    Numerical modelling of the debonding between CFRP strips and concrete in shear tests under static loads using different approaches

    The present paper deals with the finite element (FE) analysis of bond slip between concrete and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips in a single pull-out test under static loads. The commercial software LS-DYNA is used to simulate the test set-up using a plastic damage material model and an elastic material model for the concrete prism and the unidirectional CFRP strip, respectively. The bond interface between the concrete and the CFRP strip is simulated following three different approaches using a perfect bond model, a cohesive bond model and contact algorithms based on recently developed proposed bond slip models. The numerical model is validated based on experimental test results available from literature. The debonding failure mode and the delamination loads of the CFRP strip are predicted. The numerical results show a good agreement with the experimental data using the cohesive bond model. The perfect bond model gives an overestimation of the delamination loads and of the damage distribution in the concrete prism

    Measuring and modelling the energy cost of reconfiguration in sensor networks [forthcoming]

    As Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) must operate for long periods on a limited power budget, estimating the energy cost of software operations is critical. Contemporary reconfiguration approaches for WSN allow for software evolution at various granularities; from reflashing of a complete software image, through replacement of complete applications, to the reconfiguration of individual software components. This paper contributes a generic model for measuring and modelling the energy cost of reconfiguration in WSN. We validate that this model is accurate in the face of different hardware platforms, software stacks and software encapsulation approaches. We have embedded this model in the LooCI middleware, resulting in the first energy aware reconfigurable component model for sensor networks. We evaluate our approach using two real-world WSN applications and demonstrate that our model predicts the energy cost of reconfiguration with 93% accuracy. Using this model we demonstrate that selecting the most appropriate software modularisation approach is key to minimising energy consumption

    Revisiting susceptibility testing in MDR-TB by a standardized quantitative phenotypic assessment in a European multicentre study

    Objectives Treatment outcome of MDR-TB is critically dependent on the proper use of second-line drugs as per the result of in vitro drug susceptibility testing (DST). We aimed to establish a standardized DST procedure based on quantitative determination of drug resistance and compared the results with those of genotypes associated with drug resistance. Methods The protocol, based on MGIT 960 and the TB eXiST software, was evaluated in nine European reference laboratories. Resistance detection at a screening drug concentration was followed by determination of resistance levels and estimation of the resistance proportion. Mutations in 14 gene regions were investigated using established techniques. Results A total of 139 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from patients with MDR-TB and resistance beyond MDR-TB were tested for 13 antituberculous drugs: isoniazid, rifampicin, rifabutin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, streptomycin, para-aminosalicylic acid, ethionamide, amikacin, capreomycin, ofloxacin, moxifloxacin and linezolid. Concordance between phenotypic and genotypic resistance was >80%, except for ethambutol. Time to results was short (median 10 days). High-level resistance, which precludes the therapeutic use of an antituberculous drug, was observed in 49% of the isolates. The finding of a low or intermediate resistance level in 16% and 35% of the isolates, respectively, may help in designing an efficient personalized regimen for the treatment of MDR-TB patients. Conclusions The automated DST procedure permits accurate and rapid quantitative resistance profiling of first- and second-line antituberculous drugs.     We present a new approximation scheme for the centrifugal term to obtain a quasi-exact analytical bound state solutions within the framework of the position-dependent effective mass radial Klein-Gordon equation with the scalar and vector Hulth\'{e}n potentials in any arbitrary DD dimension and orbital angular momentum quantum numbers l.l. The Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method is used in the calculations. The relativistic real energy levels and corresponding eigenfunctions for the bound states with different screening parameters have been given in a closed form. It is found that the solutions in the case of constant mass and in the case of s-wave (l=0l=0) are identical with the ones obtained in literature.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur

    Solution of the relativistic Dirac-Hulthen problem

    The one-particle three-dimensional Dirac equation with spherical symmetry is solved for the Hulthen potential. The s-wave relativistic energy spectrum and two-component spinor wavefunctions are obtained analytically. Conforming to the standard feature of the relativistic problem, the solution space splits into two distinct subspaces depending on the sign of a fundamental parameter in the problem. Unique and interesting properties of the energy spectrum are pointed out and illustrated graphically for several values of the physical parameters. The square integrable two-component wavefunctions are written in terms of the Jacobi polynomials. The nonrelativistic limit reproduces the well-known nonrelativistic energy spectrum and results in Schrodinger equation with a "generalized" three-parameter Hulthen potential, which is the sum of the original Hulthen potential and its square.Comment: 13 pages, 3 color figure

    Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA)

