NGC 2419 -- Another Remnant of Accretion by the Milky Way
We isolate a sample of 43 upper RGB stars in the extreme outer halo Galactic
globular cluster NGC 2419 from two Keck/DEIMOS slitmasks. The probability that
there is more than one contaminating halo field star in this sample is
extremely low. Analysis of moderate resolution spectra of these cluster
members, as well as of our Keck/HIRES high resolution spectra of a subsample of
them, demonstrates that there is a small but real spread in Ca abundance of ~
0.2 dex within this massive metal-poor globular cluster. This provides
additional support to earlier suggestions that NGC 2419 is the remnant of a
dwarf galaxy accreted long ago by the Milky Way.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journa
Multi-Element Abundance Measurements from Medium-Resolution Spectra. II. Catalog of Stars in Milky Way Dwarf Satellite Galaxies
We present a catalog of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 2961 red giant
stars that are likely members of eight dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky
Way (MW): Sculptor, Fornax, Leo I, Sextans, Leo II, Canes Venatici I, Ursa
Minor, and Draco. For the purposes of validating our measurements, we also
observed 445 red giants in MW globular clusters and 21 field red giants in the
MW halo. The measurements are based on Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution
spectroscopy combined with spectral synthesis. We estimate uncertainties in
[Fe/H] by quantifying the dispersion of [Fe/H] measurements in a sample of
stars in monometallic globular clusters. We estimate uncertainties in Mg, Si,
Ca, and Ti abundances by comparing our medium-resolution spectroscopic
measurements to high-resolution spectroscopic abundances of the same stars. For
this purpose, our DEIMOS sample included 132 red giants with published
high-resolution spectroscopy in globular clusters, the MW halo field, and dwarf
galaxies. The standard deviations of the differences in [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe]
(the average of [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe]) between the two samples
is 0.15 and 0.16, respectively. This catalog represents the largest sample of
multi-element abundances in dwarf galaxies to date. The next papers in this
series draw conclusions on the chemical evolution, gas dynamics, and star
formation histories from the catalog presented here. The wide range of dwarf
galaxy luminosity reveals the dependence of dwarf galaxy chemical evolution on

Willman 1 - a probable dwarf galaxy with an irregular kinematic distribution
We investigate the kinematic properties and stellar population of the
Galactic satellite Willman 1 (Wil 1) by combining Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy with
KPNO mosaic camera imaging. Wil 1 is an ultra-low luminosity Milky Way
companion. This object lies in a region of size-luminosity space (M_V ~ -2 mag,
d ~ 38 kpc, r_half ~ 20 pc) also occupied by the Galactic satellites Bo\"otes
II and Segue 1 and 2, but no other known old stellar system. We use kinematic
and color-magnitude criteria to identify 45 stars as possible members of Wil 1.
With a systemic velocity of v_helio = -12.8 +/- 1.0 km/s, Wil 1 stars have
velocities similar to those of foreground Milky Way stars. Informed by
Monte-Carlo simulations, we identify 5 of the 45 candidate member stars as
likely foreground contaminants. We confirm a significant spread in the
abundances of the likely Wil 1 red giant branch members ([Fe/H] = -1.73 +/-
0.12 and -2.65 +/- 0.12, [Ca/Fe] = -0.4 +/- 0.18 and +0.13 +/- 0.28). This
spread supports the scenario that Wil 1 is an ultra-low luminosity dwarf galaxy
rather than a star cluster. Wil 1's innermost stars move with radial velocities
offset by 8 km/s from its outer stars and have a velocity dispersion consistent
with 0 km/s, suggesting that Wil 1 may not be in dynamical equilibrium. The
combination of the foreground contamination and unusual kinematic distribution
make it difficult to robustly determine the dark matter mass of Wil 1. As a
result, X-ray or gamma-ray observations of Wil 1 that attempt to constrain
models of particle dark matter using an equilibrium mass model are strongly
affected by the systematics in the observations presented here. We conclude
that, despite the unusual features in the Wil 1 kinematic distribution,
evidence indicates that this object is, or at least once was, a dwarf galaxy.Comment: AJ accepted version. The primary improvements are a detailed

The Environmental Influence on the Evolution of Local Galaxies
The results of an Halpha photometric survey of 30 dwarf galaxies of various
morphologies in the Centaurus A and Sculptor groups are presented. Of these 30,
emission was detected in 13: eight are of late-type, two are early-type and
three are of mixed-morphology. The typical flux detection limit of 2e-16 erg
s-1 cm-2, translates into a Star Formation Rate (SFR) detection limit of 4e-6
M_sol yr-1 . In the light of these results, the morphology-density relation is
reexamined: It is shown that, despite a number of unaccounted parameters, there
are significant correlations between the factors determining the morphological
type of a galaxy and its environment. Dwarf galaxies in high density regions
have lower current SFR and lower neutral gas content than their low density
counterparts, confirming earlier results from the Local Group and other denser
environments. The effect of environment is also seen in the timescale formed
from the ratio of blue luminosity to current SFR - dwarfs in higher density
environments have larger values, indicating relatively higher past average SFR.
The influence of environment extends very far and no dwarfs from our sample can

