    Pattern formation in reaction diffusion models with spatially inhomogeneous diffusion coefficients

    Reaction-diffusion models for biological pattern formation have been studied extensively in a variety of embryonic and ecological contexts. However, despite experimental evidence pointing to the existence of spatial inhomogeneities in various biological systems, most models have only been considered in a spatially homogeneous environment. The authors consider a two-chemical reaction-diffusion mechanism in one space dimension in which one of the diffusion coefficients depends explicitly on the spatial variable. The model is analysed in the case of a step function diffusion coefficient and the insight gained for this special case is used to discuss pattern generation for smoothly varying diffusion coefficients. The results show that spatial inhomogeneity may be an important biological pattern regulator, and possible applications of the model to chondrogenesis in the vertebrate limb are suggested

    Midpalatal implants vs headgear for orthodontic anchorage - a randomized clinical trial: Cephalometric results

    OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effectiveness of the mid-palatal implant as a method of reinforcing anchorage during orthodontic treatment with that of conventional extra-oral anchorage. DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, clinical trial Setting: Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital NHS Trust and the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Sheffield. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 51 orthodontic patients between the ages of 12 and 39, with a class II division 1 malocclusion and ‘absolute anchorage’ requirements were randomly allocated to either receive a mid-palatal implant or headgear to reinforce orthodontic anchorage. The main outcome of the trial was to compare the mesial movement of the molars and incisors of the two treatment groups between T1 (start) and T2 (end of anchorage reinforcement) as measured from cephalometric radiographs. RESULTS: The reproducibility of the measuring technique was acceptable. There were significant differences between the T1 and T2 measurements within the implant group for the position of the maxillary central incisor (p<0.001), position of the maxillary molar (p=0.009) and position of the mandibular molar (p<0.001). There were significant differences within the headgear group for the position of the mandibular central incisor (p<0.045), position of the maxillary molar (p=<0.001) and position of the mandibular molar (p<0.001). All the skeletal and dental points moved mesially more in the headgear group during treatment than in the implant group. These ranged from an average of 0.5mm more mesial for the mandibular permanent molar to 1.5mm more mesial for the maxillary molar and mandibular base. None of the treatment changes between the implant and headgear groups were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Mid-palatal implants are an acceptable technique for reinforcing anchorage in the orthodontic patient

    Optical image of a cometary nucleus: 1980 flyby of Comet Encke

    The feasibility was investigated of obtaining optical images of a cometary nucleus via a flyby of Comet Encke. A physical model of the dust cloud surrounding the nucleus was developed by using available physical data and theoretical knowledge of cometary physics. Using this model and a Mie scattering code, calculations were made of the absolute surface brightness of the dust in the line of sight of the on-board camera and the relative surface brightness of the dust compared to the nucleus. The brightness was calculated as a function of heliocentric distance and for different phase angles (sun-comet-spacecraft angle)

    Fluorides, orthodontics and demineralization: a systematic review

    Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of fluoride in preventing white spot lesion (WSL) demineralization during orthodontic treatment and compare all modes of fluoride delivery. Data sources: The search strategy for the review was carried out according to the standard Cochrane systematic review methodology. The following databases were searched for RCTs or CCTs: Cochrane Clinical Trials Register, Cochrane Oral Health Group Specialized Trials Register, MEDLINE and EMBASE. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied when considering studies to be included. Authors of trials were contacted for further data. Data selection: The primary outcome of the review was the presence or absence of WSL by patient at the end of treatment. Secondary outcomes included any quantitative assessment of enamel mineral loss or lesion depth. Data extraction: Six reviewers independently, in duplicate, extracted data, including an assessment of the methodological quality of each trial. Data synthesis: Fifteen trials provided data for this review, although none fulfilled all the methodological quality assessment criteria. One study found that a daily NaF mouthrinse reduced the severity of demineralization surrounding an orthodontic appliance (lesion depth difference –70.0 µm; 95% CI –118.2 to –21.8 µm). One study found that use of a glass ionomer cement (GIC) for bracket bonding reduced the prevalence of WSL (Peto OR 0.35; 95% CI 0.15–0.84) compared with a composite resin. None of the studies fulfilled all of the methodological quality assessment criteria. Conclusions: There is some evidence that the use of a daily NaF mouthrinse or a GIC for bonding brackets might reduce the occurrence and severity of WSL during orthodontic treatment. More high quality, clinical research is required into the different modes of delivering fluoride to the orthodontic patient

    Driver Accelerator Design for the 10 kW Upgrade of the Jefferson Lab IR FEL

    An upgrade of the Jefferson Lab IR FEL is now under construction. It will provide 10 kW output light power in a wavelength range of 2-10 microns. The FEL will be driven by a modest-sized 80-210 MeV, 10 mA energy-recovering superconducting RF (SRF) linac. Stringent phase space requirements at the wiggler, low beam energy, and high beam current subject the design to numerous constraints. These are imposed by the need for both transverse and longitudinal phase space management, the potential impact of collective phenomena (space charge, wakefields, beam break-up (BBU), and coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR)), and interactions between the FEL and the accelerator RF system. This report addresses these issues and presents an accelerator design solution meeting the requirements imposed by physical phenomena and operational necessities.Comment: submission THC03 for LINAC200

    Stratifying derived categories of cochains on certain spaces

    In recent years, Benson, Iyengar and Krause have developed a theory of stratification for compactly generated triangulated categories with an action of a graded commutative Noetherian ring. Stratification implies a classification of localizing and thick subcategories in terms of subsets of the prime ideal spectrum of the given ring. In this paper two stratification results are presented: one for the derived category of a commutative ring-spectrum with polynomial homotopy and another for the derived category of cochains on certain spaces.
