Lossless Tapers, Gaussian Beams, Free-Space Modes: Standing Waves Versus Through-Flowing Waves
It was noticed in the past that, to avoid physical inconsistencies, in
Marcatili's lossless tapers through-flowing waves must be drastically different
from standing waves. First, we reconfirm this by means of numerical results
based on an extended BPM algorithm. Next, we show that this apparently
surprising behavior is a straightforward fallout of Maxwell's equations. Very
similar remarks apply to Gaussian beams in a homogeneous medium. As a
consequence, Gaussian beams are shown to carry reactive powers, and their
active power distributions depart slightly from their standard pictures.
Similar conclusions hold for free-space modes expressed in terms of Bessel

Humanization through Action Research as Methodology
The purpose of this action research study was to critically examine the use of action research as a mechanism to enhance graduate students’ development as emerging qualitative researchers. Although action research has been recognized as an effective means of transforming teaching practices, studies examining its use among graduate students learning to become qualitative researchers are lacking. Participants profiled in this study include two graduate students and one teacher educator. The context of the study was a graduate level course on action research where all three participants identified starting points, employed distinct action strategies, engaged in sustained, critical reflection, and developed metaphors representing their living educational theories of their practice. Results from this study indicate that each participant gained a deeper self-awareness and understanding of enacting qualitative research and furthermore, recognized action research as a powerful humanizing agent
Transepithelial Corneal Cross-Linking With Vitamin E-Enhanced Riboflavin Solution and Abbreviated, Low-Dose UV-A: 24-Month Clinical Outcomes
Purpose: To report the clinical outcomes with 24-month follow-up of transepithelial cross-linking using a combination of a D-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene-glycol 1000 succinate (vitamin E-TPGS)-enhanced riboflavin solution and abbreviated low fluence UV-A treatment.
Methods: In a nonrandomized clinical trial, 25 corneas of 19 patients with topographically proven, progressive, mild to moderate keratoconus over the previous 6 months were cross-linked, and all patients were examined at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. The treatments were performed using a patented solution of riboflavin and vitamin E-TPGS, topically applied for 15 minutes, followed by two 5-minute UV-A treatments with separate doses both at fluence below 3 mW/cm2 that were based on preoperative central pachymetry.
Results: During the 6-month pretreatment observation, the average Kmax increased by +1.99 +/- 0.29 D (diopter). Postoperatively, the average Kmax decreased, changing by -0.55 +/- 0.94 D, by -0.88 +/- 1.02 D and by -1.01 +/- 1.22 D at 6, 12, and 24 months. Postoperatively, Kmax decreased in 19, 20, and 20 of the 25 eyes at 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months, respectively. Refractive cylinder was decreased by 3 months postoperatively and afterward, changing by -1.35 +/- 0.69 D at 24 months. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) improved at 6, 12, and 24 months, including an improvement of -0.19 +/- 0.13 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution units at 24 months. There was no reduction in endothelial cell count. No corneal abrasions occurred, and no bandage contact lenses or prescription analgesics were used during postoperative recovery.
Conclusions: Transepithelial cross-linking using the riboflavin-vitamin E solution and brief, low-dose, pachymetry-dependent UV-A treatment safely stopped keratoconus progression

We then exploit the electro-optic response of a bipolar nematic liquid crystal to demonstrate tuning of an optical antenna using a low frequency external electric field as the control mechanism
Luminosity- and morphology-dependent clustering of galaxies
How does the clustering of galaxies depend on their inner properties like
morphological type and luminosity? We address this question in the mathematical
framework of marked point processes and clarify the notion of luminosity and
morphological segregation. A number of test quantities such as conditional
mark-weighted two-point correlation functions are introduced. These descriptors
allow for a scale-dependent analysis of luminosity and morphology segregation.
Moreover, they break the degeneracy between an inhomogeneous fractal point set
and actual present luminosity segregation. Using the Southern Sky Redshift
Survey~2 (da Costa et al. 1998, SSRS2) we find both luminosity and
morphological segregation at a high level of significance, confirming claims by
previous works using these data (Benoist et al. 1996, Willmer et al. 1998).
Specifically, the average luminosity and the fluctuations in the luminosity of
pairs of galaxies are enhanced out to separations of 15Mpc/h. On scales smaller
than 3Mpc/h the luminosities on galaxy pairs show a tight correlation. A
comparison with the random-field model indicates that galaxy luminosities
depend on the spatial distribution and galaxy-galaxy interactions. Early-type
galaxies are also more strongly correlated, indicating morphological
segregation. The galaxies in the PSCz catalog (Saunders et al. 2000) do not
show significant luminosity segregation. This again illustrates that mainly
early-type galaxies contribute to luminosity segregation. However, based on
several independent investigations we show that the observed luminosity

