitive prosthesis. The success criteria published by Albrektsson and Zarb were adopted. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to calculate hazard ratio, with a statistically significant p-value <0.05.
RESULTS:
Out of the 871 implants placed, 138 did not meet the success criteria, (success rate 84.16%), sixty (43.47%) were classified as "early failure" and seventy-eight as "late failure" (56.53%). A total of 70 dental implants were removed, with a survival rate of 91.96%.
CONCLUSIONS:
The presence of a single risk factor does not imply a marked increase of failure risk. Among the analyzed factors, the one that proved to be the most dangerous was bruxism, even when presented as the only risk factor. Bruxism with load risk proved to be the most dangerous association (success rate 69.23%) and could be included among the absolute contraindications for implant treatment
