Au9+ swift heavy ion irradiation of Zn[CS(NH2)2]3SO4 crystal: Crystalline perfection and optical properties
The single crystal of tris(thiourea)zinc sulphate (Zn[CS(NH2)2]3SO4) was
irradiated by 150 MeV Au9+ swift heavy ions and analyzed in comparison with
pure crystal for crystalline perfection and optical properties. The Fourier
transform infrared and x-ray powder diffraction inferred that swift ions lead
the disordering and breaking of molecular bonds in lattice without formation of
new structural phases. High resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) revealed the
abundance of point defects, and formation of mosaics and low angle grain
boundaries in the irradiated region of crystal. The swift ion irradiation found
to affect the lattice vibrational modes and functional groups significantly.
The defects induced by heavy ions act as the color centers and resulted in
enhance of photoluminescence emission intensity. The optical transparency and
band gap found to be decreased.Comment: 7 page
Fluctuations in Ca, Mg and P levels in the hemolymph, muscle, midgut gland and exoskeleton during the moult cycle of the Indian white prawn, Penaeus indicus (Decapoda: Penaeidae)
Fluctuations of Ca, Mg and P in the hemolymph, midgut gland, muscle and exoskeleton of the penaeid prawn Penaeus indicus during different stages of the moulting cycle have been investigated. 2. Haemolymph, midgut gland and muscle showed a high content of Ca during late premoult stages and low content in late postmoult and intermoult stages. In exoskeletal tissue the Ca level was high in intermoult and early premoult stages and the lowest level was recorded in the early postmoult stage. Magnesium showed an almost similar trend to that of Ca. Phosphorus content did not show noticeable changes in haemolymph and muscle during moult cycle; in exoskeleton, higher levels were recorded in last premoult and early postmoult stages. 3. Fatty acid profiles of spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) phyllosoma fed enriched Artemia

(phyllosoma) of Panulirus homarus were fed A1-Selco-
enriched Artemia in two culture treatments, one
with the microalgae Nannochloropsis salina (green
water) and the other without the microalgae (clear
water) to assess the ability to manipulate their fatty
acid composition. Phyllosoma fed with 3-h A1-
Selco-enriched Artemia salina attained Stage VIII
(5.3mm) and StageV (3.4mm) in 42 days in the green
and clear water treatments respectively. The higher
content of the essential fatty acids in N. salina (eicosapentaenoic
acid, 25.8%; arachidonic acid, 9.5%;
and docosahexaenoic acid, 4.2%) in the green water
system increased the fatty acid content of the live
food Artemia, and ultimately the phyllosoma

Direct observation of incommensurate magnetism in Hubbard chains
The interplay between magnetism and doping is at the origin of exotic
strongly correlated electronic phases and can lead to novel forms of magnetic
ordering. One example is the emergence of incommensurate spin-density waves
with a wave vector that does not match the reciprocal lattice. In one dimension
this effect is a hallmark of Luttinger liquid theory, which also describes the
low energy physics of the Hubbard model. Here we use a quantum simulator based
on ultracold fermions in an optical lattice to directly observe such
incommensurate spin correlations in doped and spin-imbalanced Hubbard chains
using fully spin and density resolved quantum gas microscopy. Doping is found
to induce a linear change of the spin-density wave vector in excellent
agreement with Luttinger theory predictions. For non-zero polarization we
observe a decrease of the wave vector with magnetization as expected from the
Heisenberg model in a magnetic field. We trace the microscopic origin of these
incommensurate correlations to holes, doublons and excess spins which act as
delocalized domain walls for the antiferromagnetic order. Finally, when
inducing interchain coupling we observe fundamentally different spin
correlations around doublons indicating the formation of a magnetic polaron
Genetic variants in a sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter gene and age-related cataract.
BACKGROUND: Cataract is a major health burden in many countries and a significant problem in India. While observational studies show lower cataract risk with increasing dietary or plasma vitamin C, randomised controlled trials of supplements have been negative. Genetic variants in vitamin C transporter proteins (SLC23A1), especially rs33972313, may provide evidence on a causal association of vitamin C with cataract. METHODS: We used data from a randomly selected population-based study in people aged 60 years and above in north and south India. Of 7518 sampled, 5428 (72%) were interviewed for socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, attended hospital for lens imaging and blood collection and were subsequently genotyped for rs33972313 and rs6596473. Mixed or pure types of cataract were graded by the Lens Opacity Classification System III as nuclear (2404), cortical (494) or posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) (1026); 1462 had no significant cataract and no history of cataract surgery and 775 had bilateral aphakia/pseudophakia. RESULTS: rs33972313 was associated with cortical (OR 2.16; 95% CI 1.34 to 3.49, p=0.002) and PSC (OR 1.68; 95% CI 1.06 to 2.65, p=0.03) but not with nuclear cataract. In analyses of pure cataracts, associations were found only between rs33972313 and pure cortical cataracts (OR 2.29; 95% CI 1.12 to 4.65, p=0.03) and with a standardised cortical opacity score. There was no association with rs6596473 and any cataract outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Using an established genetic variant as a proxy for lifetime ascorbate concentrations, our results support a causal association of vitamin C with cataract
