OVII and OVIII line emission in the diffuse soft X-ray background: heliospheric and galactic contributions
We study the 0.57 keV (O VII triplet) and 0.65 keV (O VIII) diffuse emission
generated by charge transfer collisions between solar wind (SW) oxygen ions and
interstellar H and He neutral atoms in the inner Heliosphere. These lines which
dominate the 0.3-1.0 keV energy interval are also produced by hot gas in the
galactic halo (GH) and possibly the Local Interstellar Bubble (LB). We
developed a time-dependent model of the SW Charge-Exchange (SWCX) X-ray
emission, based on the localization of the SW Parker spiral at each instant. We
include input SW conditions affecting three selected fields, as well as
shadowing targets observed with XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku and calculate
X-ray emission fot O VII and O VIII lines. We determine SWCX contamination and
residual emission to attribute to the galactic soft X-ray background. We obtain
ground level intensities and/or simulated lightcurves for each target and
compare to X-ray data. The local 3/4 keV emission (O VII and O VIII) detected
in front of shadowing clouds is found to be entirely explained by the CX
heliospheric emission. No emission from the LB is needed at these energies.
Using the model predictions we subtract the heliospheric contribution to the
measured emission and derive the halo contribution. We also correct for an

This study aimed at comparing the nutritional quality of meat fatty acids (FA) of pasture-fed lambs reared organically or conventionally and offered two levels of herbage availability. Forty eight castrated male lambs of Limousine breed were used in a 2 x 2 experimental design, i.e. production system (Organic –O- vs. Conventional –C-) x level of herbage availability (High vs. Low). The O and C pastures differed in the level of on-pasture mineral N fertilization (0 vs. 100 U. ha-1. year-1) since 10 years. The level of pasture availability was managed to obtain a mean lamb age at slaughter of 5 vs. 6 months in the High and the Low level respectively. GLC analysis of fatty acids from the Longissimus thoracis muscle showed that organic farming system improved the health value of lamb meat by decreasing the level of saturated FA and especially 16:0, thus leading to a higher value of polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) to saturated FA ratio (+15%, P<0.03) and increasing the level of CLA (+18.2%, P< 0.002). The high level of herbage availability led to a better nutritional and health value of meat FA by increasing significantly deposition of n-6 PUFA (+16.3%), n-3 PUFA (+15%) and CLA (+20.2%) in LT muscle to the detriment of saturated FA (-3.4%). In conclusion, the present study confirmed the general interest of pasture-feeding on the nutritional quality of the lamb meat. It showed, for the first time, the beneficial impact of organic farming on the health value of lamb meat FA by favouring deposition of PUFA (compared to saturated FA) and CLA, this effect being reinforced by a high level of pasture availability
Electronic structure and magnetic properties of pyroxenes (Li,Na)TM(Si,Ge)2O6: novel low-dimensional magnets with 90 bonds
The results of the LSDA+U calculations for pyroxenes with diverse magnetic
properties (Li,Na)TM(Si,Ge)O, where TM is the transition metal ion
(Ti,V,Cr,Mn,Fe), are presented. We show that the anisotropic orbital ordering
results in the spin-gap formation in NaTiSiO. The detailed analysis of
different contributions to the intrachain exchange interactions for pyroxenes
is performed both analytically using perturbation theory and basing on the
results of the band structure calculations. The antiferromagnetic
exchange is found to decrease gradually in going from Ti to Fe.
It turns out to be nearly compensated by ferromagnetic interaction between
half-filled and empty orbitals in Cr-based pyroxenes. The
fine-tuning of the interaction parameters by the crystal structure results in
the ferromagnetism for NaCrGeO. Further increase of the total number of
electrons and occupation of sub-shell makes the contribution
and total exchange interaction antiferromagnetic for Mn- and Fe-based
pyroxenes. Strong oxygen polarization was found in Fe-based pyroxenes. It is
shown that this effect leads to a considerable reduction of antiferromagnetic
intrachain exchange. The obtained results may serve as a basis for the analysis
of diverse magnetic properties of pyroxenes, including those with recently
discovered multiferroic behavior.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud: The X-ray point-source catalogue
Local-Group galaxies provide access to samples of X-ray source populations of
whole galaxies. The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)
completely covers the bar and eastern wing with a 5.6 deg^2 area in the
(0.2-12.0) keV band. To characterise the X-ray sources in the SMC field, we
created a catalogue of point sources and sources with moderate extent. Sources
with high extent (>40") have been presented in a companion paper. We searched
for point sources in the EPIC images using sliding-box and maximum-likelihood
techniques and classified the sources using hardness ratios, X-ray variability,
and their multi-wavelength properties. The catalogue comprises 3053 unique
X-ray sources with a median position uncertainty of 1.3" down to a flux limit
for point sources of ~10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the (0.2-4.5) keV band,
corresponding to 5x10^33 erg s^-1 for sources in the SMC. We discuss
statistical properties, like the spatial distribution, X-ray colour diagrams,
luminosity functions, and time variability. We identified 49 SMC high-mass
X-ray binaries (HMXB), four super-soft X-ray sources (SSS), 34 foreground
stars, and 72 active galactic nuclei (AGN) behind the SMC. In addition, we
found candidates for SMC HMXBs (45) and faint SSSs (8) as well as AGN (2092)
and galaxy clusters (13). We present the most up-to-date catalogue of the X-ray
source population in the SMC field. In particular, the known population of
X-ray binaries is greatly increased. We find that the bright-end slope of the
luminosity function of Be/X-ray binaries significantly deviates from the

