    DichroMatch: a website for similarity searching of circular dichroism spectra

    Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a widely used method for examining the structure, folding and conformational changes of proteins. A new online CD analysis server (DichroMatch) has been developed for identifying proteins with similar spectral characteristics by detecting possible structurally and functionally related proteins and homologues. DichroMatch includes six different methods for determining the spectral nearest neighbours to a query protein spectrum and provides metrics of how similar these spectra are and, if corresponding crystal structures are available for the closest matched proteins, information on their secondary structures and fold classifications. By default, DichroMatch uses all the entries in the Protein Circular Dichroism Data Bank (PCDDB) for its comparison set, providing the broadest range of publicly available protein spectra to match with the unknown protein. Alternatively, users can download or create their own specialized data sets, thereby enabling comparisons between the structures of related proteins such as wild-type versus mutants or homologues or a series of spectra of the same protein under different conditions. The apparatus is comprised of a core of ferromagnetic material and is surrounded by a cylinder made of a material that has superconducting properties when cooled below a critical temperature. A method is provided for producing a magnetic field through the ferromagnetic core. The core can also be split and pulled apart when it is required that the center of the cavity be left empty

    The design of inlets and nozzles and their interactions with the airplane which may account for a large percentage of the total drag of modern high performance aircraft is discussed. The inlet/airframe interactions program and the flight tests conducted is described. Inlet drag and lift data from a 7.5% wind-tunnel model are compared with data from an F-15 airplane with instrumentation to match the model. Pressure coefficient variations with variable cowl angles, capture ratios, examples of flow interactions and angles of attack are for Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 are presented

    The circadian clock is known to regulate a wide range of physiological and cellular processes, yet remarkably little is known about its role during embryo development. Zebrafish offer a unique opportunity to explore this issue, not only because a great deal is known about key developmental events in this species, but also because the clock starts on the very first day of development. In this study, we identified numerous rhythmic genes in zebrafish larvae, including the key transcriptional regulators neurod and cdx1b, which are involved in neuronal and intestinal differentiation, respectively. Rhythmic expression of neurod and several additional transcription factors was only observed in the developing retina. Surprisingly, these rhythms in expression commenced at a stage of development after these transcription factors are known to have played their essential role in photoreceptor differentiation. Furthermore, this circadian regulation was maintained in adult retina. Thus, once mature photoreceptors are formed, multiple retinal transcription factors fall under circadian clock control, at which point they appear to play a new and important role in regulating rhythmic elements in the phototransduction pathway

    Properties of Resolved Star Clusters in M51

    We present a study of compact star clusters in the nearby pair of interacting galaxies NGC 5194/95 (M51), based on multifilter Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 archival images. We have detected ~400 isolated clusters. Our requirement that clusters be detected based only on their morphology results in the selection of relatively isolated objects, and we estimate that we are missing the majority (by a factor 4-6) of <10 Myr clusters due to crowding. Hence we focus on the cluster population older than 10 Myr. An age distribution shows a broad peak between 100-500 Myr, which is consistent with the crossing times of NGC 5195 through the NGC 5194 disk estimated in both single and multiple-passage dynamical models. We estimate that the peak contains approximately 2.2-2.5 times more clusters than expected from a constant rate of cluster formation over this time interval. We estimate the effective radii of our sample clusters and find a median value of 3-4 pc. Additionally, we see correlations of increasing cluster size with cluster mass (with a best fit slope of 0.14\pm0.03) at the 4sigma level, and with cluster age (0.06\pm0.02) at the 3sigma level. Finally, we report for the first time the discovery of faint, extended star clusters in the companion, NGC 5195, an SB0 galaxy. These have red [(V-I)>1.0] colors, effective radii >7 pc, and are scattered over the disk of NGC 5195. Our results indicate that NGC 5195 is therefore currently the third known barred lenticular galaxy to have formed so-called "faint fuzzy" star clusters.     Optically pure heterobimetallic helicates from self-assembly and click strategies

    Single diastereomer, diamagnetic, octahedral Fe(II) tris chelate complexes are synthesised that contain three pendant pyridine proligands pre-organised for coordination to a second metal. They bind Cu(I) and Ag(I) with coordination geometry depending on the identity of the metal and the detail of the ligand structure, but for example homohelical (ΔFe,ΔCu) configured systems with unusual trigonal planar Cu cations are formed exclusively in solution as shown by VT-NMR and supported by DFT calculations. Similar heterobimetallic tris(triazole) complexes are synthesised via clean CuAAC reactions at a tris(alkynyl) complex, although here the configurations of the two metals differ (ΔFe,ΛCu), leading to the first optically pure heterohelicates. A second series of Fe complexes perform less well in either strategy as a result of lack of preorganisation

    What Fraction of the Young Clusters in the Antennae Galaxies are "Missing"?

    A reexamination of the correspondence between 6 cm radio continuum sources and young star clusters in the Antennae galaxies indicates that 85 % of the strong thermal sources have optical counterparts, once the optical image is shifted 1.2 arcsec to the southwest. A sample of 37 radio-optical matches are studied in detail showing correlations between radio properties and a variety of optical characteristics. There is a strong correlation between the radio flux and the intrinsic optical brightness. In particular, the brightest radio source is also the intrinsically brightest optical cluster (WS80). It is also the most extincted cluster in the sample, the strongest CO source and the strongest 15 micron source . Furthermore, the brightest ten radio sources are all amongst the youngest clusters with ages in the range 0 - 4 Myr and extinctions from A_V = 0.5 to 7.6 mag (with a median value of 2.6 mag). Only a few of the very red clusters originally discovered by Whitmore & Schweizer are radio sources, contrary to earlier suggestions. Finally, a new hybrid method of determining cluster ages has been developed using both UBVI colors and H_alpha equivalent widths to break the age-reddening degeneracy.Comment: 51 pages, 13 postscript figures, LaTex.
