Conductance of a single molecule anchored by an isocyanide substituent to gold electrodes
The effect of anchoring group on the electrical conductance of a single
molecule bridging two Au electrodes was studied using di-substituted
(isocyanide (CN-), thiol (S-) or cyanide (NC-)) benzene. The conductance of a
single Au/1,4-diisocyanobenzene/Au junction anchored by isocyanide via a C atom
(junction with the Au-CN bond) was (). The
value was comparable to of a single
Au/1,4-benzenedithiol/Au junction with the Au-S bond. The
Au/1,4-dicyanobenzene/Au molecular junction with the Au-NC bond did not show
well-defined conductance values. The metal-molecule bond strength was estimated
by the distance over which the molecular junction was stretched before
breakdown. The stretched length of the molecular junction with the Au-CN bond
was comparable to that of the Au junction, indicating that the Au-CN bond was

Evaluation of a Liquid Amine System for Spacecraft Carbon Dioxide Control
The analytical and experimental studies are described which were directed toward the acquisition of basic information on utilizing a liquid amine sorbent for in use in a CO2 removal system for manned spacecraft. Liquid amine systems are successfully used on submarines for control of CO2 generated by the crew, but liquid amines were not previously considered for spacecraft applications due to lack of development of satisfactory rotary phase separators. Developments in this area now make consideration of liquid amines practical for spacecraft system CO2 removal. The following major tasks were performed to evaluate liquid amine systems for spacecraft: (1) characterization, through testing, of the basic physical and thermodynamic properties of the amine solution; (2) determination of the dynamic characteristics of a cocurrent flow absorber; and (3) evaluation, synthesis, and selection of a liquid amine system concept oriented toward low power requirements. HSRL-2 aerosol optical measurements and microphysical retrievals vs. airborne in situ measurements during DISCOVER-AQ 2013: : an intercomparison study

Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union.We present a detailed evaluation of remotely-sensed aerosol microphysical properties obtained from an advanced, multi-wavelength High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL-2) during the 2013 NASA DISCOVER-AQ field campaign. Vertically resolved retrievals of fine mode aerosol number, surface area, and volume concentration as well as aerosol effective radius are compared to 108 co-located, airborne in situ measurement profiles in the wintertime San Joaquin Valley, California, and in summertime Houston, Texas. An algorithm for relating the dry in situ aerosol properties to those obtained by the HSRL at ambient relative humidity is discussed. We show that the HSRL-2 retrievals of ambient fine mode aerosol surface area and volume concentrations agree with the in situ measurements to within 25% and 10%, respectively, once hygroscopic growth adjustments have been applied to the dry in situ data. Despite this excellent agreement for the microphysical properties, extinction and backscatter coefficients at ambient relative humidity derived from the in situ aerosol measurements using Mie theory are consistently smaller than those measured by the HSRL, with average differences of 31% 5% and 53% 11% for California and Texas, respectively. This low bias in the in situ estimates is attributed to the presence of coarse mode aerosol that are detected by HSRL-2 but that are too large to be well sampled by the in situ instrumentation. Since the retrieval of aerosol volume is most relevant to current regulatory efforts targeting fine particle mass (PM2:5), these findings highlight the advantages of an advanced 3+2 HSRL for constraining the vertical distribution of the aerosol volume or mass loading relevant for air quality.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Bosonic t-J Model in a stacked triangular lattice and its phase diagram
In this paper, we study phase diagram of a system of two-component hard-core
bosons with nearest-neighbor (NN) pseudo-spin antiferromagnetic (AF)
interactions in a stacked triangular lattice. Hamiltonian of the system
contains three parameters one of which is the hopping amplitude between NN
sites, and the other two are the NN pseudo-spin exchange interaction and
the one that measures anisotropy of pseudo-spin interactions. We investigate
the system by means of the Monte-Carlo simulations and clarify the
low-temperature phase diagram. In particular, we are interested in how the
competing orders, i.e., AF order and superfluidity, are realized, and also
whether supersolid forms as a result of hole doping into the state of the

Oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) affects hyaluronan synthesis in human aortic smooth muscle cells
Thickening of the vessel in response to high low density lipoprotein(s) (LDL) levels is a hallmark of atherosclerosis, characterized by increased hyaluronan (HA) deposition in the neointima. Human native LDL trapped within the arterial wall undergoes modifications such as oxidation (oxLDL). The aim of our study is to elucidate the link between internalization of oxLDL and HA production in vitro, using human aortic smooth muscle cells. LDL were used at an effective protein concentration of 20-50 \u3bcg/ml, which allowed 80% cell viability. HA content in the medium of untreated cells was 28.9 \ub1 3.7 nmol HA-disaccharide/cell and increased after oxLDL treatment to 53.9 \ub1 5.6. OxLDL treatments doubled the transcripts of HA synthase HAS2 and HAS3. Accumulated HA stimulated migration of aortic smooth muscle cells and monocyte adhesiveness to extracellular matrix. The effects induced by oxLDL were inhibited by blocking LOX-1 scavenger receptor with a specific antibody (10 \u3bcg/ml). The cholesterol moiety of LDL has an important role in HA accumulation because cholesterol-free oxLDL failed to induce HA synthesis. Nevertheless, cholesterol-free oxLDL and unmodified cholesterol (20 \u3bcg/ml) induce only HAS3 transcription, whereas 22,oxysterol affects both HAS2 and HAS3. Moreover, HA deposition was associated with higher expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress markers (CHOP and GRP78). Our data suggest that HA synthesis can be induced in response to specific oxidized sterol-related species delivered through oxLDL
Beam-Breakup Instability Theory for Energy Recovery Linacs
Here we will derive the general theory of the beam-breakup instability in
recirculating linear accelerators, in which the bunches do not have to be at
the same RF phase during each recirculation turn. This is important for the
description of energy recovery linacs (ERLs) where bunches are recirculated at
a decelerating phase of the RF wave and for other recirculator arrangements
where different RF phases are of an advantage. Furthermore it can be used for
the analysis of phase errors of recirculated bunches. It is shown how the
threshold current for a given linac can be computed and a remarkable agreement
with tracking data is demonstrated. The general formulas are then analyzed for
several analytically solvable cases, which show: (a) Why different higher order
modes (HOM) in one cavity do not couple so that the most dangerous modes can be
considered individually. (b) How different HOM frequencies have to be in order
to consider them separately. (c) That no optics can cause the HOMs of two
cavities to cancel. (d) How an optics can avoid the addition of the
instabilities of two cavities. (e) How a HOM in a multiple-turn recirculator
interferes with itself. Furthermore, a simple method to compute the orbit
deviations produced by cavity misalignments has also been introduced. It is
shown that the BBU instability always occurs before the orbit excursion becomes

