    Neuroanatomical Correlates of Fluid Intelligence in Healthy Adults and Persons with Vascular Risk Factors

    The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of regional brain changes on cognitive decline and the modifying influence of vascular risk (VR) factors. We present latent difference score analyses of associations among 5-year changes in 12 regional brain volumes and age-sensitive cognitive functions in 87 adults (32 with identifiable VR factors). We found reliable individual differences in volume change for 11 of the 12 brain regions but not in the cognitive measures that showed average longitudinal decline. Thus, associations between rates of change in fluid intelligence and brain volumes could not be assessed. We observed, however, that lower levels of fluid intelligence were associated with smaller prefrontal and hippocampal volumes. Lower fluid intelligence scores were also linked to greater longitudinal shrinkage of the entorhinal cortex (EC). After accounting for the effects of age, sex, and VR factors, the orbitofrontal cortex and the prefrontal white matter (PFw) volumes as well as the 5-year change in the EC volume predicted fluid intelligence level. VR was independently associated with smaller prefrontal volumes and lower fluid intelligence.     N° ISBN - 978-2-7380-1284-5International audienceA survey carried out in four regions of Benin with different climatic profiles have shown producers' perceptions on climatic changes, their consequences and the different adapted measures taken by producers in order to deal with such consequences. Methodologies used comprise group discussions as well as individual interviews with open-ended, semi open and open questionnaires. The present paper is based on research results from 110 family farms of two villages in the northern region. Climate is Sudanese and the production system is cotton based. Recent climate trends perceived by producers are: irregular rainfalls, shortening of cultivation season, occurrence of violent winds and a increase of temperatures. Conventional analyses of climate series highlight significant increases of maxima and minima temperatures, although fail to show significant increases in violent winds as well as significant differences in rainfall distributions. Adaptive measures put to use by producers are many, but scarcely compensate negative effects of climate changes. Farms with little production means remain vulnerable. The study of producers' perceptions of climate changes traduces the need for a new approach in the analysis of climatic variables based on micro spatial and temporal scales

    Microbiome profiling by Illumina sequencing of combinatorial sequence-tagged PCR products

    We developed a low-cost, high-throughput microbiome profiling method that uses combinatorial sequence tags attached to PCR primers that amplify the rRNA V6 region. Amplified PCR products are sequenced using an Illumina paired-end protocol to generate millions of overlapping reads. Combinatorial sequence tagging can be used to examine hundreds of samples with far fewer primers than is required when sequence tags are incorporated at only a single end. The number of reads generated permitted saturating or near-saturating analysis of samples of the vaginal microbiome. The large number of reads al- lowed an in-depth analysis of errors, and we found that PCR-induced errors composed the vast majority of non-organism derived species variants, an ob- servation that has significant implications for sequence clustering of similar high-throughput data. We show that the short reads are sufficient to assign organisms to the genus or species level in most cases. We suggest that this method will be useful for the deep sequencing of any short nucleotide region that is taxonomically informative; these include the V3, V5 regions of the bac- terial 16S rRNA genes and the eukaryotic V9 region that is gaining popularity for sampling protist diversity.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure

    Combining mechanical and thermal surface fourier transform analysis to follow the dynamic fatigue behavior of polymers

    This work investigates the phenomena of self-heating, also called intrinsic heating, and thermoelastic coupling during non-linear dynamic mechanical fatigue testing via surface temperature measurement coupled with the mechanical behavior of polymers. Static tensile tests and dynamic strain controlled fatigue tests under tension/tension were performed at a frequency of ω1_{1}/2π = 5 Hz, as well as in the low cycle fatigue regime at ω1_{1}/2π = 0.2 Hz, on six polymers: high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polyamide 6 (PA6), and two grades of polypropylene (PP). In dynamic testing, the surface temperature rises to a plateau value (ΔT) when an equilibrium between the viscous/plastic dissipated energy and heat convection is reached. Power-law correlations were found between the strain amplitude (ε0_{0}) and ΔT, as well as between ε0_{0} and the calculated dissipated energy density (Wdiss,p_{diss,p}) obtained from the mechanical stress response, with similar exponents for both correlations. Thermoelastic coupling is firstly investigated in uniaxial tension, revealing a linear relation between the strain rate and the rate of temperature decrease, which is more distinct with decreasing polymer chain mobility. In dynamic fatigue testing, the surface temperature was found to oscillate with an amplitude T1_{1}, which was analyzed via Fourier transform. A direct relation between T1_{1} and ε0_{0} at small deformations was observed. At large strain amplitudes, T1_{1}0_{0}) follows a similar trend as the complex modulus E*(ε0_{0}). At low frequencies and large strain amplitudes, additional higher harmonics at two (T2_{2}) and three (T3_{3}) times the fundamental frequency were also detected as fingerprints of plastic deformation, resulting in additional heat dissipated during the loading half cycle. From the results obtained, the advantages of the calculated dissipated energy density over the surface temperature analysis was analyzed to predict the fatigue behavior. This analysis is believed to be valid for all materials due to the mathematical/physical principles involved. The results are thus expected to hold for other materials such as composites, rubbers, ceramics and metals

    The clinical features of the piriformis syndrome: a systematic review

    Piriformis syndrome, sciatica caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, has been described for over 70 years; yet, it remains controversial. The literature consists mainly of case series and narrative reviews. The objectives of the study were: first, to make the best use of existing evidence to estimate the frequencies of clinical features in patients reported to have PS; second, to identify future research questions. A systematic review was conducted of any study type that reported extractable data relevant to diagnosis. The search included all studies up to 1 March 2008 in four databases: AMED, CINAHL, Embase and Medline. Screening, data extraction and analysis were all performed independently by two reviewers. A total of 55 studies were included: 51 individual and 3 aggregated data studies, and 1 combined study. The most common features found were: buttock pain, external tenderness over the greater sciatic notch, aggravation of the pain through sitting and augmentation of the pain with manoeuvres that increase piriformis muscle tension. Future research could start with comparing the frequencies of these features in sciatica patients with and without disc herniation or spinal stenosis
