    Effet d'une carence en chlore sur la germination, la croissance et la photosynthèse du cocotier

    L'effet bénéfique d'une bonne nutrition en chlore pour la croissance et la productivité du cocotier a déjà été démontré. Il était intéressant d'essayer de comprendre le mécanisme physiologique de l'effet du chlore. En raison de l'encombrement du cocotier adulte, les essais ont porté sur des plants élevés en serre à Montpellier et soumis ensuite à des mesures à Cadarache portant sur différents caractères. Ces plants provenaient de noix récoltées sur arbres carencés en chlore et bien alimentés. L'effet chlore est peu visible, soit parce que dans le jeune âge le plant vit sur les réserves de la noix, soit pour des raisons de mauvais développement végétatif dû aux difficiles conditions d'élevage en serre. Cette étude a cependant montré que le cocotier comme le palmier à huile présente toutes les caractéristiques d'une plante en C3 avec une vitesse de la photosynthèse nette faible, un point de compensation pour le CO2 élevé, une nette sensibilité de la photorespiration à la concentration en O2, une photorespiration 3 à 4 fois plus grande que la respiration à l'obscurité.     Direct observation of the band gap transition in atomically thin ReS2_2

    ReS2_2 is considered as a promising candidate for novel electronic and sensor applications. The low crystal symmetry of the van der Waals compound ReS2_2 leads to a highly anisotropic optical, vibrational, and transport behavior. However, the details of the electronic band structure of this fascinating material are still largely unexplored. We present a momentum-resolved study of the electronic structure of monolayer, bilayer, and bulk ReS2_2 using k-space photoemission microscopy in combination with first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that the valence electrons in bulk ReS2_2 are - contrary to assumptions in recent literature - significantly delocalized across the van der Waals gap. Furthermore, we directly observe the evolution of the valence band dispersion as a function of the number of layers, revealing a significantly increased effective electron mass in single-layer crystals. We also find that only bilayer ReS2_2 has a direct band gap. Our results establish bilayer ReS2_2 as a advantageous building block for two-dimensional devices and van der Waals heterostructures

    Performance Verification of the FlashCam Prototype Camera for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a future gamma-ray observatory that is planned to significantly improve upon the sensitivity and precision of the current generation of Cherenkov telescopes. The observatory will consist of several dozens of telescopes with different sizes and equipped with different types of cameras. Of these, the FlashCam camera system is the first to implement a fully digital signal processing chain which allows for a traceable, configurable trigger scheme and flexible signal reconstruction. As of autumn 2016, a prototype FlashCam camera for the medium-sized telescopes of CTA nears completion. First results of the ongoing system tests demonstrate that the signal chain and the readout system surpass CTA requirements.     Underground railroads: citizen entitlements and unauthorized mobility in the antebellum period and today

    In recent years, some scholars and prominent political figures have advocated the deepening of North American integration on roughly the European Union model, including the creation of new political institutions and the free movement of workers across borders. The construction of such a North American Union, if it included even a very thin trans-state citizenship regime, could represent the most significant expansion of individual entitlements in the region since citizenship was extended to former slaves in the United States. With such a possibility as its starting point, this article explores some striking parallels between the mass, legally prohibited movement across boundaries by fugitive slaves in the pre-Civil War period, and that by current unauthorized migrants to the United States. Both were, or are, met on their journeys by historically parallel groups of would-be helpers and hinderers. Their unauthorized movements in both periods serve as important signals of incomplete entitlements or institutional protections. Most crucially, moral arguments for extending fuller entitlements to both groups are shown here to be less distinct than may be prima facie evident, reinforcing the case for expanding and deepening the regional membership regime

    We report on the observation of photogalvanic effects in epitaxially grown Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3 three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TI). We show that asymmetric scattering of Dirac fermions driven back and forth by the terahertz electric field results in a dc electric current. Because of the “symmetry filtration” the dc current is generated by the surface electrons only and provides an optoelectronic access to probe the electron transport in TI, surface domains orientation, and details of electron scattering in 3D TI even at room temperature

    Detection of variable VHE gamma-ray emission from the extra-galactic gamma-ray binary LMC P3

