EIS - An Imaging Survey for VLT Science
The imaging data assembled by the recently completed ESO Imaging Survey (EIS)
are reviewed and their scientific value briefly assessed. Among the various
applications, the imaging data has been used to build a large sample of
candidate distant clusters of galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere to be used
for follow-up observations with the VLT as well as other space and ground-based
facilities. Preliminary results from ongoing work to confirm these candidates
are reported and the future prospects discussed.Comment: 6 pages, To be published in the Proceedings of the ``VLT Opening

Charmonium production in Pb-Pb collisions with ALICE at the LHC
We report on published charmonium measurements performed by ALICE, at the
LHC, in Pb-Pb collisions at a center of mass energy per nucleon-nucleon
collision TeV, at both mid () and forward
() rapidities. The nuclear modification factor of inclusive is presented as a function of the collision centrality and the transverse momentum, . The variation of the
mean transverse momentum square as a function of the collision centrality is
also discussed. These measurements are compared to state of the art models that
include one or several of the following mechanisms: color screening of the
charm quarks, statistical hadronization at the QGP phase boundary, balance
between dissociation and regeneration in the QGP,
interaction with a dense comoving medium. Results on the production of the
heavier and less bound meson in Pb-Pb collisions at forward-rapidity
are also presented and compared to both models and measurements performed by
other experiments. At mid-rapidity we also report on ALICE unique capability to
separate prompt and non-prompt production down to low ( GeV/) and thus disentangle between effects on prompt mesons and energy loss of quarks in the QGP.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, Quark Matter 2015, Kobe, Japa
