Technical evaluation of the mEducator 3.0 linked data-based environment for sharing medical educational resources
mEducator 3.0 is a content sharing approach for medical education, based on Linked Data principles. Through standardization, it enables sharing and discovery of medical information. Overall the mEducator project seeks to address the following two different approaches, mEducator 2.0, based on web 2.0 and ad-hoc Application Programmers Interfaces (APIs), and mEducator 3.0, which builds upon a collection of Semantic Web Services that federate existing sources of medical and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) data. The semantic mEducator 3.0 approach It has a number of different instantiations, allowing flexibility and choice. At present these comprise of a standalone social web-based instantiation (MetaMorphosis+) and instantiations integrated with Drupal, Moodle and OpenLabyrinth systems. This paper presents the evaluation results of the mEducator 3.0 Linked Data based environment for sharing medical educational resources and focuses on metadata enrichment, conformance to the requirements and technical performance (of the MetaMorphosis+ and Drupal instantiations)
Size Matters: Microservices Research and Applications
In this chapter we offer an overview of microservices providing the
introductory information that a reader should know before continuing reading
this book. We introduce the idea of microservices and we discuss some of the
current research challenges and real-life software applications where the
microservice paradigm play a key role. We have identified a set of areas where
both researcher and developer can propose new ideas and technical solutions.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1706.0735
Microservices Anti Patterns: A Taxonomy
Several companies are re-architecting their monolithic information systems
with microservices. However, many companies migrated without experience on
microservices, mainly learning how to migrate from books or from practitioners'
blogs. Because of the novelty of the topic, practitioners and consultancy are
learning by doing how to migrate, thus facing several issues but also several
benefits. In this chapter, we introduce a catalog and a taxonomy of the most
common microservices anti-patterns in order to identify common problems. Our
anti-pattern catalogue is based on the experience summarized by different
practitioners we interviewed in the last three years. We identified a taxonomy
of 20 anti-patterns, including organizational (team oriented and
technology/tool oriented) anti-patterns and technical (internal and
communication) anti-patterns. The results can be useful to practitioners to
avoid experiencing the same difficult situations in the systems they develop.
Moreover, researchers can benefit of this catalog and further validate the
harmfulness of the anti-patterns identified.Comment: Microservices - Science and Engineering Springer 201
Silicon strip detectors for two-dimensional soft X-ray imaging at normal incidence
A simple prototype system for static two-dimensional soft X-ray imaging using silicon microstrip detectors irradiated at normal incidence is presented. Radiation sensors consist of single-sided silicon detectors made from 300 mum thick wafers, read by RX64 ASICs. Data acquisition and control is performed by a Windows PC workstation running dedicated LabVIEW routines, connected to the sensors through a PCI-DIO-96 interface. Two-dimensional images are obtained by scanning a lead collimator with a thin slit perpendicular to the strip axis, along the whole detector size; the several strip profiles (slices) taken at each position are then put together to form a planar image. Preliminary results are presented, illustrating the high-resolution imaging capabilities of the system with soft X-rays. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Provision of tailored health information for patient empowerment: An initial study
Search of “right” health information by patients/citizens is an important step towards their empowerment. The number of health information seekers on the Internet is steadily increasing over the years so it is crucial to understand their information needs and the challenges they face during the search process. However, generic search engines do not make any distinction among the users and overload them with the amount of information. Moreover, specific search engines/sites mostly work on medical literature and are built by hand. This paper analyses the possibility of providing the user with tailored web information by exploiting the web semantic capabilities and, in particular, those of schema.org and its health-lifesci extension. After presenting a short review of the main user requirements when searching for health information on the Internet, an analysis of schema.org and its health-lifesci extension is shown to understand the main properties and semantic capabilities in the health/medical domain. Finally, an initial mapping among user requirements and schema.org elements is presented in order to provide expert and non-expert user categories with web pages that satisfy their specific requirements
Ethics and social responsibility in practice: interpreters and translators engaging with and beyond the professions
Interpreting and translation are unregulated activities in most countries, yet interpreters and translators perform challenging work in sensitive domains, such as the law, medicine and social work. Other professionals working in these sectors must complete formal ethics training to qualify, then subscribe to Codes of Practice or Ethics. When they face ethical challenges in their work, they can access ongoing support. They must undertake regular refresher training in ethics. Interpreters and translators rarely have access to this sort of ethical infrastructure. This places the onus on interpreters and translators to reflect on ethical aspects of their practice, for reasons related to both professional performance and social responsibility. This contribution presents original UK-based research with one type of professional ‘clients’ who rely on interpreters and translators, social workers and social work students prior to their first work experience placement. Findings suggest that insufficient attention has been paid to such professional clients and that ethical aspects of professional communication can be compromised as a result. By framing ethics training and ongoing support in terms of social responsibility, we point to some ways in which the different professional groups might communicate and work more effectively with one another and with service users
Tilt-fractional order proportional integral derivative control for DC motor using particle swarm optimization
Introduction. Recently, the most desired goal in DC motor control is to achieve a good robustness and tracking dynamic of the set-point reference speed of the feedback control system. Problem. The used model should be as general as possible and consistently represent systems heterogeneous (which may contain electrical, mechanical, thermal, magnetic and so on). Goal. In this paper, the robust tilt-fractional order proportional integral derivative control is proposed. The objective is to optimize the controller parameters from solving the criterion integral time absolute error by particle swarm optimization. The control strategy is applied on DC motor to validate the efficiency of the proposed idea. Methods. The proposed control technique is applied on DC motor where its dynamic behavior is modeled by external disturbances and measurement noises. Novelty. The proposed control strategy, the synthesized robust tilt-fractional order proportional integral derivative speed controller is applied on the DC motor. Their performance and robustness are compared to those provided by a proportional integral derivative and fractional order proportional integral derivative controllers. Results. This comparison reveals superiority of the proposed robust tilt-fractional order proportional integral derivative speed controller over the remaining controllers in terms of robustness and tracking dynamic of the set-point reference speed with reduced control energy.