    Context. Recently, the high-energy (HE, 0.1-100 GeV) γ\gamma-ray emission from the object LMC P3 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been discovered to be modulated with a 10.3-day period, making it the first extra-galactic γ\gamma-ray binary. Aims. This work aims at the detection of very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) γ\gamma-ray emission and the search for modulation of the VHE signal with the orbital period of the binary system. Methods. LMC P3 has been observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.); the acceptance-corrected exposure time is 100 h. The data set has been folded with the known orbital period of the system in order to test for variability of the emission. Energy spectra are obtained for the orbit-averaged data set, and for the orbital phase bin around the VHE maximum. Results. VHE γ\gamma-ray emission is detected with a statistical significance of 6.4 σ\sigma. The data clearly show variability which is phase-locked to the orbital period of the system. Periodicity cannot be deduced from the H.E.S.S. data set alone. The orbit-averaged luminosity in the 1101-10 TeV energy range is (1.4±0.2)×1035(1.4 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{35} erg/s. A luminosity of (5±1)×1035(5 \pm 1) \times 10^{35} erg/s is reached during 20% of the orbit. HE and VHE γ\gamma-ray emissions are anti-correlated.     Characterizing the gamma-ray long-term variability of PKS 2155-304 with H.E.S.S. and Fermi-LAT

    Studying the temporal variability of BL Lac objects at the highest energies provides unique insights into the extreme physical processes occurring in relativistic jets and in the vicinity of super-massive black holes. To this end, the long-term variability of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 is analyzed in the high (HE, 100 MeV 200 GeV) gamma-ray domain. Over the course of ~9 yr of H.E.S.S observations the VHE light curve in the quiescent state is consistent with a log-normal behavior. The VHE variability in this state is well described by flicker noise (power-spectral-density index {\ss}_VHE = 1.10 +0.10 -0.13) on time scales larger than one day. An analysis of 5.5 yr of HE Fermi LAT data gives consistent results ({\ss}_HE = 1.20 +0.21 -0.23, on time scales larger than 10 days) compatible with the VHE findings. The HE and VHE power spectral densities show a scale invariance across the probed time ranges. A direct linear correlation between the VHE and HE fluxes could neither be excluded nor firmly established. These long-term-variability properties are discussed and compared to the red noise behavior ({\ss} ~ 2) seen on shorter time scales during VHE-flaring states. The difference in power spectral noise behavior at VHE energies during quiescent and flaring states provides evidence that these states are influenced by different physical processes, while the compatibility of the HE and VHE long-term results is suggestive of a common physical link as it might be introduced by an underlying jet-disk connection.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figure

    Supine MRI for regional breast radiotherapy: Imaging axillary lymph nodes before and after sentinel-node biopsy

    Regional radiotherapy (RT) is increasingly used in breast cancer treatment. Conventionally, computed tomography (CT) is performed for RT planning. Lymph node (LN) target levels are delineated according to anatomical boundaries. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could enable individual LN delineation. The purpose was to evaluate the applicability of MRI for LN detection in supine treatment position, before and after sentinel-node biopsy (SNB). Twenty-three female breast cancer patients (cTis-3N0M0) underwent 1.5 T MRI, before and after SNB, in addition to CT. Endurance for MRI was monitored. Axillary levels were delineated. LNs were identified and delineated on MRI from before and after SNB, and on CT, and compared by Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. LN locations and LN-based volumes were related to axillary delineations and associated volumes. Although postoperative effects were visible, LN numbers on postoperative MRI (median 26 LNs) were highly reproducible compared to preoperative MRI when adding excised sentinel nodes, and higher than on CT (median 11, p < 0.001). LN-based volumes were considerably smaller than respective axillary levels. Supine MRI of LNs is feasible and reproducible before and after SNB. This may lead to more accurate RT target definition compared to CT, with potentially lower toxicity. With the MRI techniques described here, initiation of novel MRI-guided RT strategies aiming at individual LNs could be possible

    Evaluating Impacts of Five Years of Beginning Farmer Webinar Training

    The Michigan State University Extension Beginning Farmer Webinar Series has been implemented statewide since 2012. For the period 2012–2016, 63 webinars were provided to 607 participants. Regular evaluation efforts capture impact data from participants 6 to 10 months after they complete the series. However, to determine longer range impacts of the program, we developed a follow-up online evaluation and distributed it via email invitation to 2012–2016 participants for whom contact information was available. The evaluation results indicate an encouraging level of impact with regard to knowledge retained, farm practices changed, and positive economic metrics such as new farm start-ups and new jobs
