Extending local features with contextual information in graph kernels
Graph kernels are usually defined in terms of simpler kernels over local
substructures of the original graphs. Different kernels consider different
types of substructures. However, in some cases they have similar predictive
performances, probably because the substructures can be interpreted as
approximations of the subgraphs they induce. In this paper, we propose to
associate to each feature a piece of information about the context in which the
feature appears in the graph. A substructure appearing in two different graphs
will match only if it appears with the same context in both graphs. We propose
a kernel based on this idea that considers trees as substructures, and where
the contexts are features too. The kernel is inspired from the framework in
[6], even if it is not part of it. We give an efficient algorithm for computing
the kernel and show promising results on real-world graph classification

Cooperation between interleukin-5 and the chemokine eotaxin to induce eosinophil accumulation in vivo.
Experiments were designed to study the effect of systemically administered IL-5 on local eosinophil accumulation induced by the intradermal injection of the chemokine eotaxin in the guinea pig. Intravenous interleukin-5 (IL-5) stimulated a rapid and dramatic increase in the numbers of accumulating eosinophils induced by i.d.-injected eotaxin and, for comparison, leukotriene B4. The numbers of locally accumulating eosinophils correlated directly with a rapid increase in circulating eosinophils: circulating eosinophil numbers were 13-fold higher 1 h after intravenous IL-5 (18.3 pmol/kg). This increase in circulating cells corresponded with a reduction in the number of displaceable eosinophils recovered after flushing out the femur bone marrow cavity. Intradermal IL-5, at the doses tested, did not induce significant eosinophil accumulation. We propose that these experiments simulate important early features of the tissue response to local allergen exposure in a sensitized individual, with eosinophil chemoattractant chemokines having an important local role in eosinophil recruitment from blood microvessels, and IL-5 facilitating this process by acting remotely as a hormone to stimulate the release into the circulation of a rapidly mobilizable pool of bone marrow eosinophils. This action of IL-5 would be complementary to the other established activities of IL-5 that operate over a longer time course
The Positional Match Running Performance of Elite Gaelic Football.
There is currently limited information available on match running performance in Gaelic football. The objective of the current study was to report on the match running profile of elite male Gaelic football and assess positional running performance. In this observational study 50 elite male Gaelic football players wore 4-Hz GPS units (VXsports, New Zealand) across 30 competitive games with a total of 212 full game data sets collected. Activity was classed according to total distance, high speed distance (≥17 km.h), sprint distance (≥22 km.h), mean velocity (km.h), peak velocity (km.h) and number of accelerations. The average match distance was 8160 ± 1482 m, reflective of a relative distance of 116 ± 21 m.min, with 1731 ± 659 m covered at high speed which is reflective of a relative high speed distance of 25 ± 9 m.min. The observed sprint distance was 445 ± 169 m distributed across 44 sprint actions. The peak velocity was 30.3 ± 1.8 km.h with a mean velocity of 6.5 ± 1.2 km.h. Players completed 184 ± 40 accelerations which represent 2.6 ± 0.5 a.min. There were significant differences between positional groups for both total running distance, high speed running distance and sprint distance, with midfielders covering more total and high speed running distance, compared to other positions (p<0.001). There was a reduction in high speed and sprint distance between the first and second half (p<0.001). Reductions in running performance were position dependant with the middle three positions experiencing the highest decrement in performance. The current study is the first to communicate a detailed description of match running performance during competitive elite Gaelic football match play
Linear Confinement and AdS/QCD
In a theory with linear confinement, such as QCD, the masses squared m^2 of
mesons with high spin S or high radial excitation number n are expected, from
semiclassical arguments, to grow linearly with S and n. We show that this
behavior can be reproduced within a putative 5-dimensional theory
holographically dual to QCD (AdS/QCD). With the assumption that such a dual
theory exists and describes highly excited mesons as well, we show that
asymptotically linear m^2 spectrum translates into a strong constraint on the
INFRARED behavior of that theory. In the simplest model which obeys such a
constraint we find m^2 ~ (n+S).Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Anthropometric and Performance Characteristics of Elite Hurling Players
The purpose of the present study was to examine variations in the anthropometric and performance characteristics of elite hurling players in relation to playing position. Forty-one male, elite intercounty hurlers (25 ± 4 years), 4 goalkeepers, 8 full-backs, 8 halfback, 6 midfielders, 8 half-forwards and 7 full-forwards underwent measurements of standard anthropometric (stature, body mass, sum of five skinfolds and adipose tissue percentage estimates (%AT)) and performance characteristics (counter-movement jump (CMJ), CMJ peak power, CMJ relative peak power, 5-, 10-, 20-m sprint times and estimated V•O2max) during the later stages of the competitive season. A clear hierarchical anthropometric profile is evident with goalkeepers being the taller (184.3 ± 3.7 m), possessing the highest body mass (88.7 ± 5.7 kg) and adiposity (13.2 ± 3.1 %AT) than their outfield colleagues. Half-backs (47.4 ± 2.4 cm) and half-forwards (50.7 ± 5.9 cm) produced the highest CMJ scores; a similar profile was evident for sprint times. Midfielders (60.1 ± 1.4 mL.kg-1.min-1) exhibited a significantly (p<0.05) greater maximal oxygen uptake than all other playing positions. Differences in the anthropometric and performance characteristics of other playing positions whilst evident were non-significant. This study provides novel data, as it is the first report to present normative anthropometric and performance data for elite hurling players which to date has not been present in the literature. The enhanced maximal oxygen uptake in midfield players is likely due to different performance, technical and tactical demands associated with this position
Origin of the unusually low nitrogen abundances in young populations of the Large Magellanic Cloud
It is a longstanding problem that HII regions and very young stellar
populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have the nitrogen abundances
([N/H]) by a factor of ~7 lower than the solar value. We here discuss a new
scenario in which the observed unusually low nitrogen abundances can be closely
associated with recent collision and subsequent accretion of HI high velocity
clouds (HVCs) that surround the Galaxy and have low nitrogen abundances. We
show that if the observed low [N/H] is limited to very young stars with ages
less than ~10^7 yr, then the collision/accretion rate of the HVCs onto the LMC
needs to be ~ 0.2 M_sun/yr (corresponding to the total HVC mass of 10^6-10^7
M_sun) to dilute the original interstellar medium (ISM) before star formation.
The required accretion rate means that even if the typical mass of HVCs
accreted onto the LMC is ~ 10^7 M_sun, the Galaxy needs to have ~2500 massive
HVCs within the LMC's orbital radius with respect to the Galactic center. The
required rather large number of massive HVCs drives us to suggest that the HVCs
are not likely to efficiently dilute the ISM of the LMC and consequently lower
the [N/H]. We thus suggest the transfer of gas with low [N/H] from the Small
Magellanic Cloud (SMC) to the LMC as a promising scenario that can explain the

