Numerical evaluation of NLO multiparton processes
We discuss an algorithm for the numerical evaluation of NLO multiparton
processes. We focus hereby on the virtual part of the NLO calculation, i.e. on
evaluating the one-loop integration numerically. We employ and extend the ideas
of the subtraction method to the virtual part and we use subtraction terms for
the soft, collinear and ultraviolet regions, which allows us to evaluate the
loop integral numerically in four dimensions. A second ingredient is a method
to deform the integration contour of the loop integration into the complex
plane. The algorithm is derived on the level of the primitive amplitudes, where
we utilise recursive relations to generate the corresponding one-loop off-shell
currents. We discuss the numerical behavior of the approach and the application
to the leading colour contribution in e+ e- --> n jets, with n up to seven.Comment: 10 pages, talk given at Loops and Legs 201
The influence of defects of the fatigue resistance of butt and girth welds in A106B steel
This three-phase study was directed at developing a fitness for service defect acceptance criteria for welds with defect indications. The study focussed on A106 Gr. B steel pipe. The first phase involved a literature search and critical review to develop the preliminary acceptance criteria to the extent permitted by the data. The second phase developed data for flat plate, wall segment, and vessel specimens containing artificial or natural planar or volumetric defects. The final phase developed acceptance criteria from the test data
Approach to a rational rotation number in a piecewise isometric system
We study a parametric family of piecewise rotations of the torus, in the
limit in which the rotation number approaches the rational value 1/4. There is
a region of positive measure where the discontinuity set becomes dense in the
limit; we prove that in this region the area occupied by stable periodic orbits
remains positive. The main device is the construction of an induced map on a
domain with vanishing measure; this map is the product of two involutions, and
each involution preserves all its atoms. Dynamically, the composition of these
involutions represents linking together two sector maps; this dynamical system
features an orderly array of stable periodic orbits having a smooth parameter
dependence, plus irregular contributions which become negligible in the limit.Comment: LaTeX, 57 pages with 13 figure
Structural features in the Colorado Plateau margin near Flagstaff, Arizona
The author has identified the following significant results. On ERTS-1 frame 1014-17375, a set of northwest-trending lineaments has been discovered which converge on the north-trending lineament of the Oak Creek Fault near Flagstaff, Arizona. The lineaments are most easily seen in band 7. The region of convergence may mark an area structurally favorable for the location of water in Paleozoic sediments that underlie the basalt cap
Geologic applications of ERTS images on the Colorado Plateau, Arizona
Three areas in central and northern Arizona centered on the (1) Verde Valley, (2) Coconino Plateau, and (3) Shivwits Plateau were studied using ERTS photography. Useful applications results include: (1) upgrading of the existing state geologic map of the Verde Valley region; (2) detection of long NW trending lineaments in the basalt cap SE of Flagstaff which may be favorable locations for drilling for new water supplies; (3) tracing of the Bright Angel and Butte faults to twice their previously known length and correlating the extensions with modern seismic events, showing these faults to be present-day earthquake hazards; (4) discovering and successfully drilling perched sandstone aquifers in the Kaibab Limestone on the Coconino Plateau; and (5) determining the relationship between the Shivwits lavas and the formation of the lower Grand Canyon and showing that the lavas should be an excellent aquifer, as yet untapped
Channels Ran Through It—The Lawrence Formation at Lone Star Lake, Douglas County, Kansas
The upper part of the Ireland Sandstone Member of the Lawrence Formation exposed in the spillway of Lone Star Lake, southwest of Lawrence, Kansas, consists of abundant pinstripe-bedded shales and siltstones; thin, lenticular sandstone and siltstone beds; and meter-scale, channel-form sandstone and mudstone lenses. Soft-sediment-deformation structures, including load casts, ball-and-pillow, and pseudonodules are abundant. The lenticular and pinstripe bedding with bipolar paleocurrents suggests tide-influenced deposition. The crosscutting, channel-form deposits are interpreted as tidal channels in an environment with low energy but rapid sedimentation. The depositional environment was a tide-dominated, muddy upper estuary cut by tidal channels. Gravitational instabilities resulting from rapid deposition of sand over saturated mud produced inverse-density gradients that resulted in soft-sediment deformation
Evaluation of the Sustainability of an Intervention to Increase HIV Testing
BACKGROUND
Sustainability—the routinization and institutionalization of processes that improve the quality of healthcare—is difficult to achieve and not often studied.
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the sustainability of increased rates of HIV testing after implementation of a multi-component intervention in two Veterans Health Administration healthcare systems.
DESIGN
Quasi-experimental implementation study in which the effect of transferring responsibility to conduct the provider education component of the intervention from research to operational staff was assessed.
PATIENTS
Persons receiving healthcare between 2005 and 2006 (intervention year) and 2006 and 2007 (sustainability year).
MEASUREMENTS
Monthly HIV testing rate, stratified by frequency of clinic visits
RESULTS
The monthly adjusted testing rate increased from 2% at baseline to 6% at the end intervention year and then declined reaching 4% at the end of the sustainability year. However, the stratified, visit-specific testing rate for persons newly exposed to the intervention (i.e., having their first through third visits during the study period) increased throughout the intervention and sustainability years. Increases in the proportion of visits by patients who remained untested despite multiple, prior exposures to the intervention accounted for the aggregate attenuation of testing during the sustainability year. Overall, the percentage of patients who received an HIV test in the sustainability year was 11.6%, in the intervention year 11.1%, and in the pre-intervention year 5.0%
CONCLUSIONS
Provider education combined with informatics and organizational support had a sustainable effect on HIV testing rates. The effect was most pronounced during patients' early contacts with the healthcare system.Health Services Research & Development Service (SDP 06–001