    The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) is a staged experiment to measure 21 cm emission from the primordial intergalactic medium (IGM) throughout cosmic reionization (z=612z=6-12), and to explore earlier epochs of our Cosmic Dawn (z30z\sim30). During these epochs, early stars and black holes heated and ionized the IGM, introducing fluctuations in 21 cm emission. HERA is designed to characterize the evolution of the 21 cm power spectrum to constrain the timing and morphology of reionization, the properties of the first galaxies, the evolution of large-scale structure, and the early sources of heating. The full HERA instrument will be a 350-element interferometer in South Africa consisting of 14-m parabolic dishes observing from 50 to 250 MHz. Currently, 19 dishes have been deployed on site and the next 18 are under construction. HERA has been designated as an SKA Precursor instrument. In this paper, we summarize HERA's scientific context and provide forecasts for its key science results. After reviewing the current state of the art in foreground mitigation, we use the delay-spectrum technique to motivate high-level performance requirements for the HERA instrument. Next, we present the HERA instrument design, along with the subsystem specifications that ensure that HERA meets its performance requirements. Finally, we summarize the schedule and status of the project. We conclude by suggesting that, given the realities of foreground contamination, current-generation 21 cm instruments are approaching their sensitivity limits. HERA is designed to bring both the sensitivity and the precision to deliver its primary science on the basis of proven foreground filtering techniques, while developing new subtraction techniques to unlock new capabilities. The result will be a major step toward realizing the widely recognized scientific potential of 21 cm cosmology.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures, 2 table

    Intestinal parasitic infections in schoolchildren in different settings of Côte d'Ivoire : effect of diagnostic approach and implications for control

    BACKGROUND: Social-ecological systems govern parasitic infections in humans. Within the frame of assessing the accuracy of a rapid diagnostic test for Schistosoma mansoni in Cote d'Ivoire, three different endemicity settings had to be identified and schoolchildren's intestinal parasitic infection profiles were characterized. METHODS: In September 2010, a rapid screening was conducted in 11 schools in the Azaguie district, south Cote d'Ivoire. In each school, 25 children were examined for S. mansoni and S. haematobium. Based on predefined schistosome endemicity levels, three settings were selected, where schoolchildren aged 8-12 years were asked to provide three stool and three urine samples for an in-depth appraisal of parasitic infections. Triplicate Kato-Katz thick smears were prepared from each stool sample for S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminth diagnosis, whereas urine samples were subjected to a filtration method for S. haematobium diagnosis. Additionally, a formol-ether concentration method was employed on one stool sample for the diagnosis of helminths and intestinal protozoa. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to analyse associations between schoolchildren's parasitic infections, age, sex and study setting. RESULTS: The prevalences of S. mansoni and S. haematobium infections in the initial screening ranged from nil to 88% and from nil to 56%, respectively. The rapid screening in the three selected areas revealed prevalences of S. mansoni of 16%, 33% and 78%. Based on a more rigorous diagnostic approach, the respective prevalences increased to 92%, 53% and 33%. S. haematobium prevalences were 0.8%, 4% and 65%. Prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma spp., soil-transmitted helminths and intestinal protozoan infections showed setting-specific patterns. Infections with two or more species concurrently were most common in the rural setting (84%), followed by the peri-urban (28.3%) and urban setting (18.2%). CONCLUSIONS: More sensitive diagnostic tools or rigorous sampling approaches are needed to select endemicity settings with high fidelity.     Cet article est une synthèse des recherches récentes en matière d’asymétrie d’informations sur les marchés financiers. L’impact de différentes hypothèses sur l’existence et l’efficience informationnelle des équilibres est étudié. Le cas de la concurrence parfaite est d’abord analysé (Grossman et Stiglitz, 1980). Puis la concurrence imparfaite est analysée. On distingue deux cas, selon que le bruit qui empêche le prix d’être parfaitement révélateur provient d’une offre exogène (KyIe, 1985, 1989), ou d’une dotation aléatoire des agents informés (Glosten, 1989; Bhattacharya et Spiegel, 1990; Bossaerts et Hughson, 1991). Dans le premier cas, l’équilibre existe toujours. Dans le second cas, il n’existe que si le bruit est assez élevé ou si le support de sa distribution est borné.The impact of different hypotheses on the existence and informativeness of rational expectations equilibria is analyzed within a simple synthetic model.     Tissue-Informative Mechanism for Wearable Non-invasive Continuous Blood Pressure Monitoring

    Accurate continuous direct measurement of the blood pressure is currently available thru direct invasive methods via intravascular needles, and is mostly limited to use during surgical procedures or in the intensive care unit (ICU). Non-invasive methods that are mostly based on auscultation or cuff oscillometric principles do provide relatively accurate measurement of blood pressure. However, they mostly involve physical inconveniences such as pressure or stress on the human body. Here, we introduce a new non-invasive mechanism of tissue-informative measurement, where an experimental phenomenon called subcutaneous tissue pressure equilibrium is revealed and related for application in detection of absolute blood pressure. A prototype was experimentally verified to provide an absolute blood pressure measurement by wearing a watch-type measurement module that does not cause any discomfort. This work is supposed to contribute remarkably to the advancement of continuous non-invasive mobile devices for 24-7 daily-life ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring.open