Eotaxin: a potent eosinophil chemoattractant cytokine detected in a guinea pig model of allergic airways inflammation.
Eosinophil accumulation is a prominent feature of allergic inflammatory reactions, such as those occurring in the lung of the allergic asthmatic, but the endogenous chemoattractants involved have not been identified. We have investigated this in an established model of allergic inflammation, using in vivo systems both to generate and assay relevant activity. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid was taken from sensitized guinea pigs at intervals after aerosol challenge with ovalbumin. BAL fluid was injected intradermally in unsensitized assay guinea pigs and the accumulation of intravenously injected 111In-eosinophils was measured. Activity was detected at 30 min after allergen challenge, peaking from 3 to 6 h and declining to low levels by 24 h. 3-h BAL fluid was purified using high performance liquid chromatography techniques in conjunction with the skin assay. Microsequencing revealed a novel protein from the C-C branch of the platelet factor 4 superfamily of chemotactic cytokines. The protein, eotaxin, exhibits homology of 53% with human MCP-1, 44% with guinea pig MCP-1, 31% with human MIP-1α, and 26% with human RANTES. Laser desorption time of flight mass analysis gave four different signals (8.15, 8.38, 8.81, and 9.03 kD), probably reflecting differential O-glycosylation. Eotaxin was highly potent, inducing substantial 111In-eosinophil accumulation at a 1-2-pmol dose in the skin, but did not induce significant 111In-neutrophil accumulation. Eotaxin was a potent stimulator of both guinea pig and human eosinophils in vitro. Human recombinant RANTES, MIP-1α, and MCP-1 were all inactive in inducing 111In-eosinophil accumulation in guinea pig skin; however, evidence was obtained that eotaxin shares a binding site with RANTES on guinea pig eosinophils. This is the first description of a potent eosinophil chemoattractant cytokine generated in vivo and suggests the possibility that similar molecules may be important in the human asthmatic lung

equations, with Liouvillian functions in the solution (LFOODEs). As in the case
of the Prelle-Singer procedure, this method is based on the knowledge of the

Control of polymorphism in coronene by the application of magnetic fields
Coronene, a polyaromatic hydrocarbon, has been crystallized for the first
time in a different polymorph using a crystal growth method that utilizes
magnetic fields to access a unit cell configuration that was hitherto unknown.
Crystals grown in magnetic field of 1 T are larger, have a different appearance
to those grown in zero field and retain their structure in ambient conditions.
We identify the new form, beta-coronene, as the most stable at low
temperatures. As a result of the new supramolecular configuration we report

The illusion of competency versus the desirability of expertise: Seeking a common standard for support professions in sport
In this paper we examine and challenge the competency-based models which currently dominate accreditation and development systems in sport support disciplines, largely the sciences and coaching. Through consideration of exemplar shortcomings, the limitations of competency-based systems are presented as failing to cater for the complexity of decision making and the need for proactive experimentation essential to effective practice. To provide a better fit with the challenges of the various disciplines in their work with performers, an alternative approach is presented which focuses on the promotion, evaluation and elaboration of expertise. Such an approach resonates with important characteristics of professions, whilst also providing for the essential ‘shades of grey’ inherent in work with human participants. Key differences between the approaches are considered through exemplars of evaluation processes. The expertise-focused method, although inherently more complex, is seen as offering a less ambiguous and more positive route, both through more accurate representation of essential professional competence and through facilitation of future growth in proficiency and evolution of expertise in practice. Examples from the literature are also presented, offering further support for the practicalities of this approach
