    On the Theory of Wave Packets

    Full text link
    In this paper we discuss some aspects of the theory of wave packets. We consider a popular non-covariant Gaussian model used in various applications and show that it predicts too slow a longitudinal dispersion rate for relativistic particles. We revise this approach by considering a covariant model of Gaussian wave packets, and examine our results by inspecting a wave packet of arbitrary form. A general formula for the time dependence of the dispersion of a wave packet of arbitrary form is found. Finally, we give a transparent interpretation of the disappearance of the wave function over time due to the dispersion --- a feature often considered undesirable, but which is unavoidable for wave packets. We find, starting from simple examples, proceeding with their generalizations and finally by considering the continuity equation, that the integral over time of both the flux and probability densities are asymptotically proportional to the factor 1/L^2 in the rest frame of the wave packet, just as in the case of an ensemble of classical particles.Comment: Accepted to PEPAN Letter

    Electron Screening in the 7Be + p -->8B + photon reaction

    Full text link
    We evaluate the effect of screening by bound electron in the 7Be + p --> 8B + photon reaction, where 7Be target contains bound electron, in the framework of the adiabatic representation of the three particle problem. A comparison with two other approximations (united atom and folding) is presented. A good agreement between the ``united atom'' approximation and the exact solution is found. We also discuss the screening corrections induced by two K-shell electrons on a 7Be target. The bound electron screening effect consequences for 7Be and 8B solar neutrino fluxes are discussed.Comment: Revised paper. (RevTeX, 6 pages, 2 PS-figures

    Two- and Three-particle States in a Nonrelativistic Four-fermion Model in the Fine-tuning Renormalization Scheme. Goldstone mode "against" extension theory

    In a nonrelativistic contact four-fermion model we show that simple regularisation prescriptions together with a definite fine-tuning of the cut-off-parameter dependence of ``bare'' quantities give the exact solutions for the two-particle sector and Goldstone modes. Their correspondence with the self-adjoint extension into Pontryagin space is established leading to self-adjoint semi-bounded Hamiltonians in three-particle sectors as well. Renormalized Faddeev equations for the bound states with Fredholm properties are obtained and analysed.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, changed content, added references and two figures, to appear in the Few Body System

    Topological phase in two flavor neutrino oscillations

    Full text link
    We show that the phase appearing in neutrino flavor oscillation formulae has a geometric and topological contribution. We identify a topological phase appearing in the two flavor neutrino oscillation formula using Pancharatnam's prescription of quantum collapses between non-orthogonal states. Such quantum collapses appear naturally in the expression for appearance and survival probabilities of neutrinos. Our analysis applies to neutrinos propagating in vacuum or through matter. For the minimal case of two flavors with CP conservation, our study shows for the first time that there is a geometric interpretation of the neutrino oscillation formulae for the detection probability of neutrino species.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys. Prompt muon contribution to the flux underwater

    We present high energy spectra and zenith-angle distributions of the atmospheric muons computed for the depths of the locations of the underwater neutrino telescopes. We compare the calculations with the data obtained in the Baikal and the AMANDA muon experiments. The prompt muon contribution to the muon flux underwater due to recent perturbative QCD-based models of the charm production is expected to be observable at depths of the large underwater neutrino telescopes. This appears to be probable even at rather shallow depths (1-2 km), provided that the energy threshold for muon detection is raised above 100\sim 100 TeV.Comment: 7 pages, RevTeX, 7 eps figures, final version to be published in Phys.Rev.D; a few changes made in the text and the figures, an approximation formula for muon spectra at the sea level, the muon zenith-angle distribution table data and references adde
