Common Discourse Patterns of Cross-diciplinary Research Article Abstracts in English

Because of its important role in the advancement of science, attempts have been made to investigate research article abstracts in terms of both their discourse patterning and their linguistic characteristics. This research is an attempt to examine their rhetorical patterning. More specifically, it addresses the questions what common discourse patterns research article abstracts have and whether abstracts from different disciplines show different patterns. The research corpus contained 50 research article abstracts collected from five International journals published in the fields of biology, engineering, linguistics, medicine and physics. The data were analyzed using a four-move abstract structure developed by Hardjanto (1997). The results showed that Moves 1, 3 and 4 were found in most abstracts, and were, therefore, considered as obligatory moves in the abstracts. The most common pattern was found to be a pattern containing all the four moves in the order of 1-2-3-4, especially in abstracts from medicine and linguistics. Another common pattern was a 1-3-4 pattern, found especially in abstracts from biology and physics, whereas abstracts from engineering did not show any preference for a specific pattern even though 40% of them had a 1-2-3-4 pattern. These results suggest that there is a significant disciplinary variation in English research article abstract patterning

A comprehensive clinical examinations of infants with perinatal pathology history suffering from the disorders of the functional state of gastrointestinal tract were conducted. Intestinal microbiocenosis changes were revealed; they are most likely to extend liver and bileexcreting tract dysfunction. Early diagnosis of the detected changes makes possible to improve functional state of intestine in infants and ignore dysbiosis signs

Hyperuricemia is a condition where there is an elevated blood uric acid level above normal range. Hyperuricemia occurs due to increased uric acid metabolism, decreased uric acid expenditure, or a combination of both. The Jamu formula containingPiper retrofractum, Plantago majorandApiumgraveolens have the potential to overcome hyperuricemia. This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of formula inhuman subjects with hyperuricemia. The method used was pre and posttest design for 28 days. Safety parameters were assessed by renal function (urea and creatinine) and liver function (SGOT and SGPT). The parameters of efficacy were measured by uric acid change (H0, H14, and H28), improvement of clinical symptoms and quality of life (SF-36). This study showed that kidney and liver function still in the normal rangeafter28 days of intervention. The levels of uric acid showed a significant decrease (p <0.05). Clinical symptoms of the subjectsimproved after 17 daysofintervention. SF-36indicated significant improvement (p <0.05). It can be concluded that the formula was proved to be safe and effective for 28 daysof intervention

Background: Indonesian herbs have several formulas which have been used traditionally to reduce pain of osteoarthritis (OA). However, there is a lack of evidence of its efficacy and safety. The objectives of study were to investigate the efficacy and safety of a traditional formula for OA. Methods: Design of the study was a randomized clinical trial (RCT) involved 123 patients (subjects) for 28 days intervention. This study was conducted between March - December 2014 with 30 physicians were participated at 20 regencies in Indonesia. The variables measured were VAS score, PGAP functional status assessment (FSA), and Short Form (SF-36) to assess jamu efficacy in comparison to piroxicam. To evaluate the safety of jamu formula using values of SGOT, SGPT, BUN, and creatinine. Result: The jamu formula administration effects can reduce VAS significantly (p<0.05) if it was compared to baseline. FSA score of jamu formula group was decreased significantly (p=0.000) when compared to the start of intervention. Short Form (SF)-36 of jamu formula group were significantly improved when compared with baseline value. The result of the three parameters between jamu group and piroxicam group should not significantly different. There was no difference in those parameters between both groups (p>0.05). In biological parameters, SGPT, SGOT, BUN, and creatinine level, showed normal range in both groups. Conclusion: This study showed that the efficacy and safety of jamu formula was clinically comparable to piroxicam after 28 days of treatment

Hemorrhoids is a disease with a quite large prevalence in the community. Hemorrhoids therapy using traditional medicine is an alternative for patients. Hereditary, some medicinal plants and its combination used to treat hemorrhoids. This study aims to determine the efficacy and safety of Jamu that contains 15g Graptophyllum pictum dried leaves, 12g Desmodium triquetrum dried leaves, 9g Coleus atropurpureus dried leaves, 3g Curcuma domestica rhizomes, 3g Curcuma xanthorriza rhizomes ,and 3g Phylanthus niruri herbs. The method was open label randomized clinical trial with diosmin hisperidin as a comparison. A total of 136 subjects voluntarily participated in this study. 136 subjects were randomized using the method of sequence generation and divide into 2 (two) groups (comparator drugs and Jamu) for 56 days intervention. Sikirov score, frequency of recurrence, and SF-36 were evaluated at the end of the intervention. Jamu and comparator drugs showed p values: 0.253; 0.057; and 0.621 at the end of intervention. The value of p > 0.05 indicates insignificant difference between jamu and comparator drugs. Parameters of liver and kidney function showed in the normal range. Jamu formula of hemorrhoids is comparable to the comparator drugs diosmin hesperidin and safe to use

Quiescent consistency: Defining and verifying relaxed linearizability

Concurrent data structures like stacks, sets or queues need to be highly optimized to provide large degrees of parallelism with reduced contention. Linearizability, a key consistency condition for concurrent objects, sometimes limits the potential for optimization. Hence algorithm designers have started to build concurrent data structures that are not linearizable but only satisfy relaxed consistency requirements. In this paper, we study quiescent consistency as proposed by Shavit and Herlihy, which is one such relaxed condition. More precisely, we give the first formal definition of quiescent consistency, investigate its relationship with linearizability, and provide a proof technique for it based on (coupled) simulations. We demonstrate our proof technique by verifying quiescent consistency of a (non-linearizable) FIFO queue built using a diffraction tree. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland

Background: The number of people with diabetes mellitus in Indonesia is increasing every year. The data in 2016 showed that 1 of 11 adults could have diabetes mellitus. Uncontrolled and untreated diabetes mellitus can cause complications. Objectives: This activity aimed to determine the group of age that have a potential risk of hypertension and diabetes so that it could minimize the prevalence of disease and optimize human productivity. Methods: (1) Counseling about hypertension and diabetes, (2) Screening the people with a potential risk of hypertension using tensimeter and diabetes prediction using point-of-care testing (POCT) and urine dipstick. Results: The data were collected from 75 respondents with characteristics about 85,33% female and 14,67% male. About 25 respondents (33,33%) were suspected of hypertension. Based on age group, it showed that the highest incident rate of hypertension was found in the age group of 41-60 years (41,86%), followed by the age group of 61-80 years (20%), 21-40 years (13,33%), and age under 20 years and above 80 years (0%). The majority of respondents had a normal glucose level(90,67%). Based on gender, there was 1 male respondent (9,09%)and5female respondents (7,81%) having a glucose level higher than normal value (hyperglycemia). Conclusion: The age group with the highest potential risk for hypertension was 41-60 years, while for diabetes was 61-80 years. This activity provided information to prevent the potential risk leading to hypertension and diabetes
