Mixing and merging for spoken document retrieval
This paper describes a number of experiments that explo-
red the issues surrounding the retrieval of spoken documents. Two such
issues were examined. First, attempting to find the best use of speech
recogniser output to produce the highest retrieval effectiveness. Second,
investigating the potential problems of retrieving from a so-called "mi-
xed collection", i.e. one that contains documents from both a speech
recognition system (producing many errors) and from hand transcription (producing presumably near perfect documents). The result of the
first part of the work found that merging the transcripts of multiple
recognisers showed most promise. The investigation in the second part
showed how the term weighting scheme used in a retrieval system was
important in determining whether the system was affected detrimentally
when retrieving from a mixed collection
Learning from Richer Human Guidance: Augmenting Comparison-Based Learning with Feature Queries
We focus on learning the desired objective function for a robot. Although
trajectory demonstrations can be very informative of the desired objective,
they can also be difficult for users to provide. Answers to comparison queries,
asking which of two trajectories is preferable, are much easier for users, and
have emerged as an effective alternative. Unfortunately, comparisons are far
less informative. We propose that there is much richer information that users
can easily provide and that robots ought to leverage. We focus on augmenting
comparisons with feature queries, and introduce a unified formalism for
treating all answers as observations about the true desired reward. We derive
an active query selection algorithm, and test these queries in simulation and
on real users. We find that richer, feature-augmented queries can extract more
information faster, leading to robots that better match user preferences in

Source of the Bursty Bulk Flow Diffuse Aurora: Electrostatic Cyclotron Harmonic and Whistler Waves in the Coupling of Bursty Bulk Flows to Auroral Precipitation
Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) and whistler chorus waves are recognized as the two mechanisms responsible for the resonant waveparticle interactions necessary to precipitate plasma sheet electrons into the ionosphere, producing the diffuse Aurora. Previous work has demonstrated ECH waves dominate electron scattering at L shells >8, while whistler chorus dominates scattering at L shells L 1, consistent with electron betatron acceleration. Here, however, we nd whistler chorus emissions throughout an interval of fast ows where Te,/Te,||< 1. Parallel electron beams account for the enhanced parallel electron temperature and serve as the instability mechanism for the whistler chorus. The parallel electron beams and associated cigarshaped distributions are consistent with Fermi acceleration at dipolarizations in fast ows. We demonstrate that the scattering efciency of the whistler chorus exceeds that of ECH waves, which THEMIS also detects during the fast ows. The obliquity of the whistler waves permits efcient scattering of lowerenergy electrons into the diffuse aurora. We conclude that Fermi acceleration of electrons provides one important freeenergy source for the waveparticle interactions responsible for coupling plasma sheet electrons into the diffuse aurora during substorm conditions
Is BMI alone a sufficient outcome to evaluate interventions for child obesity?
BACKGROUND: BMI is often used to evaluate the effectiveness of childhood obesity interventions, but such interventions may have additional benefits independent of effects on adiposity. We investigated whether benefits to health outcomes following the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It! (MEND) childhood obesity intervention were independent of or associated with changes in zBMI.
METHODS: A total of 79 obese children were measured at baseline; 71 and 42 participants were followed-up at 6 and 12 months respectively, and split into four groups depending on magnitude of change in zBMI. Differences between groups for waist circumference, cardiovascular fitness, physical and sedentary activities, and self-esteem were investigated.
RESULTS: Apart from waist circumference and its z-score, there were no differences or trends across zBMI subgroups for any outcome. Independent of the degree of zBMI change, benefits in several parameters were observed in children participating in this obesity intervention.
CONCLUSION: We concluded that isolating a single parameter like zBMI change and neglecting other important outcomes is restrictive and may undermine the evaluation of childhood obesity intervention effectiveness
Role of microenvironment in the mixed Langmuir-Blodgett films
This paper reports the pi-A isotherms and spectroscopic characteristics of
mixed Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of non-amphiphilic carbazole
(CA) molecules mixed with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and stearic acid (SA).
pi-A isotherm studies of mixed monolayer and as well as also the collapse
pressure study of isotherms definitely conclude that CA is incorporated into
PMMA and SA matrices. However CA is stacked in the PMMA/SA chains and forms
microcrystalline aggregates as is evidenced from the scanning electron
micrograph picture. Nature of these aggregated species in the mixed LB films
has been revealed by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies.
The presence of two different kinds of band systems in the fluorescence spectra
of the mixed LB films have been observed. This may be due to the formation of
low dimensional aggregates in the mixed LB films. Intensity distribution of
different band system is highly sensitive to the microenvironment of two

Non-Compositional Term Dependence for Information Retrieval
Modelling term dependence in IR aims to identify co-occurring terms that are
too heavily dependent on each other to be treated as a bag of words, and to
adapt the indexing and ranking accordingly. Dependent terms are predominantly
identified using lexical frequency statistics, assuming that (a) if terms
co-occur often enough in some corpus, they are semantically dependent; (b) the
more often they co-occur, the more semantically dependent they are. This
assumption is not always correct: the frequency of co-occurring terms can be
separate from the strength of their semantic dependence. E.g. "red tape" might
be overall less frequent than "tape measure" in some corpus, but this does not
mean that "red"+"tape" are less dependent than "tape"+"measure". This is
especially the case for non-compositional phrases, i.e. phrases whose meaning
cannot be composed from the individual meanings of their terms (such as the
phrase "red tape" meaning bureaucracy). Motivated by this lack of distinction
between the frequency and strength of term dependence in IR, we present a
principled approach for handling term dependence in queries, using both lexical
frequency and semantic evidence. We focus on non-compositional phrases,
extending a recent unsupervised model for their detection [21] to IR. Our
approach, integrated into ranking using Markov Random Fields [31], yields
effectiveness gains over competitive TREC baselines, showing that there is
still room for improvement in the very well-studied area of term dependence in
IR
Effect of rice husk biochar, carpet waste, farm yard manure and plant growth promoting rhizobium on the growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa)
The present investigation was aimed for improving growth and yield of crop using waste products of differ-ent activities and also useful in ecological stability of soil environment. This objective is not only an economic option for poor farmer but also an effective strategy for increasing yield. The experiment was conducted in the organic farm-ing plot of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU, Varanasi during kharif season of rice crop in 2014. The field experiment was laid out in randomized block design (RBD) with 10 treatments and three replications. Application of graded level of biochar, carpet waste farm yard manure (FYM) and plant growth promoting rhizobium (PGPR) was found to significantly enhance the grain and straw yield of rice by 57.70% and 56.08% over control, respectively
