    Modelling and performance analysis of four and eight element TCAS

    This semi-annual report describes the work performed during the period September 1989 through March 1990. The first section presents a description of the effect of the engines of the Boeing 737-200 on the performance of a bottom mounted eight-element traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS). The second section deals exclusively with a four element TCAS antenna. The model obtained to simulate the four element TCAS and new algorithms developed for studying its performance are described. The effect of location on its performance when mounted on top of a Boeing 737-200 operating at 1060 MHz is discussed. It was found that the four element TCAS generally does not perform as well as the eight element TCAS III

    Privacy and Truthful Equilibrium Selection for Aggregative Games

    We study a very general class of games --- multi-dimensional aggregative games --- which in particular generalize both anonymous games and weighted congestion games. For any such game that is also large, we solve the equilibrium selection problem in a strong sense. In particular, we give an efficient weak mediator: a mechanism which has only the power to listen to reported types and provide non-binding suggested actions, such that (a) it is an asymptotic Nash equilibrium for every player to truthfully report their type to the mediator, and then follow its suggested action; and (b) that when players do so, they end up coordinating on a particular asymptotic pure strategy Nash equilibrium of the induced complete information game. In fact, truthful reporting is an ex-post Nash equilibrium of the mediated game, so our solution applies even in settings of incomplete information, and even when player types are arbitrary or worst-case (i.e. not drawn from a common prior). We achieve this by giving an efficient differentially private algorithm for computing a Nash equilibrium in such games. The rates of convergence to equilibrium in all of our results are inverse polynomial in the number of players nn. We also apply our main results to a multi-dimensional market game. Our results can be viewed as giving, for a rich class of games, a more robust version of the Revelation Principle, in that we work with weaker informational assumptions (no common prior), yet provide a stronger solution concept (ex-post Nash versus Bayes Nash equilibrium). In comparison to previous work, our main conceptual contribution is showing that weak mediators are a game theoretic object that exist in a wide variety of games -- previously, they were only known to exist in traffic routing games

    Defect tolerance in as-deposited selenium-alloyed cadmium telluride solar cells

    The efficiency of cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar cells is limited primarily by voltage, which is known to depend on the carrier concentration and carrier lifetimes within the absorber layer of the cell. Here, cathodoluminescence measurements are made on an as-deposited CdSeTe/CdTe solar cell that show that selenium alloyed CdTe material luminesces much more strongly than non-alloyed CdTe. This reduction in non-radiative recombination in the CdSeTe suggests that the selenium gives it a certain defect tolerance. This has implications for carrier lifetimes and voltages in cadmium telluride solar cells

    Helicopter gearbox bearing fault detection using separation techniques and envelope analysis

    The main gearbox (MGB) is a crucial part of a helicopter. MGB bearings suffer intensively from stress and friction during flights hence concerns for their health condition and detecting potential defects become critical for the sake of operation safety and system reliability. In this study, bearing defects were seeded in the second epicyclic stage bearing of a commercial Class A helicopter MGB. Vibration and tachometer signals were recorded simultaneously for the purpose of fault diagnosis. The tests were carried out at different power and speed conditions for various seeded bearing defects. This paper presents a comparison of signal processing techniques employed to identify the presence of the defects masked by strong background noise generated from an operation helicopter MGB

    Ferromagnetism in Fe-substituted spinel semiconductor ZnGa2_2O4_4

    Motivated by the recent experimental observation of long range ferromagnetic order at a relatively high temperature of 200K in the Fe-doped ZnGa2_2O4_4 semiconducting spinel, we propose a possible mechanism for the observed ferromagnetism in this system. We show, supported by band structure calculations, how a model similar to the double exchange model can be written down for this system and calculate the ground state phase diagram for the two cases where Fe is doped either at the tetrahedral position or at the octahedral position. We find that in both cases such a model can account for a stable ferromagnetic phase in a wide range of parameter space. We also argue that in the limit of high Fe2+^{2+} concentration at the tetrahedral positions a description in terms of a two band model is essential. The two ege_g orbitals and the hopping between them play a crucial role in stabilizing the ferromagnetic phase in this limit.     Optimised Traffic Flow at a Single Intersection: Traffic Responsive signalisation

    We propose a stochastic model for the intersection of two urban streets. The vehicular traffic at the intersection is controlled by a set of traffic lights which can be operated subject to fix-time as well as traffic adaptive schemes. Vehicular dynamics is simulated within the framework of the probabilistic cellular automata and the delay experienced by the traffic at each individual street is evaluated for specified time intervals. Minimising the total delay of both streets gives rise to the optimum signalisation of traffic lights. We propose some traffic responsive signalisation algorithms which are based on the concept of cut-off queue length and cut-off density.Comment: 10 pages, 11 eps figs, to appear in J. Phys.

    Dilute ferrimagnetic semiconductors in Fe-substituted spinel ZnGa2_2O4_4

    Solid solutions of nominal composition [ZnGa2_2O4_4]1x_{1-x}[Fe3_3O4_4]x_x, of the semiconducting spinel ZnGa2_2O4_4 with the ferrimagnetic spinel Fe3_3O4_4 have been prepared with xx = 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15. All samples show evidence for long-range magnetic ordering with ferromagnetic hysteresis at low temperatures. Magnetization as a function of field for the xx = 0.15 sample is S-shaped at temperatures as high as 200 K. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy on the xx = 0.15 sample confirms the presence of Fe3+^{3+}, and spontaneous magnetization at 4.2 K. The magnetic behavior is obtained without greatly affecting the semiconducting properties of the host; diffuse reflectance optical spectroscopy indicates that Fe substitution up to xx = 0.15 does not affect the position of the band edge absorption. These promising results motivate the possibility of dilute ferrimagnetic semiconductors which do not require carrier mediation of the magnetic moment.Comment: 9 pages and 6 figure
