Phase I-II Trial of Foscarnet for Prevention of Cytomegalovirus Infection in Autologous and Allogeneic Marrow Transplant Recipients
The safety and efficacy of foscarnet for prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was evaluated in 19 CMV-seropositive bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients. All patients received intermittent intravenous (iv) foscarnet: 40 mg/kg every 8 h from 7 days before to day 30 after BMT, then 60 mg/kg once a day until day 75. The main toxicity was transient renal dysfunction, with a >50 µmol/L increase in serum creatinine above baseline in 5 of the 7 autograft recipients and in 6 of the 12 allograft recipients. Only 4 allograft recipients developed CMV infection during foscarnet prophylaxis, and no patient showed evidenceofCMV disease. Because 3 allograft recipients receiving concomitant iv amphotericin B showed rapid impairment of renal function, foscarnet prophylaxis should not be given to allograft recipients requiring amphotericin B; otherwise, foscarnet prophylaxis at this dose appears safe after BM
The effect of culture preservation techniques on patulin and citrinin production by Penicillium expansum Link
Aims: To study the influence of culture preservation methods and culture conditions on the
production of the mycotoxins patulin and citrinin by Penicillium expansum.
Methods and results: Ten strains of Penicillium expansum were preserved using subculture
and maintenance at 4 ºC, mineral oil, drying on silica gel and freeze-drying. Patulin and
citrinin production was assessed on yeast extract sucrose agar (YES) and grape juice agar (GJ),
using TLC before and after 0.5, 2–3, 6 and 12 months preservation. Citrinin was detected in all
cultures for all preservation techniques on YES. The patulin profiles obtained differed with
strain and culture media used.
Conclusions: Citrinin production seems to be a stable character for the tested strains. There is
a tendency for patulin detection with time apparently more consistent for silica gel storage and
freeze-drying, especially when the strains are grown on GJ.
Significance and Impact of the Study: Variability in the profiles of the mycotoxins tested
seems to be more strain-specific than dependent on the preservation technique used
New constraints on WIMPs from the Canfranc IGEX dark matter search
The IGEX Collaboration enriched 76Ge double-beta decay detectors are
currently operating in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory with an overburden
of 2450 m.w.e. A recent upgrade has made it possible to use them in a search
for WIMPs. A new exclusion plot has been derived for WIMP-nucleon
spin-independent interaction. To obtain this result, 30 days of data from one
IGEX detector, which has an energy threshold of ~4 keV, have been considered.
These data improve the exclusion limits derived from other germanium diode
experiments in the ~50 GeV DAMA region, and show that with a moderate
improvement of the background below 10 keV, the DAMA region may be tested with
an additional 1 kg-year of exposure.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physics Letter
WIMPs search by scintillators: possible strategy for annual modulation search with large-mass highly-radiopure NaI(Tl)
The DAMA experiments are running deep underground in the Gran Sasso National
Laboratory. Several interesting results have been achieved so far. Here a
maximum likelihood method to search for the WIMP annual modulation signature is
discussed and applied to a set of preliminary test data collected with large
mass highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors. Various related technical arguments

Charge conservation and time-varying speed of light
It has been recently claimed that cosmologies with time dependent speed of
light might solve some of the problems of the standard cosmological scenario,
as well as inflationary scenarios. In this letter we show that most of these
models, when analyzed in a consistent way, lead to large violations of charge
conservation. Thus, they are severly constrained by experiment, including those
where is a power of the scale factor and those whose source term is the
trace of the energy-momentum tensor. In addition, early Universe scenarios with
a sudden change of related to baryogenesis are discarded.Comment: 4 page
Search for an annual modulation of dark-matter signals with a germanium spectrometer at the Sierra Grande Laboratory
Data collected during three years with a germanium spectrometer at the Sierra
Grande underground laboratory have been analyzed for distinctive features of
annual modulation of the signal induced by WIMP dark matter candidates. The
main motivation for this analysis was the recent suggestion by the DAMA/NaI
Collaboration that a yearly modulation signal could not be rejected at the 90%
confidence level when analyzing data obtained with a high-mass low-background
scintillator detector. We performed two different analyses of the data: First,
the statistical distribution of modulation-significance variables (expected
from an experiment running under the conditions of Sierra Grande) was compared
with the same variables obtained from the data. Second, the data were analyzed
in energy bins as an independent check of the first result and to allow for the
possibility of a crossover in the expected signal. In both cases no
statistically significant deviation from the null result was found, which could
support the hypothesis that the data contain a modulated component. A plot is
also presented to enable the comparison of these results to those of the DAMA
collaboration.Comment: New version accepted by Astroparticle Physics. Changes suggested by

First Results of the EDELWEISS WIMP Search using a 320 g Heat-and-Ionization Ge Detector
The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a direct search for WIMP dark
matter using a 320 g heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge detector operated in a
low-background environment in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. No nuclear
recoils are observed in the fiducial volume in the 30-200 keV energy range
during an effective exposure of 4.53 kg.days. Limits for the cross-section for
the spin-independent interaction of WIMPs and nucleons are set in the framework
of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The central value of the
signal reported by the experiment DAMA is excluded at 90% CL.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
New limits on dark--matter WIMPs from the Heidelberg--Moscow experiment
New results after 0.69 kg yr of measurement with an enriched 76Ge detector of
the Heidelberg--Moscow experiment with an active mass of 2.758 kg are
presented. An energy threshold of 9 keV and a background level of 0.042
counts/(kg d keV) in the energy region between 15 keV and 40 keV was
reached.The derived limits on the WIMP--nucleon cross section are the most
stringent limits on spin--independent interactions obtained to date by using
