A description of attitude control support being supplied by the Mission and Data Operations Directorate is presented. Included are descriptions of the computer programs being used to support the missions for attitude determination, prediction, and control. In addition, descriptions of the operating procedures which will be used to accomplish mission objectives are provided

Nonlinear metrology with a quantum interface

We describe nonlinear quantum atom-light interfaces and nonlinear quantum metrology in the collective continuous variable formalism. We develop a nonlinear effective Hamiltonian in terms of spin and polarization collective variables and show that model Hamiltonians of interest for nonlinear quantum metrology can be produced in 87^{87}Rb ensembles. With these Hamiltonians, metrologically relevant atomic properties, e.g. the collective spin, can be measured better than the "Heisenberg limit" 1/N\propto 1/N. In contrast to other proposed nonlinear metrology systems, the atom-light interface allows both linear and non-linear estimation of the same atomic quantities.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Cooperation of Sperm in Two Dimensions: Synchronization, Attraction and Aggregation through Hydrodynamic Interactions

    Get PDF
Sperm swimming at low Reynolds number have strong hydrodynamic interactions when their concentration is high in vivo or near substrates in vitro. The beating tails not only propel the sperm through a fluid, but also create flow fields through which sperm interact with each other. We study the hydrodynamic interaction and cooperation of sperm embedded in a two-dimensional fluid by using a particle-based mesoscopic simulation method, multi-particle collision dynamics (MPC). We analyze the sperm behavior by investigating the relationship between the beating-phase difference and the relative sperm position, as well as the energy consumption. Two effects of hydrodynamic interaction are found, synchronization and attraction. With these hydrodynamic effects, a multi-sperm system shows swarm behavior with a power-law dependence of the average cluster size on the width of the distribution of beating frequencies

Quantum interface between an electrical circuit and a single atom

We show how to bridge the divide between atomic systems and electronic devices by engineering a coupling between the motion of a single ion and the quantized electric field of a resonant circuit. Our method can be used to couple the internal state of an ion to the quantized circuit with the same speed as the internal-state coupling between two ions. All the well-known quantum information protocols linking ion internal and motional states can be converted to protocols between circuit photons and ion internal states. Our results enable quantum interfaces between solid state qubits, atomic qubits, and light, and lay the groundwork for a direct quantum connection between electrical and atomic metrology standards.Comment: Supplemental material available on reques

Best Practices in Second Stage Labor Care: Maternal Bearing Down and Positioning

    Get PDF
Despite evidence of adverse fetal and maternal outcomes from the use of sustained Valsalva bearing down efforts, current second-stage care practices are still characterized by uniform directions to “push” forcefully upon complete dilatation of the cervix while the woman is in a supine position. Directed pushing might slightly shorten the duration of second stage labor, but can also contribute to deoxygenation of the fetus; cause damage to urinary, pelvic, and perineal structures; and challenge a woman’s confidence in her body. Research on the second stage of labor care is reviewed, with a focus on recent literature on maternal bearing down efforts, the “laboring down” approach to care, second-stage duration, and maternal position. Clinicians can apply the scientific evidence regarding the detrimental effects of sustained Valsalva bearing down efforts and supine positioning by individualizing second stage labor care and supporting women’s involuntary bearing down sensations that can serve to guide her behaviors

Role of 5-HT receptor mechanisms in sub-chronic PCP-induced reversal learning deficits in the rat

YesRationale: 5-HT receptor mechanisms have been suggested to mediate improvements in cognition in schizophrenia. Aim: To investigate the involvement of 5-HT receptor mechanisms in sub-chronic PCP-induced reversal learning deficits in female rats, a task of relevance to schizophrenia. Methods: Adult female hooded-Lister rats were trained to perform an operant reversal learning task and then received sub-chronic PCP (2 mg/kg) or vehicle i.p. twice daily for seven days, followed by 7-days washout. Rats then received an acute dose of the 5-HT7 receptor antagonist SB-269970A (1.0, 3.0, 10.0 mg/kg; i.p.) or vehicle. In experiment 2, PCP-treated rats received the selective 5-HT2C receptor antagonist, SB-243213A acutely (1.0, 3.0, 10.0 mg/kg; i.p.) or vehicle. In experiment 3, PCP-treated rats received the 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist, buspirone (0.15625, 0.3125, 0.625 mg/kg, i.p.) in combination with the selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonist WAY-100635 (0.3, 1.0 mg/kg). Results: In all experiments sub-chronic PCP significantly impaired reversal phase performance (P<0.01-0.001), with no effect in the initial phase. SB-269970A at 3.0 and 10.0 mg/kg significantly improved the PCP-induced deficit (P<0.05). SB-243213A also significantly attenuated the deficit at 10 mg/kg (P<0.05). In experiment 3, buspirone attenuated the deficit with significant effects at 0.3125 mg/kg and 0.625 mg/kg (P<0.05). WAY-100635 at 0.3 and 1.0 mg/kg produced a partial attenuation of buspirone’s effect as buspirone (0.3125 mg/kg) in the presence of WAY-100635 did not significantly reverse the PCP-induced deficit. Conclusions: These studies implicate the role of 5-HT7, 5-HT2C and 5-HT1A receptors in the improvement of cognitive dysfunction of relevance to schizophrenia
