    Quaternionic Artin representations of Q

Isomorphism classes of dihedral Artin representations of ℚ can be counted asymptotically using Siegel's asymptotic averages of class numbers of binary quadratic forms. Here we consider the analogous problem for quaternionic representations. While an asymptotic formula is out of our reach in this case, we show that the asymptotic behaviour in the two cases is quite different

Thermodynamical analogues in quantum information theory

    Get PDF
The first step in quantum information theory is the identification of entanglement as a valuable resource. The next step is learning how to exploit this resource efficiently. We learn how to exploit entanglement efficiently by applying analogues of thermodynamical concepts. These concepts include reversibility, entropy, and the distinction between intensive and extensive quantities. We discuss some of these analogues and show how they lead to a measure of entanglement for pure states. We also ask whether these analogues are more than analogues, and note that, l o c a l l y, entropy of entanglement is thermodynamical entropy

    Rutherford scattering with radiation damping

We study the effect of radiation damping on the classical scattering of charged particles. Using a perturbation method based on the Runge-Lenz vector, we calculate radiative corrections to the Rutherford cross section, and the corresponding energy and angular momentum losses.Comment: Latex, 11 pages, 4 eps figure

    Helical Symmetry in Linear Systems

We investigate properties of solutions of the scalar wave equation and Maxwell's equations on Minkowski space with helical symmetry. Existence of local and global solutions with this symmetry is demonstrated with and without sources. The asymptotic properties of the solutions are analyzed. We show that the Newman--Penrose retarded and advanced scalars exhibit specific symmetries and generalized peeling properties.Comment: 11 page

    Sequential weak measurement

The notion of weak measurement provides a formalism for extracting information from a quantum system in the limit of vanishing disturbance to its state. Here we extend this formalism to the measurement of sequences of observables. When these observables do not commute, we may obtain information about joint properties of a quantum system that would be forbidden in the usual strong measurement scenario. As an application, we provide a physically compelling characterisation of the notion of counterfactual quantum computation
