    Production status of GaAs/Ge solar cells and panels

    GaAs/Ge solar cells with lot average efficiencies in excess of 18 percent were produced by MOCVD growth techniques. A description of the cell, its performance and the production facility are discussed. Production GaAs/Ge cells of this type were recently assembled into circuits and bonded to aluminum honeycomb panels to be used as the solar array for the British UOSAT-F program

    Deferring the learning for better generalization in radial basis neural networks

Vienna, Austria, August 21–25, 2001The level of generalization of neural networks is heavily dependent on the quality of the training data. That is, some of the training patterns can be redundant or irrelevant. It has been shown that with careful dynamic selection of training patterns, better generalization performance may be obtained. Nevertheless, generalization is carried out independently of the novel patterns to be approximated. In this paper, we present a learning method that automatically selects the most appropriate training patterns to the new sample to be predicted. The proposed method has been applied to Radial Basis Neural Networks, whose generalization capability is usually very poor. The learning strategy slows down the response of the network in the generalisation phase. However, this does not introduces a significance limitation in the application of the method because of the fast training of Radial Basis Neural Networks

    Phase Change Material on Augmentation of Fresh Water Production Using Pyramid Solar Still

    The augmentation of fresh water and increase in the solar still efficiency of a triangular pyramid is added with phase change material (PCM) on the basin. Experimental studies were conducted and the effects of production of fresh water with and without PCM were investigated. Using paraffin as the PCM material, performance of the solar still were conducted on a hot, humid climate of Chennai (13°5′ 2" North, 80°16′ 12"East), India. The use of paraffin wax increases the latent heat storage so that the energy is stored in the PCM and in the absence of solar radiation it rejects its stored heat into the basin for further evaporation of water from the basin. Temperatures of water, Tw, Temperature of phase change material, TPCM, Temperature of cover, Tc were measured using thermocouple. Results show that there is an increase of maximum 20%, in productivity of fresh water with PCM

    Development of a Multi-Stage Filter System for Cabin Ventilation Systems on the ISS and Future Deep Space Missions

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) deep space exploration missions will be of significant duration requiring long-life and reliably performing spacecraft cabin ventilation filters. A particulate filter system is being developed at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to meet the challenges of these remote and long duration missions. The capabilities and features of the filter system are expected to expand the life and reduce the maintenance requirements over that of the current ISS (International Space Station) filter by providing pre-filtration stages with novel self-cleaning and regenerable techniques. The filter provides two regenerable pre-filtration stages using a screen mesh media and an impactor collection system, and also provides intermediate stage filtration employing self-replacing filter media. The filter system is also designed to be compatible with the interfaces and performance requirements of the ISS distributed ventilation architecture in the US modules to facilitate testing on ISS type test or mock up platforms. Currently, a prototype of the filter system is undergoing tests in a custom configured filter test stand at the NASA GRC. The test stand provides the same range of flow rates produced on the ISS distributed architecture, and is equipped and instrumented to perform filter tests based on industrial test standards. The test stand has been used successfully to perform filter and flow performance test on returned ISS Bacterial Filter Elements. Similar test protocols were used to characterize the performance of the current filter system. Different performing grades of filter media will be installed and tested on the filter system, and different test particle standards will be used to simulate the range of particulate matter particles and debris the filter will see during a mission. This paper will present results and analysis of the test data to guide and provide input to the next generation filter system

    Preventing transition to turbulence: a viscosity stratification does not always help

    In channel flows a step on the route to turbulence is the formation of streaks, often due to algebraic growth of disturbances. While a variation of viscosity in the gradient direction often plays a large role in laminar-turbulent transition in shear flows, we show that it has, surprisingly, little effect on the algebraic growth. Non-uniform viscosity therefore may not always work as a flow-control strategy for maintaining the flow as laminar.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
