New Media, First Time Voters and the 2007 Australian Federal Election
Researchers suggest that the youth of today has disengaged from the political landscape in Australia. However, the online realm provides potential first time voters an avenue in which to engage in politics in an environment that is generally associated with a youthful demographic. New media tactics utilised during the 2007 Australian federal election aimed to not only attract youthful voters, but also to educate and deliver policy on a level generally associated with the 18-24 demographic. This study explored the effectiveness of new media in the political communication context, in particular with relation to first time voters. This research found that first time voters were not as engaged as predicted, and that the third party sites were more popular with undecided voters than the formal political party sites in voter influence

The Survey of Lines in M31 (SLIM): The Drivers of the [CII]/TIR Variation
The ratio of the [CII] 158m emission line over the total infrared
emission (TIR) is often used as a proxy for the photoelectric (PE) heating
efficiency () of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) photons absorbed
by dust in the interstellar medium. In the nearby galaxy M31, we measure a
strong radial variation of [CII]/TIR that we rule out as being due to an
intrinsic variation in . [CII]/TIR fails as a proxy for
, because the TIR measures all dust heating, not just the
contribution from FUV photons capable of ejecting electrons from dust grains.
Using extensive multiwavelength coverage from the FUV to far-infrared (FIR), we
infer the attenuated FUV emission (), and the total attenuated
flux (). We find [CII]/TIR to be strongly correlated with /, indicating that, in M31 at least, one of the
dominant drivers for [CII]/TIR variation is the relative hardness of the
absorbed stellar radiation field. We define ,
[CII]/ which should be more closely related to the actual PE
efficiency, which we find to be essentially constant () in all
explored fields in M31. This suggests that part of the observed variation of
[CII]/TIR in other galaxies is likely due to a change in the relative hardness
of the absorbed stellar radiation field, caused by a combination of variations
in the stellar population, dust opacity and galaxy metallicity, although PE

The positive soundscape project : a synthesis of results from many disciplines
This paper takes an overall view of ongoing findings from the Positive Soundscape Project, a large inter-disciplinary soundscapes study which is nearing completion. Qualitative fieldwork (soundwalks and focus groups) and lab-based listening tests have revealed that two key dimensions of the emotional response are calmness and vibrancy. In the lab these factors explain nearly 80% of the variance in listener response. Physiological validation is being sought using fMRI measurements, and these have so far shown significant differences in the response of the brain to affective and neutral soundscapes. A conceptual framework which links the key soundscape components and which could be used for future design is outlined. Metrics are suggested for some perceptual scales and possibilities for soundscape synthesis for design and user engagement are discussed, as are the applications of the results to future research and environmental noise policy
Age and Mass for 920 LMC Clusters Derived from 100 Million Monte Carlo Simulations
We present new age and mass estimates for 920 stellar clusters in the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) based on previously published broad-band photometry and
the stellar cluster analysis package, MASSCLEANage. Expressed in the generic
fitting formula, d^{2}N/dM dt ~ M^{\alpha} t^{\beta}, the distribution of
observed clusters is described by \alpha = -1.5 to -1.6 and \beta = -2.1 to
-2.2. For 288 of these clusters, ages have recently been determined based on
stellar photometric color-magnitude diagrams, allowing us to gauge the
confidence of our ages. The results look very promising, opening up the
possibility that this sample of 920 clusters, with reliable and consistent age,
mass and photometric measures, might be used to constrain important
characteristics about the stellar cluster population in the LMC. We also
investigate a traditional age determination method that uses a \chi^2
minimization routine to fit observed cluster colors to standard infinite mass
limit simple stellar population models. This reveals serious defects in the
derived cluster age distribution using this method. The traditional \chi^2
minimization method, due to the variation of U,B,V,R colors, will always
produce an overdensity of younger and older clusters, with an underdensity of
clusters in the log(age/yr)=[7.0,7.5] range. Finally, we present a unique
simulation aimed at illustrating and constraining the fading limit in observed
cluster distributions that includes the complex effects of stochastic

