Measuring vaccine confidence: introducing a global vaccine confidence index.
BACKGROUND: Public confidence in vaccination is vital to the success of immunisation programmes worldwide. Understanding the dynamics of vaccine confidence is therefore of great importance for global public health. Few published studies permit global comparisons of vaccination sentiments and behaviours against a common metric. This article presents the findings of a multi-country survey of confidence in vaccines and immunisation programmes in Georgia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom (UK) - these being the first results of a larger project to map vaccine confidence globally. METHODS: Data were collected from a sample of the general population and from those with children under 5 years old against a core set of confidence questions. All surveys were conducted in the relevant local-language in Georgia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the UK. We examine confidence in immunisation programmes as compared to confidence in other government health services, the relationships between confidence in the system and levels of vaccine hesitancy, reasons for vaccine hesitancy, ultimate vaccination decisions, and their variation based on country contexts and demographic factors. RESULTS: The numbers of respondents by country were: Georgia (n=1000); India (n=1259); Pakistan (n=2609); UK (n=2055); Nigerian households (n=12554); and Nigerian health providers (n=1272). The UK respondents with children under five years of age were more likely to hesitate to vaccinate, compared to other countries. Confidence in immunisation programmes was more closely associated with confidence in the broader health system in the UK (Spearman's ρ=0.5990), compared to Nigeria (ρ=0.5477), Pakistan (ρ=0.4491), and India (ρ=0.4240), all of which ranked confidence in immunisation programmes higher than confidence in the broader health system. Georgia had the highest rate of vaccine refusals (6 %) among those who reported initial hesitation. In all other countries surveyed most respondents who reported hesitating to vaccinate went on to receive the vaccine except in Kano state, Nigeria, where the percentage of those who ultimately refused vaccination after initially hesitating was as high as 76%) Reported reasons for hesitancy in all countries were classified under the domains of "confidence," "convenience," or "complacency," and confidence issues were found to be the primary driver of hesitancy in all countries surveyed
TensorFlow Estimators: Managing Simplicity vs. Flexibility in High-Level Machine Learning Frameworks
We present a framework for specifying, training, evaluating, and deploying
machine learning models. Our focus is on simplifying cutting edge machine
learning for practitioners in order to bring such technologies into production.
Recognizing the fast evolution of the field of deep learning, we make no
attempt to capture the design space of all possible model architectures in a
domain- specific language (DSL) or similar configuration language. We allow
users to write code to define their models, but provide abstractions that guide
develop- ers to write models in ways conducive to productionization. We also
provide a unifying Estimator interface, making it possible to write downstream
infrastructure (e.g. distributed training, hyperparameter tuning) independent
of the model implementation. We balance the competing demands for flexibility
and simplicity by offering APIs at different levels of abstraction, making
common model architectures available out of the box, while providing a library
of utilities designed to speed up experimentation with model architectures. To
make out of the box models flexible and usable across a wide range of problems,
these canned Estimators are parameterized not only over traditional
hyperparameters, but also using feature columns, a declarative specification
describing how to interpret input data. We discuss our experience in using this
framework in re- search and production environments, and show the impact on

Neutrino Mass, Sneutrino Dark Matter and Signals of Lepton Flavor Violation in the MRSSM
We study the phenomenology of mixed-sneutrino dark matter in the Minimal
R-Symmetric Supersymmetric Standard Model (MRSSM). Mixed sneutrinos fit
naturally within the MRSSM, as the smallness (or absence) of neutrino Yukawa
couplings singles out sneutrino A-terms as the only ones not automatically
forbidden by R-symmetry. We perform a study of randomly generated sneutrino
mass matrices and find that (i) the measured value of is well
within the range of typical values obtained for the relic abundance of the
lightest sneutrino, (ii) with small lepton-number-violating mass terms
for the right-handed sneutrinos, random
matrices satisfying the constraint have a decent probability of
satisfying direct detection constraints, and much of the remaining parameter
space will be probed by upcoming experiments, (iii) the terms radiatively generate appropriately small Majorana neutrino
masses, with neutrino oscillation data favoring a mostly sterile lightest
sneutrino with a dominantly mu/tau-flavored active component, and (iv) a
sneutrino LSP with a significant mu component can lead to striking signals of

For decades, optical time-domain searches have been tuned to find ordinary supernovae, which rise and fall in brightness over a period of weeks. Recently, supernova searches have improved their cadences and a handful of fast-evolving luminous transients have been identified(1-5). These have peak luminosities comparable to type Ia supernovae, but rise to maximum in less than ten days and fade from view in less than one month. Here we present the most extreme example of this class of object thus far: KSN 2015K, with a rise time of only 2.2 days and a time above half-maximum of only 6.8 days. We show that, unlike type Ia supernovae, the light curve of KSN 2015K was not powered by the decay of radioactive elements. We further argue that it is unlikely that it was powered by continuing energy deposition from a central remnant (a magnetar or black hole). Using numerical radiation hydrodynamical models, we show that the light curve of KSN 2015K is well fitted by a model where the supernova runs into external material presumably expelled in a pre-supernova mass-loss episode. The rapid rise of KSN 2015K therefore probes the venting of photons when a hypersonic shock wave breaks out of a dense extended medium.NASA

