    cAMP-Signalling Regulates Gametocyte-Infected Erythrocyte Deformability Required for Malaria Parasite Transmission.

    Get PDF
    Blocking Plasmodium falciparum transmission to mosquitoes has been designated a strategic objective in the global agenda of malaria elimination. Transmission is ensured by gametocyte-infected erythrocytes (GIE) that sequester in the bone marrow and at maturation are released into peripheral blood from where they are taken up during a mosquito blood meal. Release into the blood circulation is accompanied by an increase in GIE deformability that allows them to pass through the spleen. Here, we used a microsphere matrix to mimic splenic filtration and investigated the role of cAMP-signalling in regulating GIE deformability. We demonstrated that mature GIE deformability is dependent on reduced cAMP-signalling and on increased phosphodiesterase expression in stage V gametocytes, and that parasite cAMP-dependent kinase activity contributes to the stiffness of immature gametocytes. Importantly, pharmacological agents that raise cAMP levels in transmissible stage V gametocytes render them less deformable and hence less likely to circulate through the spleen. Therefore, phosphodiesterase inhibitors that raise cAMP levels in P. falciparum infected erythrocytes, such as sildenafil, represent new candidate drugs to block transmission of malaria parasites

    Measurements of branching fraction ratios and CP-asymmetries in suppressed B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)K^- and B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)pi^- decays

    We report the first reconstruction in hadron collisions of the suppressed decays B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)K^- and B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)pi^-, sensitive to the CKM phase gamma, using data from 7 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. We reconstruct a signal for the B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)K^- suppressed mode with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, and measure the ratios of the suppressed to favored branching fractions R(K) = [22.0 \pm 8.6(stat)\pm 2.6(syst)]\times 10^-3, R^+(K) = [42.6\pm 13.7(stat)\pm 2.8(syst)]\times 10^-3, R^-(K)= [3.8\pm 10.3(stat)\pm 2.7(syst]\times 10^-3, as well as the direct CP-violating asymmetry A(K) = -0.82\pm 0.44(stat)\pm 0.09(syst) of this mode. Corresponding quantities for B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)pi^- decay are also reported.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted by Phys.Rev.D Rapid Communications for Publicatio

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    Get PDF
    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    Get PDF
    The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented

    Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined. For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4, while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than 90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions of all quantities are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO

    Direito de resposta no jornalismo: instrumento de cidadania e democracia

    Get PDF
    This article aims to present the right of reply as a driving force for the quality of journalism, committed to ethics and the pursuit of truth, and the exercise of citizenship and democracy. Created for the purpose of correcting distortion already publicized by the media, this right opens up space for voices that are often silenced – which leads us to talk about freedom of the press and of expression, and the rights to inform and to communicate. A brief comparative analysis is also made here between the current law that guides the right of reply in the country (Law 13188 of 2015) and the former Press Law (Law 5250 of 1967), which covered the issue and stopped being valid ten years ago, after 42 years of validity.O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar o direito de resposta como instrumento impulsionador do jornalismo de qualidade, comprometido com a ética e a busca da verdade, e do exercício da cidadania e da democracia. Criado com a finalidade de corrigir distorção já publicizada pelos meios de comunicação, esse direito abre espaço para vozes que frequentemente são silenciadas – o que nos leva a falar sobre liberdade de imprensa e de expressão, e os direitos a informar e à comunicação. Aqui também é feita uma análise comparativa resumida entre a atual lei que rege o direito de resposta no país (Lei nº 13.188/15) e a antiga Lei de Imprensa (Lei nº 5.250/67), que abarcava o tema e deixou de valer há exatos 10 anos, após 42 anos de vigência

    Interactions of CO2 with various functional molecules

    The CO2 capturing and sequestration are of importance in environmental science. Understanding of the CO2-interactions with various functional molecules including multi-N-containing superbases and heteroaromatic ring systems is essential for designing novel materials to effectively capture the CO2 gas. These interactions are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion correction and high level wave function theory (resolution-of-identity (RI) spin-component-scaling (scs) Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2) and coupled cluster with single, double and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T))). We found intriguing molecular systems of melamine, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5- ene (TBD), 7-azaindole and guanidine, which show much stronger CO2 interactions than the well-known functional systems such as amines. In particular, melamine could be exploited to design novel materials to capture the CO2 gas, since one CO2 molecule can be coordinated by four melamine molecules, which gives a binding energy (BE) of similar to 85 kJ mol(-1), much larger than in other cases.open2
