Disorder-sensitive superconductivity in the iron silicide LuFeSi studied by the Lu-site substitutions
We studied effect of non-magnetic and magnetic impurities on
superconductivity in LuFeSi by small amount substitution of the Lu
site, which investigated structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of
non-magnetic (LuSc)FeSi,
(LuY)FeSi, and magnetic
(LuDy)FeSi. The rapid depression of by
non-magnetic impurities in accordance with the increase of residual resistivity
reveals the strong pair breaking dominated by disorder. We provide compelling
evidence for the sign reversal of the superconducting order parameter in

Anomalous Metal-Insulator Transition in Filled Skutterudite CeOsSb
Anomalous metal-insulator transition observed in filled skutterudite
CeOsSb is investigated by constructing the effective tight-binding
model with the Coulomb repulsion between f electrons. By using the mean field
approximation, magnetic susceptibilities are calculated and the phase diagram
is obtained. When the band structure has a semimetallic character with small
electron and hole pockets at and H points, a spin density wave
transition with the ordering vector occurs due to the
nesting property of the Fermi surfaces. Magnetic field enhances this phase in

The Relative Orientation of Nuclear Accretion and Galaxy Stellar Disks in Seyfert Galaxies
We use the difference (delta) between the position angles of the nuclear
radio emission and the host galaxy major axis to investigate the distribution
of the angle (beta) between the axes of the nuclear accretion disk and the host
galaxy disk in Seyfert galaxies. We provide a critical appraisal of the quality
of all measurements, and find that the data are limited by observational
uncertainties and biases, such as the well known deficiency of Seyfert galaxies
of high inclination. There is weak evidence that the distribution of delta for
Seyfert 2 galaxies may be different (at the 90% confidence level) from a
uniform distribution, while the Seyfert 1 delta distribution is not
significantly different from a uniform distribution or from the Seyfert 2 delta
distribution. The cause of the possible non-uniformity in the distribution of
delta for Seyfert 2 galaxies is discussed. Seyfert nuclei in late-type spiral
galaxies may favor large values of delta (at the ~96% confidence level), while
those in early-type galaxies show a more or less random distribution of delta.
This may imply that the nuclear accretion disk in non-interacting late-type
spirals tends to align with the stellar disk, while that in early-type galaxies
is more randomly oriented, perhaps as a result of accretion following a galaxy
merger.
We point out that biases in the distribution of inclination translate to
biased estimates of beta in the context of the unified scheme. When this effect
is taken into account, the distributions of beta for all Seyferts together, and
of Seyfert 1's and 2's separately, agree with the hypothesis that the radio
jets are randomly oriented with respect to the galaxy disk. The data are
consistent with the expectations of the unified scheme, but do not demand it.Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal, Vol 516 #1, May 1, 1999.