Baryon Number in Warped GUTs : Model Building and (Dark Matter Related) Phenomenology
In the past year, a new non-supersymmetric framework for electroweak symmetry
breaking (with or without Higgs) involving SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R * U(1)_{B-L} in
higher dimensional warped geometry has been suggested. In this work, we embed
this gauge structure into a GUT such as SO(10) or Pati-Salam. We showed
recently (in hep-ph/0403143) that in a warped GUT, a stable Kaluza-Klein
fermion can arise as a consequence of imposing proton stability. Here, we
specify a complete realistic model where this particle is a weakly interacting
right-handed neutrino, and present a detailed study of this new dark matter
candidate, providing relic density and detection predictions. We discuss
phenomenological aspects associated with the existence of other light (<~ TeV)
KK fermions (related to the neutrino), whose lightness is a direct consequence
of the top quark's heaviness. The AdS/CFT interpretation of this construction
is also presented. Most of our qualitative results do not depend on the nature
of the breaking of the electroweak symmetry provided that it happens near the

Seeing the big PICTURE: A framework for improving the communication of requirements within the Business-IT relationship
The relationship between the business and IT departments in the context of the organisation has been characterised as highly divisive. Contributing problems appear to revolve around the failure to adequately communicate and understand the required information for the alignment of business and IT strategies and infrastructures. This study takes a communication-based view on the concept of alignment, in terms of the relationship between the retail business and IT within a major high street UK bank. A research framework (PICTURE) is used to provide insight into this relationship and guide the analysis of interviews with 29 individuals on mid-high management level for their thematic content. The paper highlights the lessons that can be derived from the study of the BIT relationship and how possible improvements could be made
How Sales Taxes Affect Customer and Firm Behavior: The Role of Search on the Internet
When a multichannel retailer opens its first retail store in a state, the firm is obligated to collect sales taxes on all Internet and catalog orders shipped to that state. This article assesses how opening a store affects Internet and catalog demand. The authors analyze purchase behavior among customers who live far from the retail store but must now pay sales taxes on catalog and Internet purchases. A comparable group of customers in a neighboring state serves as a control. The results show that Internet sales decrease significantly, but catalog sales are unaffected. Further investigation indicates that the difference in these outcomes is partly attributable to the ease with which customers can search for lower prices at competing retailers. The authors extend the analysis to a panel of multichannel firms and show that retailers that earn a large proportion of their revenue from direct channels avoid opening a first store in high-tax states. They conclude that current U.S. sales taxes laws have significant effects on both customer and firm behavior
Discovery of Four Gravitationally Lensed Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the discovery of four gravitationally lensed quasars selected from
the spectroscopic quasar catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We describe
imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations that support the lensing
interpretation of the following four quasars: SDSS J0832+0404 (image separation
\theta=1.98", source redshift z_s=1.115, lens redshift z_l=0.659); SDSS
J1216+3529 (\theta=1.49", z_s=2.012); SDSS J1322+1052 (\theta=2.00",
z_s=1.716); and SDSS J1524+4409 (\theta=1.67", z_s=1.210, z_l=0.320). Each
system has two lensed images. We find that the fainter image component of SDSS
J0832+0404 is significantly redder than the brighter component, perhaps because
of differential reddening by the lensing galaxy. The lens potential of SDSS
J1216+3529 might be complicated by the presence of a secondary galaxy near the

AKARI and BLAST Observations of the Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant and Surrounding Interstellar Medium
We use new large area far infrared maps ranging from 65 - 500 microns
obtained with the AKARI and the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter
Telescope (BLAST) missions to characterize the dust emission toward the
Cassiopeia A supernova remnant (SNR). Using the AKARI high resolution data we
find a new "tepid" dust grain population at a temperature of ~35K and with an
estimated mass of 0.06 solar masses. This component is confined to the central
area of the SNR and may represent newly-formed dust in the unshocked supernova
ejecta. While the mass of tepid dust that we measure is insufficient by itself
to account for the dust observed at high redshift, it does constitute an
additional dust population to contribute to those previously reported. We fit
our maps at 65, 90, 140, 250, 350, and 500 microns to obtain maps of the column
density and temperature of "cold" dust (near 16 K) distributed throughout the
region. The large column density of cold dust associated with clouds seen in
molecular emission extends continuously from the surrounding interstellar
medium to project on the SNR, where the foreground component of the clouds is
also detectable through optical, X-ray, and molecular extinction. At the
resolution available here, there is no morphological signature to isolate any
cold dust associated only with the SNR from this confusing interstellar
emission. Our fit also recovers the previously detected "hot" dust in the