The warm interstellar medium around the Cygnus Loop
Observations of the oxygen lines [OII]3729 and [OIII]5007 in the medium
immediately beyond the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant were carried out with the
scanning Fabry-P\'erot spectrophotometer ESOP. Both lines were detected in
three different directions - east, northeast and southwest - and up to a
distance of 15 pc from the shock front. The ionized medium is in the immediate
vicinity of the remnant, as evinced by the smooth brightening of both lines as
the adiabatic shock transition (defined by the X-ray perimeter) is crossed.
These lines are usually brighter around the Cygnus Loop than in the general
background in directions where the galactic latitude is above 5 degrees. There
is also marginal (but significant) evidence that the degree of ionization is
somewhat larger around the Cygnus Loop. We conclude that the energy necessary
to ionize this large bubble of gas could have been supplied by an O8 or O9 type
progenitor or the particles heated by the expanding shock front. The second
possibility, though highly atractive, would have to be assessed by extensive

Comparison of the meat and carcass quality of lambs raised in organic or conventional production systems.
The ‘organic’ label on a product guarantees that synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and hormones are not used in the production process and that the use of pharmaceutical products and drugs is limited. However, product quality is often questioned and we have to anticipate the consumer demand for product quality guarantees. This study was conducted to compare the sensory and nutritional meat and carcass qualities of lambs raised under an organic (O) or a conventional (C) production system. Comparisons were made with both pasture-fed lambs and lambs that were stall-fed indoors with concentrate and hay. The experiment was conducted over two years for stall-fed lambs (S) (group O, n=24; group C, n=24) and three years for pasture-fed lambs (P) (group O, n=36; group C, n=36). For P lambs, O and C production systems differed in terms of the level of mineral N fertilisation of the pasture. For S lambs, the feed was organic vs. conventional, and the ingredients of O and C concentrates were the same. The nutritional quality of the meat (longissimus dorsi) was assessed in terms of its fatty acid (FA) composition, and the sensory quality of the loin chop was assessed by a trained sensory panel. In stall-fed lambs, the health value of meat FA for human consumption was higher in the O group than in the C group, but there was no difference in the sensory quality of the meat and the carcass between the O and C groups. In pasture-fed lambs, there were no significant differences between the O and C groups in terms of the health value of meat FA. However, in pasture-fed lambs, the loin chops had a higher level of abnormal odour of the fat in the organic than in the conventional group, probably due to a higher proportion of white clover in the diet
Panoramic Views of the Cygnus Loop
We present a complete atlas of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant in the light
of [O III] (5007), H alpha, and [S II] (6717, 6731). Despite its shell-like
appearance, the Cygnus Loop is not a current example of a Sedov-Taylor blast
wave. Rather, the optical emission traces interactions of the supernova blast
wave with clumps of gas. The surrounding interstellar medium forms the walls of
a cavity through which the blast wave now propagates, including a nearly
complete shell in which non-radiative filaments are detected. The Cygnus Loop
blast wave is not breaking out of a dense cloud, but is instead running into
confining walls. The interstellar medium dominates not only the appearance of
the Cygnus Loop but also the continued evolution of the blast wave. If this is
a typical example of a supernova remnant, then global models of the

Impacts of a power-law non-thermal electron tail on the ionization and recombination rates
We have investigated the effects of a non-thermal electron population on the
ionization and recombination rates. The considered electron distribution is
defined as a Maxwellian function below a break energy E_b and as a power-law
function of index alpha above this energy. We have calculated the collisional
(direct and excitation autoionization) ionization coefficient rates as well as
the (radiative and dielectronic) recombination rates. Practical methods are
given to calculate these rates in order to be easily included in a computer
code. The ionization rates are very sensitive to the non-thermal electron
population and can be increased by several orders of magnitude depending on the
temperature and parameters of the power-law function (E_b and alpha). The
non-thermal electrons have a much weaker effect on the (radiative and
dielectronic) recombination rates. We have determined the mean electric charge
of elements C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe and Ni for different values of
the break energy and power-law index. The ionization balance is affected
significantly, whereas the effect is smaller in ionizing plasmas.Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Distribution and Kinematics of O VI in the Galactic Halo
FUSE spectra of 100 extragalactic objects are analyzed to obtain measures of
O VI absorption along paths through the Milky Way thick disk/halo. Strong O VI
absorption over the approximate velocity range from -100 to 100 km/s reveals a
widespread but highly irregular distribution of thick disk O VI, implying the
existence of substantial amounts of hot gas with T ~ 3x10^5 K in the Milky Way
halo. Large irregularities in the distribution of the absorbing gas are found
to be similar over angular scales extending from less than one to 180 degrees,
indicating a considerable amount of small and large scale structure in the gas.
The overall distribution of Galactic O VI is not well described by a
symmetrical plane-parallel layer of patchy O VI absorption. The simplest
departure from such a model that provides a reasonable fit to the observations
is a plane-parallel patchy absorbing layer with a scale height of 2.3 kpc, and
a 0.25 dex excess of O VI in the northern Galactic polar region. The O VI
absorption has a Doppler parameter b = 30 to 99 km/s, with an average value of
60 km/s . Thermal broadening alone cannot explain the large observed profile
widths. The average O VI absorption velocities toward high latitude objects
range from -46 to 82 km/s, with a sample average of 0 km/s and a standard
deviation of 21 km/s. O VI associated with the thick disk moves both toward and
away from the plane with roughly equal frequency. A combination of models
involving the radiative cooling of hot fountain gas, the cooling of supernova
bubbles in the halo, and the turbulent mixing of warm and hot halo gases is
required to explain the presence of O VI and other highly ionized atoms found
