Graphite under uniaxial compression along the c axis: A parameter to relate out-of-plane strain to in-plane phonon frequency
Stacking graphene sheets forms graphite. Two in-plane vibrational modes of
graphite, E1u and E2g(2), are derived from graphene E2g mode, the shifts of
which under compression are all considered as results of in-plane bond
shortening. Values of Gruneisen parameter have been reported to quantify such
relation. However, the reason why the shift rates of these three modes with
pressure differ is unclear. In this work, we introduce a new parameter to
quantify the contribution of out-of-plane strain to the in-plane vibrational
frequencies, suggesting that the compression of \pi-electrons plays a

Pressure coefficients of Raman modes of carbon nanotubes resolved by chirality: Environmental effect on graphene sheet
Studies of the mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are
hindered by the availability only of ensembles of tubes with a range of
diameters. Tunable Raman excitation spectroscopy picks out identifiable tubes.
Under high pressure, the radial breathing mode shows a strong environmental
effect shown here to be largely independent of the nature of the environment .
For the G-mode, the pressure coefficient varies with diameter consistent with
the thick-wall tube model. However, results show an unexpectedly strong
environmental effect on the pressure coefficients. Reappraisal of data for
graphene and graphite gives the G-mode Grueuneisen parameter gamma = 1.34 and

Cardio-metabolic impact of changing sitting, standing, and stepping in the workplace
According to cross-sectional and acute experimental evidence, reducing sitting time should improve cardio-metabolic health risk biomarkers. Furthermore, the improvements obtained may depend on whether sitting is replaced with standing or ambulatory activities. Based on data from the Stand Up Victoria multi-component workplace intervention, we examined this issue using compositional data analysis - a method that can examine and compare all activity changes simultaneously.Participants receiving the intervention (n=136 ≥0.6 full-time equivalent desk-based workers, 65% women, mean±SD age=44.6 ±9.1 years from seven worksites) were asked to improve whole-of-day activity by standing up, sitting less and moving more. Their changes in the composition of daily waking hours (activPAL-assessed sitting, standing, stepping) were quantified, then tested for associations with concurrent changes in cardio-metabolic risk (CMR) scores and 14 biomarkers concerning body composition, glucose, insulin and lipid metabolism. Theoretical investigations of a highly mismatched interface: the case of SiC/Si(001)
Using first principles, classical potentials, and elasticity theory, we
investigated the structure of a semiconductor/semiconductor interface with a
high lattice mismatch, SiC/Si(001). Among several tested possible
configurations, a heterostructure with (i) a misfit dislocation network pinned
at the interface and (ii) reconstructed dislocation cores with a carbon
substoichiometry is found to be the most stable one. The importance of the slab
approximation in first-principles calculations is discussed and estimated by
combining classical potential techniques and elasticity theory. For the most
stable configuration, an estimate of the interface energy is given. Finally,
the electronic structure is investigated and discussed in relation with the
dislocation array structure. Interface states, localized in the heterostructure
gap and located on dislocation cores, are identified
A bi-directional relationship between obesity and health-related quality of life : evidence from the longitudinal AusDiab study
Objective: To assess the prospective relationship between obesity and health-related quality of life, including a novel assessment of the impact of health-related quality of life on weight gain.Design and setting: Longitudinal, national, population-based Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) study, with surveys conducted in 1999/2000 and 2004/2005.Participants: A total of 5985 men and women aged 25 years at study entry.Main outcome measure(s): At both time points, height, weight and waist circumference were measured and self-report data on health-related quality of life from the SF-36 questionnaire were obtained. Cross-sectional and bi-directional, prospective associations between obesity categories and health-related quality of life were assessed.Results: Higher body mass index (BMI) at baseline was associated with deterioration in health-related quality of life over 5 years for seven of the eight health-related quality of life domains in women (all P0.01, with the exception of mental health, P>0.05), and six out of eight in men (all P<0.05, with the exception of role-emotional, P=0.055, and mental health, P>0.05). Each of the quality-of-life domains related to mental health as well as the mental component summary were inversely associated with BMI change (all P<0.0001 for women and P0.01 for men), with the exception of vitality, which was significant in women only (P=0.008). For the physical domains, change in BMI was inversely associated with baseline general health in women only (P=0.023).Conclusions: Obesity was associated with a deterioration in health-related quality of life (including both physical and mental health domains) in this cohort of Australian adults followed over 5 years. Health-related quality of life was also a predictor of weight gain over 5 years, indicating a bi-directional association between obesity and health-related quality of life. The identification of those with poor health-related quality of life may be important in assessing the risk of future weight gain, and a focus on health-related quality of life may be beneficial in weight management strategies.<br /
Chemical Pressure and Physical Pressure in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_{x})_2
Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, under
hydrostatic pressure via bulk AC susceptibility were carried out on several
concentrations of phosphorous substitution in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2. The
pressure dependence of unsubstituted BaFe_2As_2, phosphorous concentration
dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2, as well as the pressure dependence of
BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 all point towards an identical maximum T_c of 31 K. This
demonstrates that phosphorous substitution and physical pressure result in
similar superconducting phase diagrams, and that phosphorous substitution does

Enhancement of Magneto-Optic Effects via Large Atomic Coherence
We utilize the generation of large atomic coherence to enhance the resonant
nonlinear magneto-optic effect by several orders of magnitude, thereby
eliminating power broadening and improving the fundamental signal-to-noise
ratio. A proof-of-principle experiment is carried out in a dense vapor of Rb
atoms. Detailed numerical calculations are in good agreement with the
experimental results. Applications such as optical magnetometry or the search
for violations of parity and time reversal symmetry are feasible

Reducing office workers' sitting time: rationale and study design for the Stand Up Victoria cluster randomized trial
Background: Excessive time spent in sedentary behaviours (sitting or lying with low energy expenditure) is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Desk-based office workers typically accumulate high amounts of daily sitting time, often in prolonged unbroken bouts.
