    High-performance triazole-containing brush polymers via azide-alkyne click chemistry: a new functional polymer platform for electrical memory devices

    Two series of well-defined brush polymers bearing a triazole moiety on each bristle were prepared from the click chemistry reactions of a poly(glycidyl azide) (PG) and a poly(4-azidomethylstyrene) (PS) with alkyne derivatives. The thin-film morphologies and properties, especially electrical memory performances, of these triazole-containing brush polymers were investigated in detail. The brush polymers with a triazole ring substituted with an alkyl or alkylenylphenyl group in the bristle exhibited only dielectric characteristics. By contrast, the other brush polymers bearing a triazole ring substituted with phenyl or its derivatives with a longer pi-conjugation length in the bristle demonstrated excellent unipolar permanent memory behaviors with low power consumption, high ON/OFF current ratios and high stability and reliability under ambient air conditions. Furthermore, their memory type could be tuned to p- or n-type by the incorporation of an electron-donating or -accepting group into the phenyl unit linked to the triazole moiety. Overall, this study presents the first demonstration of the azide-alkyne click chemistry synthesis of triazole moieties with substituent(s) that exhibit a resonance effect; this approach is a very powerful synthetic route to develop electrical memory polymers suitable for the low-cost mass production of high-performance, polarity-free programmable memory devices.111711Ysciescopu

    Power-law distributions from additive preferential redistributions

    We introduce a non-growth model that generates the power-law distribution with the Zipf exponent. There are N elements, each of which is characterized by a quantity, and at each time step these quantities are redistributed through binary random interactions with a simple additive preferential rule, while the sum of quantities is conserved. The situation described by this model is similar to those of closed NN-particle systems when conservative two-body collisions are only allowed. We obtain stationary distributions of these quantities both analytically and numerically while varying parameters of the model, and find that the model exhibits the scaling behavior for some parameter ranges. Unlike well-known growth models, this alternative mechanism generates the power-law distribution when the growth is not expected and the dynamics of the system is based on interactions between elements.     We evaluate the virial coefficients B_k for k<=10 for hard spheres in dimensions D=2,...,8. Virial coefficients with k even are found to be negative when D>=5. This provides strong evidence that the leading singularity for the virial series lies away from the positive real axis when D>=5. Further analysis provides evidence that negative virial coefficients will be seen for some k>10 for D=4, and there is a distinct possibility that negative virial coefficients will also eventually occur for D=3.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figure

    Monte Carlo results for the hydrogen Hugoniot

    We propose a theoretical Hugoniot obtained by combining results for the equation of state (EOS) from the Direct Path Integral Monte Carlo technique (DPIMC) and those from Reaction Ensemble Monte Carlo (REMC) simulations. The main idea of such proposal is based on the fact that DPMIC provides first-principle results for a wide range of densities and temperatures including the region of partially ionized plasmas. On the other hand, for lower temperatures where the formation of molecules becomes dominant, DPIMC simulations become cumbersome and inefficient. For this region it is possible to use accurate REMC simulations where bound states (molecules) are treated on the Born-Oppenheimer level using a binding potential calculated by Kolos and Wolniewicz. The remaining interaction is then reduced to the scattering between neutral particles which is reliably treated classically applying effective potentials. The resulting Hugoniot is located between the experimental values of Knudson {\textit{et al.}} \cite{1} and Collins {\textit{et al.}} \cite{2}.Comment: 10 pges, 2 figures, 2 table

    We study classical and quantum dynamics of a particle in a circular billiard with a straight cut. This system can be integrable, nonintegrable with soft chaos, or nonintegrable with hard chaos, as we vary the size of the cut.     The axial ratio of hcp iron at the conditions of the Earth's inner core

    We present ab initio calculations of the high-temperature axial c/a ratio of hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) iron at Earth's core pressures, in order to help interpret the observed seismic anisotropy of the inner core. The calculations are based on density functional theory, which is known to predict the properties of high-pressure iron with good accuracy. The temperature dependence of c/a is determined by minimising the Helmholtz free energy at fixed volume and temperature, with thermal contributions due to lattice vibrations calculated using harmonic theory. Anharmonic corrections to the harmonic predictions are estimated from calculations of the thermal average stress obtained from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of hcp iron at the conditions of the inner core. We find a very gradual increase of axial ratio with temperature. This increase is much smaller than found in earlier calculations, but is in reasonable agreement with recent high-pressure, high-temperature diffraction measurements. This result casts doubt on an earlier interpretation of the seismic anisotropy of the inner core

    Mobilizing Sustainable Bioenergy Supply Chains

    Analysis of the five globally significant supply chains conducted by IEA Bioenergy inter-Task teams – boreal and temperate forests, agricultural crop residues, biogas, lignocellulosic crops, and cultivated grasslands and pastures in Brazil – has confirmed that feedstocks produced using logistically efficient production systems can be mobilized to make significant contributions to achieving global targets for bioenergy. However, the very significant challenges identified in this report indicate that changes by all key members of society in public and private institutions and along the whole length of supply chains from feedstock production to energy product consumption are required to mobilize adequate feedstock resources to make a sustainable and significant contribution to climate change mitigation and provide the social and economic services possible. Notably, this report reveals that all globally significant bioenergy development has been underpinned by political backing, which is necessary for passing legislation in the form of mandates, renewable energy portfolios, carbon trading schemes, and the like. The mobilization potential identified in this report will depend on even greater policy support than achieved to date internationally.JRC.F.8-Sustainable Transpor