Reputation versus reality: the impact of US News and World Report rankings and education branding on hiring decisions in the job market
Typically, leading brands provide benchmarks for constructing consumer preference in the marketplace. Reputation rankings have sustained and advanced the status of brand names in higher education with an implication that the degrees awarded by higher ranked schools have added prestige, a cachet with the potential of facilitating success in the job market. This implication makes reputation rankings a dependable tool for college and university marketing departments eager to increase student enrollment and retention by communicating its superiority among its peers. By examining the influence of reputation rankings on the pre-decision preferences of human resource hiring professionals in evaluating employment applicants, this study found that there is little if any relationship between a degree from a higher education institution in the top tier of a reputation ranking and employment acquisition. Work experience emerged as the major deciding factor in the assessment of an applicant\u27s qualifications. Degree field and employee referral appeared as important matters, while education program and academic record followed in playing a slightly diminished role. Academic record and non academic activities had a lesser degree of influence on hiring decisions. Future study into the subconscious and conscious effect of reputation rankings on the job attainment goal of a college student in relation to the student\u27s choice of HEI could provide new insights into student choice, college marketing strategy, and the value of rankings in education
Mark correlations: relating physical properties to spatial distributions
Mark correlations provide a systematic approach to look at objects both
distributed in space and bearing intrinsic information, for instance on
physical properties. The interplay of the objects' properties (marks) with the
spatial clustering is of vivid interest for many applications; are, e.g.,
galaxies with high luminosities more strongly clustered than dim ones? Do
neighbored pores in a sandstone have similar sizes? How does the shape of
impact craters on a planet depend on the geological surface properties? In this
article, we give an introduction into the appropriate mathematical framework to
deal with such questions, i.e. the theory of marked point processes. After
having clarified the notion of segregation effects, we define universal test
quantities applicable to realizations of a marked point processes. We show
their power using concrete data sets in analyzing the luminosity-dependence of
the galaxy clustering, the alignment of dark matter halos in gravitational
-body simulations, the morphology- and diameter-dependence of the Martian
crater distribution and the size correlations of pores in sandstone. In order
to understand our data in more detail, we discuss the Boolean depletion model,
the random field model and the Cox random field model. The first model
describes depletion effects in the distribution of Martian craters and pores in
sandstone, whereas the last one accounts at least qualitatively for the

Circumstellar discs: What will be next?
This prospective chapter gives our view on the evolution of the study of
circumstellar discs within the next 20 years from both observational and
theoretical sides. We first present the expected improvements in our knowledge
of protoplanetary discs as for their masses, sizes, chemistry, the presence of
planets as well as the evolutionary processes shaping these discs. We then
explore the older debris disc stage and explain what will be learnt concerning
their birth, the intrinsic links between these discs and planets, the hot dust
and the gas detected around main sequence stars as well as discs around white

Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity
variations are presented for the eighth set of ten close binary systems: AB
And, V402 Aur, V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, BX Dra, V918 Her, V502 Oph, V1363 Ori, KP
Peg, V335 Peg. Half of the systems (V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, V918 Her, V1363 Ori,
V335 Peg) were discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission and all
systems are double-lined (SB2) contact binaries. The broadening function method
permitted improvement of the orbital elements for AB And and V502 Oph. The
other systems have been observed for radial velocity variations for the first
time; in this group are five bright (V<7.5) binaries: V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, V918
Her, KP Peg and V335 Peg. Several of the studied systems are prime candidates
