A supersonic three-dimensional code for flow over blunt bodies: Program documentation and test cases
The use of a computer code for the calculation of steady, supersonic, three dimensional, inviscid flow over blunt bodies is illustrated. Input and output are given and explained for two cases: a pointed code of 20 deg half angle at 15 deg angle of attack in a free stream with M sub infinite = 7, and a cone-ogive-cylinder at 10 deg angle of attack with M sub infinite = 2.86. Cancer and systemic inflammation: treat the tumour and treat the host
Determinants of cancer progression and survival are multifactorial and host responses are increasingly appreciated to have a major role. Indeed, the development and maintenance of a systemic inflammatory response has been consistently observed to confer poorer outcome, in both early and advanced stage disease. For patients, cancer-associated symptoms are of particular importance resulting in a marked impact on day-to-day quality of life and are also associated with poorer outcome. These symptoms are now recognised to cluster with one another with anorexia, weight loss and physical function forming a recognised cluster whereas fatigue, pain and depression forming another. Importantly, it has become apparent that these symptom clusters are associated with presence of a systemic inflammatory response in the patient with cancer. Given the understanding of the above, there is now a need to intervene to moderate systemic inflammatory responses, where present. In this context the rationale for therapeutic intervention using nonselective anti-inflammatory agents is clear and compelling and likely to become a part of routine clinical practice in the near future. The published literature on therapeutic intervention using anti-inflammatory agents for cancer-associated symptoms was reviewed. There are important parallels with the development of useful treatments for the systemic inflammatory response in patients with rheumatological disease and cardiovascular disease
A Survey of Satisfiability Modulo Theory
Satisfiability modulo theory (SMT) consists in testing the satisfiability of
first-order formulas over linear integer or real arithmetic, or other theories.
In this survey, we explain the combination of propositional satisfiability and
decision procedures for conjunctions known as DPLL(T), and the alternative
"natural domain" approaches. We also cover quantifiers, Craig interpolants,
polynomial arithmetic, and how SMT solvers are used in automated software

Finite-Size Scaling of the Domain Wall Entropy Distributions for the 2D Ising Spin Glass
The statistics of domain walls for ground states of the 2D Ising spin glass
with +1 and -1 bonds are studied for square lattices with , and = 0.5, where is the fraction of negative bonds, using periodic
and/or antiperiodic boundary conditions. When is even, almost all domain
walls have energy = 0 or 4. When is odd, most domain walls have
= 2. The probability distribution of the entropy, , is found
to depend strongly on . When , the probability distribution
of is approximately exponential. The variance of this distribution
is proportional to , in agreement with the results of Saul and Kardar. For
the distribution of is not symmetric about zero. In
these cases the variance still appears to be linear in , but the average of
grows faster than . This suggests a one-parameter scaling

Systemic inflammation predicts all-cause mortality: a Glasgow Inflammation Outcome Study
Introduction:
Markers of the systemic inflammatory response, including C-reactive protein and albumin (combined to form the modified Glasgow Prognostic Score), as well as neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts have been shown to be prognostic of survival in patients with cancer. The aim of the present study was to examine the prognostic relationship between these markers of the systemic inflammatory response and all-cause, cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular mortality in a large incidentally sampled cohort.<p></p>
Methods:
Patients (n = 160 481) who had an incidental blood sample taken between 2000 and 2008 were studied for the prognostic value of C-reactive protein (>10mg/l, albumin (>35mg/l), neutrophil (>7.5×109/l) lymphocyte and platelet counts. Also, patients (n = 52 091) sampled following the introduction of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (>3mg/l) measurements were studied. A combination of these markers, to make cumulative inflammation-based scores, were investigated.<p></p>
Results:
In all patients (n = 160 481) C-reactive protein (>10mg/l) (HR 2.71, p<0.001), albumin (>35mg/l) (HR 3.68, p<0.001) and neutrophil counts (HR 2.18, p<0.001) were independently predictive of all-cause mortality. These associations were also observed in cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular mortality before and after the introduction of high sensitivity C-reactive protein measurements (>3mg/l) (n = 52 091). A combination of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (>3mg/l), albumin and neutrophil count predicted all-cause (HR 7.37, p<0.001, AUC 0.723), cancer (HR 9.32, p<0.001, AUC 0.731), cardiovascular (HR 4.03, p<0.001, AUC 0.650) and cerebrovascular (HR 3.10, p<0.001, AUC 0.623) mortality.
Conclusion
The results of the present study showed that an inflammation-based prognostic score, combining high sensitivity C-reactive protein, albumin and neutrophil count is prognostic of all-cause mortality
Does the advent of modern implant systems and the refinement of free flap technique negate the effect of radiotherapy in oral cancer dental implant based oral rehabilitation
Aim: The aim of this study was to see whether the advent of modern implant systems, and the refinement of free flap techniques, negate the effect of radiotherapy in patients with oral cancer who undergo dental implant–based oral rehabilitation.
Materials and method: A retrospective study was performed to look at the success rates of implants placed in all patients, in a 3 year period at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Survival rates in irradiated patients were compared with success rates in patients who did receive radiotherapy.
Results and conclusions: The rate of failure is comparable in the no radiotherapy group (1.12%) and post-radiotherapy group (1.76%). Our study shows that there was no significant difference in survival when implants were placed in native, grafted bone or in free flap reconstructions in irradiated head and neck cancer patients. Ultimately, the current evidence is not strong enough to prove whether the advent of modern implants systems, and the refinement of free flap techniques,
does negate the effect of radiotherapy in patients with oral cancer undergoing dental implant–based oral rehabilitation. There is a need to perform a prospective clinical trial to observe clinical outcomes in both patients who have received radiotherapy and those who have not received radiotherap
Energetics and geometry of excitations in random systems
Methods for studying droplets in models with quenched disorder are critically
examined. Low energy excitations in two dimensional models are investigated by
finding minimal energy interior excitations and by computing the effect of bulk
perturbations. The numerical data support the assumptions of compact droplets
and a single exponent for droplet energy scaling. Analytic calculations show
how strong corrections to power laws can result when samples and droplets are
averaged over. Such corrections can explain apparent discrepancies in several
