On quasi-Jacobi and Jacobi-quasi bialgebroids
We study quasi-Jacobi and Jacobi-quasi bialgebroids and their relationships
with twisted Jacobi and quasi Jacobi manifolds. We show that we can construct
quasi-Lie bialgebroids from quasi-Jacobi bialgebroids, and conversely, and also
that the structures induced on their base manifolds are related via a quasi
Poissonization
2d Gauge Theories and Generalized Geometry
We show that in the context of two-dimensional sigma models minimal coupling
of an ordinary rigid symmetry Lie algebra leads naturally to the
appearance of the "generalized tangent bundle" by means of composite fields. Gauge transformations of the composite
fields follow the Courant bracket, closing upon the choice of a Dirac structure
(or, more generally, the choide of a "small
Dirac-Rinehart sheaf" ), in which the fields as well as the symmetry
parameters are to take values. In these new variables, the gauge theory takes
the form of a (non-topological) Dirac sigma model, which is applicable in a
more general context and proves to be universal in two space-time dimensions: A
gauging of of a standard sigma model with Wess-Zumino term
exists, \emph{iff} there is a prolongation of the rigid symmetry to a Lie
algebroid morphism from the action Lie algebroid
into (or the algebraic analogue of the morphism in the case of
). The gauged sigma model results from a pullback by this morphism
from the Dirac sigma model, which proves to be universal in two-spacetime

Classical limit in terms of symbolic dynamics for the quantum baker's map
We derive a simple closed form for the matrix elements of the quantum baker's
map that shows that the map is an approximate shift in a symbolic
representation based on discrete phase space. We use this result to give a
formal proof that the quantum baker's map approaches a classical Bernoulli

RACE-OC Project: Rotation and variability in young stellar associations within 100 pc
Our goal is to determine the rotational and magnetic-related activity
properties of stars at different stages of evolution. We have focussed our
attention on 6 young loose stellar associations within 100 pc and ages in the
range 8-70 Myr: TW Hydrae (~8 Myr), beta Pictoris (~10 Myr), Tucana/Horologium,
Columba, Carina (~30 Myr), and AB Doradus (~70 Myr). Additional data on alpha
Persei and the Pleiades from the literature is also considered. Rotational
periods of stars showing rotational modulation due to photospheric magnetic
activity (i.e. starspots) have been determined applying the Lomb-Scargle
periodogram technique to photometric time-series obtained by the All Sky
Automated Survey (ASAS). The magnetic activity level has been derived from the
amplitude of the V lightcurves. We detected the rotational modulation and
measured the rotation periods of 93 stars for the first time, and confirmed the
periods of 41 stars already known from the literature. For further 10 stars we
revised the period determinations by other authors. The sample was augmented
with periods of 21 additional stars retrieved from the literature. In this way,
for the first time we were able to determine largest set of rotation periods at
ages of ~8, ~10 and ~30 Myr, as well as increase by 150\% the number of known
periodic members of AB Dor.The analysis of the rotation periods in young
stellar associations, supplemented by Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and NGC2264
data from the literature, has allowed us to find that in the 0.6 - 1.2 solar
masses range the most significant variations of the rotation period
distribution are the spin-up between 9 and 30 Myr and the spin-down between 70
and 110 Myr. Variations between 30 and 70 Myr are rather doubtful, despite the
median period indicates a significant spin-up.Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
The young active star SAO 51891 (V383 Lac)
Our aim is investigating surface inhomogeneities of the young late-type star
SAO51891, from photosphere to upper chromosphere, analyzing contemporaneous
high-resolution spectra and broad-band photometry. The FOCES@CAHA spectral
range is used to determine spectral classification and derive vsini and Vrad.
The Li abundance is measured to estimate the age. The BVRIJHKs bands are used
to construct the SED. The variations of our BV fluxes and Teff are used to
infer the presence of photospheric spots and observe their behavior over time.
The chromospheric activity is studied applying the spectral subtraction
technique to Halpha, CaII H&K, Heps, and CaII IRT lines. We find SAO51891 to be
a young K0-1V star with Li abundance close to the Pleiades upper envelope,
confirming its youth (~100 Myr), also inferred from its kinematical membership
to the Local Association. We detect no IR excess from SED analysis, and
rotational modulation of luminosity, Teff, CaII, and Heps total fluxes. A spot
model with two active regions, ~240 K cooler than the surrounding photosphere,
fits our light/Teff curves, and reproduces the small-amplitude Vrad variations.
The anti-correlation of light curves and chromospheric diagnostics indicates
plages spatially associated with spots. The large amplitude observed in the
Heps-flux curve suggests that this line is very sensitive to the plage
presence. Finally, SAO51891 is a young active star, lacking significant amounts
of circumstellar dust or any evidence for low mass companions. The spots turn
out to be larger and warmer than those in less active MS stars. The Vrad
variation produced by spots has an amplitude comparable with those induced by
Jupiter-mass planets orbiting close to the star. SAO51891 is a good example of

The pharmacological regulation of cellular mitophagy
Small molecules are pharmacological tools of considerable value for dissecting complex biological processes and identifying potential therapeutic interventions. Recently, the cellular quality-control process of mitophagy has attracted considerable research interest; however, the limited availability of suitable chemical probes has restricted our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved. Current approaches to initiate mitophagy include acute dissipation of the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) by mitochondrial uncouplers (for example, FCCP/CCCP) and the use of antimycin A and oligomycin to impair respiration. Both approaches impair mitochondrial homeostasis and therefore limit the scope for dissection of subtle, bioenergy-related regulatory phenomena. Recently, novel mitophagy activators acting independently of the respiration collapse have been reported, offering new opportunities to understand the process and potential for therapeutic exploitation. We have summarized the current status of mitophagy modulators and analyzed the available chemical tools, commenting on their advantages, limitations and current applications
Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2
A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is
reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and
quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated
luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV
and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172
GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95%
confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2,
depending on the channel. The search for singly produced excited leptons and
quarks establishes upper limits on the ratio of the coupling of the excited
fermio

Search for charginos in e+e- interactions at sqrt(s) = 189 GeV
An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on
a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector
in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was
found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a
centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by
combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance
implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy
sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