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al
Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al (I =5/2+, T_1/2 = 644(25) ms)
has been measured by means of the beta-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized
31Al beam produced in the projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q
moment, |Q_exp(31Al)| = 112(32)emb, are in agreement with conventional shell
model calculations within the sd valence space. Previous result on the magnetic
moment also supports the validity of the sd model in this isotope, and thus it
is concluded that 31Al is located outside of the island of inversion.Comment: 5 page
Engineering of Cyclodextrin Product Specificity and pH Optima of the Thermostable Cyclodextrin Glycosyltransferase from Thermoanaerobacterium thermosulfurigenes EM1
The product specificity and pH optimum of the thermostable cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) from Thermoanaerobacterium thermosulfurigenes EM1 was engineered using a combination of x-ray crystallography and site-directed mutagenesis. Previously, a crystal soaking experiment with the Bacillus circulans strain 251 β-CGTase had revealed a maltononaose inhibitor bound to the enzyme in an extended conformation. An identical experiment with the CGTase from T. thermosulfurigenes EM1 resulted in a 2.6-Å resolution x-ray structure of a complex with a maltohexaose inhibitor, bound in a different conformation. We hypothesize that the new maltohexaose conformation is related to the enhanced α-cyclodextrin production of the CGTase.
The detailed structural information subsequently allowed engineering of the cyclodextrin product specificity of the CGTase from T. thermosulfurigenes EM1 by site-directed mutagenesis. Mutation D371R was aimed at hindering the maltohexaose conformation and resulted in enhanced production of larger size cyclodextrins (β- and γ-CD). Mutation D197H was aimed at stabilization of the new maltohexaose conformation and resulted in increased production of α-CD.
Glu258 is involved in catalysis in CGTases as well as α-amylases, and is the proton donor in the first step of the cyclization reaction. Amino acids close to Glu258 in the CGTase from T. thermosulfurigenes EM1 were changed. Phe284 was replaced by Lys and Asn327 by Asp. The mutants showed changes in both the high and low pH slopes of the optimum curve for cyclization and hydrolysis when compared with the wild-type enzyme. This suggests that the pH optimum curve of CGTase is determined only by residue Glu258.
Optical Identification of the ASCA Large Sky Survey
We present results of optical identification of the X-ray sources detected in
the ASCA Large Sky Survey. Optical spectroscopic observations were done for 34
X-ray sources which were detected with the SIS in the 2-7 keV band above 3.5
sigma. The sources are identified with 30 AGNs, 2 clusters of galaxies, and 1
galactic star. Only 1 source is still unidentified. The flux limit of the
sample corresponds to 1 x 10^{-13} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the 2-10 keV band.
Based on the sample, the paper discusses optical and X-ray spectral
properties of the AGNs, contribution of the sources to the Cosmic X-ray
Background, and redshift and luminosity distributions of the AGNs. An
interesting result is that the redshift distribution of the AGNs suggests a
deficiency of high-redshift (0.5 10^{44}

The Period Changes of the Cepheid RT Aurigae
Observations of the light curve for the 3.7-day Cepheid RT Aur both before
and since 1980 indicate that the variable is undergoing an overall period
increase, amounting to +0.082 +-0.012 s/yr, rather than a period decrease, as
implied by all observations prior to 1980. Superposed on the star's O-C
variations is a sinusoidal trend that cannot be attributed to random
fluctuations in pulsation period. Rather, it appears to arise from light travel
time effects in a binary system. The derived orbital period for the system is P
= 26,429 +-89 days (72.36 +-0.24 years). The inferred orbital parameters from
the O-C residuals differ from those indicated by existing radial velocity data.
The latter imply the most reasonable results, namely a1 sin i = 9.09 (+-1.81) x
10^8 km and a minimum secondary mass of M2 = 1.15 +-0.25 Msun. Continued
monitoring of the brightness and radial velocity changes in the Cepheid are
necessary to confirm the long-term trend and to provide data for a proper

Study of the structure and kinematics of the NGC 7465/64/63 triplet galaxies
This paper is devoted to the analysis of new observational data for the group
of galaxies NGC 7465/64/63, which were obtained at the 6-m telescope of the
Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS)
with the multimode instrument SCORPIO and the Multi Pupil Fiber Spectrograph.
For one of group members (NGC 7465) the presence of a polar ring was suspected.
Large-scale brightness distributions, velocity and velocity dispersion fields
of the ionized gas for all three galaxies as well as line-of-sight velocity
curves on the basis of emission and absorption lines and a stellar velocity
field in the central region for NGC 7465 were constructed. As a result of the
analysis of the obtained information, we revealed an inner stellar disk (r ~
0.5 kpc) and a warped gaseous disk in addition to the main stellar disk, in NGC
7465. On the basis of the joint study of photometric and spectral data it was
ascertained that NGC 7464 is the irregular galaxy of the IrrI type, whose
structural and kinematic peculiarities resulted most likely from the
gravitational interaction with NGC 7465. The velocity field of the ionized gas
of NGC 7463 turned out typical for spiral galaxies with a bar, and the bending
of outer parts of its disk could arise owing to the close encounter with one of