Easterly wave disturbances over Northeast Brazil: an observational analysis
This paper aims to identify the circulation associated with Easterly Wave Disturbances (EWDs) that propagate toward the Eastern Northeast Brazil (ENEB) and their impact on the rainfall over ENEB during 2006 and 2007 rainy seasons (April–July). The EWDs identification and trajectory are analyzed using an automatic tracking technique (TracKH). The EWDs circulation patterns and their main features were obtained using the composite technique. To evaluate the TracKH efficiency, a validation was done by comparing the EWDs number tracked against observed cases obtained from an observational analysis. The mean characteristics of EWDs are 5.5-day period, propagation speed of ~9.5 m·s−1, and a 4500 km wavelength. A synoptic analysis shows that between days −2 d and 0 d, the low level winds presented cyclonic relative vorticity and convergence anomalies both in 2006 and 2007. The EWDs signals are strongest at low levels. The EWDs propagation is associated with relative humidity and precipitation positive anomalies and OLR and omega negative anomalies. The EWDs tracks are seen over all ENEB and their lysis occurs between the ENEB and marginally inside the continent. The tracking captured 71% of EWDs in all periods, indicating that an objective analysis is a promising method for EWDs detection
Visual assessment soil quality structure methodology applied to Oxisol under different soil use and management
O aumento da demanda pela avaliação da qualidade da estrutura do solo para o adequado crescimento de plantas tem motivado pesquisadores a desenvolverem técnicas visuais de avaliação, a campo, simples e confiáveis para esse fim. No Brasil, um número reduzido de estudos foi realizado empregando métodos visuais de diagnóstico do estado estrutural de solos no campo. Esse trabalho testou a hipótese de que o método de Avaliação Visual da Qualidade da Estrutura do Solo desenvolvido por BALL et al. (2007) para solos de clima temperado pode ser aplicado na identificação de campo da qualidade estrutural de um Latossolo Vermelho Distroférrico sob diferentes sistemas de uso e manejo. Para isso, foram avaliadas amostras indeformadas coletadas de mata preservada (M), sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP) e sistema plantio direto (SPD). A avaliação da estrutura apoiou-se na aparência, na resistência e nas características das unidades estruturais de blocos de solo e foi definida por cinco escores visuais de classificação de qualidade. O método empregado permitiu distinguir a qualidade do solo de diferentes sistemas de uso e manejo a partir da avaliação da estrutura da camada estudada.The increasing demand for assessing soil structure for crop growth has motivated researchers to develop simple and reliable visual indicators to assess soil structure at the field. There are a few records in Brazil indicating the use of visual techniques for assessing soil physical quality. This paper tested the hypothesis that the Visual Soil Structure Quality Assessment methodology developed by BALL et al. (2007) is reliable for identifying the structural quality of tropical and subtropical soils under different soil management systems. Therefore, the overall objective of this paper was to visually identify the structural quality of an Oxisol under forest, crop-livestock rotation and no-till system. The structure evaluation was based on appearance, strength and characteristics of structural units from soil blocks, and was defined by five visual scores from the classification quality. The maize (Zea mays L.) roothairless3 gene encodes a putative GPI-anchored, monocot-specific, COBRA-like protein that significantly affects grain yield
The rth3 (roothairless 3) mutant is specifically affected in root hair elongation. We report here the cloning of the rth3 gene via a PCR-based strategy (amplification of insertion mutagenized sites) and demonstrate that it encodes a COBRA-like protein that displays all the structural features of a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor. Genes of the COBRA family are involved in various types of cell expansion and cell wall biosynthesis. The rth3 gene belongs to a monocot-specific clade of the COBRA gene family comprising two maize and two rice genes. While the rice (Oryza sativa) gene OsBC1L1 appears to be orthologous to rth3 based on sequence similarity (86% identity at the protein level) and maize/rice synteny, the maize (Zea mays L.) rth3-like gene does not appear to be a functional homolog of rth3based on their distinct expression profiles. Massively parallel signature sequencing analysis detected rth3 expression in all analyzed tissues, but at relatively low levels, with the most abundant expression in primary roots where the root hair phenotype is manifested.In situ hybridization experiments confine rth3 expression to root hair-forming epidermal cells and lateral root primordia. Remarkably, in replicated field trials involving near-isogenic lines, the rth3 mutant conferred significant losses in grain yield
