Professionalism, personal taste and social inclusion : does it matter what clients wear?
An earlier opinion piece considered the professional issues surrounding the occupational therapists dress code within the work place (Davys et al 2006). This second paper considers the role of the occupational therapist when a clients choice of clothing may conflict with social expectations and negatively impact upon social inclusion. Three hypothetical cases that reflect clinical realities are presented, which serve as prompts for reflection upon informed choice, professional responsibilities and the therapeutic relationship. This paper concludes that there needs to be debate about the conflict between each of these areas and the concept of social inclusion
Mobility of Edge Dislocations in the Basal‐Slip System of Zinc
This paper presents the results of measurements of the velocities of 〈1210〉 (0001) edge dislocations in zinc as a function of applied shear stress. All tests were conducted at room temperature on 99.999% pure zinc monocrystals. Dislocations were revealed by means of the Berg‐Barrett x‐ray technique. Stress pulses of microsecond duration were applied to the test specimens by means of a torsion testing machine. Applied resolved shear stresses ranged from 0 to 17.2×10^6 dyn∕cm^2 and measured dislocation velocities ranged from 40–700 cm∕sec. The results of this study indicate that the velocity of edge dislocations in the basal slip system of zinc is linearly proportional to the applied resolved shear stress. These results are analyzed in terms of the phonon drag theory. Agreement between this theory and the results reported here is quite good
Disagreement between correlations of quantum mechanics and stochastic electrodynamics in the damped parametric oscillator
Intracavity and external third order correlations in the damped nondegenerate
parametric oscillator are calculated for quantum mechanics and stochastic
electrodynamics (SED), a semiclassical theory. The two theories yield greatly
different results, with the correlations of quantum mechanics being cubic in
the system's nonlinear coupling constant and those of SED being linear in the
same constant. In particular, differences between the two theories are present
in at least a mesoscopic regime. They also exist when realistic damping is
included. Such differences illustrate distinctions between quantum mechanics
and a hidden variable theory for continuous variables.Comment: accepted by PR
Problem-based learning within occupational therapy education
The Directorate of Occupational Therapy at Salford University adopted a modified Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach within the newly validated programme in March 2004 to ensure that students have training that deems them fit for practice in today’s health service and meets the demands of current academic, professional and societal contexts (Directorate of Occupational Therapy 2004). The use of such an approach was advocated by the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education in (1997) and the Department of Health 2000 in the Meeting the Challenge document. These reports called for a self-directed and flexible learning approach as opposed to more traditional teacher-led sessions. As some directorates of Occupational Therapy consider the introduction of a PBL approach within their curriculum, others are turning away. The authors of this opinion paper have two years experience in delivering a PBL curriculum and have developed an awareness of both the advantages and pitfalls of this style of educational delivery
Analytical prediction of the interior noise for cylindrical models of aircraft fuselages for prescribed exterior noise fields. Phase 2: Models for sidewall trim, stiffened structures and cabin acoustics with floor partition
An airplane interior noise prediction model is developed to determine the important parameters associated with sound transmission into the interiors of airplanes, and to identify apropriate noise control methods. Models for stiffened structures, and cabin acoustics with floor partition are developed. Validation studies are undertaken using three test articles: a ring stringer stiffened cylinder, an unstiffened cylinder with floor partition, and ring stringer stiffened cylinder with floor partition and sidewall trim. The noise reductions of the three test articles are computed using the heoretical models and compared to measured values. A statistical analysis of the comparison data indicates that there is no bias in the predictions although a substantial random error exists so that a discrepancy of more than five or six dB can be expected for about one out of three predictions
Agricultural Precautionary Wealth
Using panel data, the relationship between income uncertainty and the stock of wealth through precautionary saving is examined. Evidence from Kansas data is consistent with the precautionary saving motive in that farm households facing greater uncertainty in income maintain larger stocks of wealth in order to smooth consumption.
