An improved analytical model of the separation region on boattail nozzles at subsonic speeds
A practical engineering calculation was developed to model the viscous effects of a separated, reverse flow region on afterbody pressures and drag. This viscous calculation was iteratively coupled with an inviscid flow calculation by means of an aerodynamic interface. A standard boundary layer displacement thickness was used to modify the afterbody shape where the flow was attached. A discriminating streamline calculation was developed to account for displacement effects of the reverse flow in separated regions with and without a flowing jet. The viscous flow calculation was coupled with a potential flow calculation. The analysis accurately predicted afterbody pressures and drag with variations in Reynolds number, Mach number, and afterbody shape
Development and fabrication of high strength alloy fibers for use in metal-metal matrix composites
Metal fiber reinforced superalloys are being considered for construction of critical components in turbine engines that operate at high temperature. The problems involved in fabricating refractory metal alloys into wire form in such a manner as to maximize their strength properties without developing excessive structural defects are described. The fundamental principles underlying the development of such alloy fibers are also briefly discussed. The progress made to date in developing tungsten, tantalum and columbium base alloys for fiber reinforcement is reported and future prospects for alloy fiber development considered

We describe a simplified scheme for quantum logic with a collection of
laser-cooled trapped atomic ions. Building on the scheme of Cirac and Zoller,
we show how the fundamental controlled-NOT gate between a collective mode of
ion motion and the internal states of a single ion can be reduced to a single
laser pulse, and the need for a third auxiliary internal electronic state can

Triple mode Cepheid masses
Unconventional composition structures are proposed to explain the periods of the triple mode Cepheid aC And. A strong Cepheid wind appears to enrich helium in the convection zones down to about 60,000 K or 70,000 K. Then some downward partial mixing occurs to the bottom of a layer with about 1-q = .0005 of the stellar mass. It was found that AC And was not unlike anomalous Cepheids. However, masses of betwen one and two solar masses are suggested and the population is more likely a type two
Managerial Compensation in Midwestern Cooperatives: Results from a Follow-up Study
Results are presented from a follow-up survey of managerial compensation practices in local farm supply and marketing cooperatives in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. In contrast to findings from the original survey, total compensation levels, bonuses, and changes in compensation are all found to be positively and significantly associated with local net margin and not closely related to sales and sales growth.Agribusiness,
Coal thickness gauge using RRAS techniques, part 1
A noncontacting sensor having a measurement range of 0 to 6 in or more, and with an accuracy of 0.5 in or better is needed to control the machinery used in modern coal mining so that the thickness of the coal layer remaining over the rock is maintained within selected bounds. The feasibility of using the radiofrequency resonance absorption (RRAS) techniques of electron magnetic resonance (EMR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as the basis of a coal thickness gauge is discussed. The EMR technique was found, by analysis and experiments, to be well suited for this application
Magnetometeorology: Relationships between the weather and earth's magnetic field
A comparison of meteorological pressures and the strength of earth's magnetic field shows that the magnetic field exerts a controlling influence on the average pressure in the troposphere at high latitudes. The possibility of long-term changes in the goemagnetic field affecting the climate is discussed