Attitudes of Japanese Ski Tour Operators Toward Western U.S. Ski Resorts
The study was designed to provide important information about the Japanese ski market to U.S. ski resort marketers. One hundred-forty tour operating professionals responded to the survey. The perceived promotional activity level of Japanese tour operating companies toward U.S. ski destinations was found to be neither active nor inactive. The level of knowledge Japanese tour operating professionals have of U.S. ski resorts was found to be limited. There was a significant relationship between how they perceived their companies\u27 promotion activity level toward U.S. ski tour packages and how well the same professionals knew these ski destinations. There was also a significant relationship between how knowledgeable Japanese tour operating professionals were about U.S. ski resorts and how favorably they would promote the same resorts. The implication was made that knowing the attitude of Japanese ski tour operators toward promoting U.S. ski tour packages and familiarizing them to U.S. ski resorts would be the initial step for U.S. ski resorts to position themselves in this market place. The image Japanese tour operating professionals have of U.S. ski resorts and perceived promotional factors affecting their promotional activity level were also examined
Identification of a Simple Sequence Repeat molecular-marker set for large-scale analyses of pear germplasm
Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) are molecular markers suitable to assess the genetic variation of germplasm resources; however, large-scale SSR use requires protocol optimization. The present work aimed to identify SSR markers, developed for pear and other fruit species that are effective in characterizing pear germplasm collections and in demonstrating their use in providing support for genetic breeding programs. From a total of 62 SSR markers investigated, 23 yielding reproducible and polymorphic patterns were used to genotype a sample of 42 pear accessions of the Brazilian Pear Germplasm Bank (PGB). When compared to these 23 SSR markers, a subset of eleven markers, selected based on He, PIC and PId, was used to distinguish individual accessions and perform cluster analysis with similar efficacy. Genetic diversity analysis clustered the European, Japanese and Chinese accessions in distinct groups. This markers subset constitutes a valuable tool for several applications related to pear genetic resources management and breeding
Transient activation of dopaminergic neurons during development modulates visual responsiveness, locomotion and brain activity in a dopamine ontogeny model of schizophrenia
It has been observed that certain developmental environmental risk factors for schizophrenia when modeled in rodents alter the trajectory of dopaminergic development, leading to persistent behavioural changes in adults. This has recently been articulated as the "dopamine ontogeny hypothesis of schizophrenia". To test one aspect of this hypothesis, namely that transient dopaminergic effects during development modulate attention-like behavior and arousal in adults, we turned to a small-brain model, Drosophila melanogaster. By applying genetic tools allowing transient activation or silencing of dopaminergic neurons in the fly brain, we investigated whether a critical window exists during development when altered dopamine (DA) activity levels could lead to impairments in arousal states in adult animals. We found that increased activity in dopaminergic neurons in later stages of development significantly increased visual responsiveness and locomotion, especially in adult males. This misallocation of visual salience and hyperactivity mimicked the effect of acute methamphetamine feeding to adult flies, suggesting up-regulated DA signaling could result from developmental manipulations. Finally, brain recordings revealed significantly reduced gamma-band activity in adult animals exposed to the transient developmental insult. Together, these data support the idea that transient alterations in DA signaling during development can permanently alter behavior in adults, and that a reductionist model such as Drosophila can be used to investigate potential mechanisms underlying complex cognitive disorders such as schizophrenia
A Consensus Definitive Classification of Scavenger Receptors and Their Roles in Health and Disease
Scavenger receptors constitute a large family of proteins that are structurally diverse and participate in a wide range of biological functions. These receptors are expressed predominantly by myeloid cells and recognize a diverse variety of ligands including endogenous and modified host-derived molecules and microbial pathogens. There are currently eight classes of scavenger receptors, many of which have multiple names, leading to inconsistencies and confusion in the literature. To address this problem, a workshop was organized by theUnited StatesNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, to help develop a clear definition of scavenger receptors and a standardized nomenclature based on that definition. Fifteen experts in the scavenger receptor field attended the workshop and, after extensive discussion, reached a consensus regarding the definition of scavenger receptors and a proposed scavenger receptor nomenclature. Scavenger receptors were defined as cell surface receptors that typically bind multiple ligands and promote the removal of nonself or altered-self targets. They often function by mechanisms that include endocytosis, phagocytosis, adhesion, and signaling that ultimately lead to the elimination of degraded or harmful substances. Based on this definition, nomenclature and classification of these receptors into 10 classes were proposed. This classification was discussed at three national meetings and input from participants at these meetings was requested. The following manuscript is a consensus statement that combines the recommendations of the initial workshop and incorporates the input received from the participants at the three national meetings