Malaria transmission in Africa occurs predominantly inside houses where the primary vectors prefer to feed. Human preference and investment in blocking of specific entry points for mosquitoes into houses was evaluated and compared with known entry point preferences of the mosquitoes themselves.\ud

Cross-sectional household surveys were conducted in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to estimate usage levels of available options for house proofing against mosquito entry, namely window screens, ceilings and blocking of eaves. These surveys also enabled evaluation of household expenditure on screens and ceilings and the motivation behind their installation.\ud

Over three quarters (82.8%) of the 579 houses surveyed in Dar es Salaam had window screens, while almost half (48.9%) had ceilings. Prevention of mosquito entry was cited as a reason for installation of window screens and ceilings by 91.4% (394/431) and 55.7% (127/228) of respondents, respectively, but prevention of malaria was rarely cited (4.3%, 22/508). The median cost of window screens was between US 301-400. The market value of insecticide-treated nets, window screening and ceilings currently in use in the city was estimated as 2, 5 and 42 million US$. More than three quarters of the respondents that lacked them said it was too expensive to install ceilings (82.2%) or window screens (75.5%).\ud

High coverage and spending on screens and ceilings implies that these techniques are highly acceptable and excellent uptake can be achieved in urban settings like Dar es Salaam. Effective models for promotion and subsidization should be developed and evaluated, particularly for installation of ceilings that prevent entry via the eaves, which are the most important entry point for mosquitoes that cause malaria, a variety of neglected tropical diseases and the nuisance which motivates uptake
A Complete Spectroscopic Survey of the Milky Way Satellite Segue 1: The Darkest Galaxy
We present the results of a comprehensive Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of
the ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxy Segue 1. We have obtained velocity
measurements for 98.2% of the stars within 67 pc (10 arcmin, or 2.3 half-light
radii) of the center of Segue 1 that have colors and magnitudes consistent with
membership, down to a magnitude limit of r=21.7. Based on photometric,
kinematic, and metallicity information, we identify 71 stars as probable Segue
1 members, including some as far out as 87 pc. After correcting for the
influence of binary stars using repeated velocity measurements, we determine a
velocity dispersion of 3.7^{+1.4}_{-1.1} km/s, with a corresponding mass within
the half-light radius of 5.8^{+8.2}_{-3.1} x 10^5 Msun. The stellar kinematics
of Segue 1 require very high mass-to-light ratios unless the system is far from
dynamical equilibrium, even if the period distribution of unresolved binary
stars is skewed toward implausibly short periods. With a total luminosity less
than that of a single bright red giant and a V-band mass-to-light ratio of 3400
Msun/Lsun, Segue 1 is the darkest galaxy currently known. We critically
re-examine recent claims that Segue 1 is a tidally disrupting star cluster and
that kinematic samples are contaminated by the Sagittarius stream. The
extremely low metallicities ([Fe/H] < -3) of two Segue 1 stars and the large
metallicity spread among the members demonstrate conclusively that Segue 1 is a
dwarf galaxy, and we find no evidence in favor of tidal effects. We also show
that contamination by the Sagittarius stream has been overestimated. Segue 1
has the highest measured dark matter density of any known galaxy and will
therefore be a prime testing ground for dark matter physics and galaxy

The long-term impact of the MEMA kwa Vijana adolescent sexual and reproductive health intervention: effect of dose and time since intervention exposure.
BACKGROUND: Despite recent decreases in HIV incidence in many sub-Saharan African countries, there is little evidence that specific behavioural interventions have led to a reduction in HIV among young people. Further and wider-scale decreases in HIV require better understanding of when behaviour change occurs and why. The MEMA kwa Vijana adolescent sexual and reproductive health intervention has been implemented in rural Mwanza, Tanzania since 1999. A long-term evaluation in 2007/8 found that the intervention improved knowledge, attitudes to sex and some reported risk behaviours, but not HIV or HSV2 prevalence. The aim of this paper was to assess the differential impact of the intervention according to gender, age, marital status, number of years of exposure and time since last exposure to the intervention. METHODS: In 2007, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in the 20 trial communities among 13,814 young people (15-30 yrs) who had attended intervention or comparison schools between 1999 and 2002. Outcomes for which the intervention had an impact in 2001 or 2007 were included in this subgroup analysis. Data were analysed using cluster-level methods for stratified cluster-randomised trials, using interaction tests to determine if intervention impact differed by subgroup. RESULTS: Taking into account multiplicity of testing, concurrence with a priori hypotheses and consistency within the results no strong effect-modifiers emerged. Impact on pregnancy knowledge and reported attitudes to sex increased with years of exposure to high-quality intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The desirable long-term impact of the MEMA kwa Vijana intervention did not vary greatly according to the subgroups examined. This suggests that the intervention can have an impact on a broad cross-section of young people in rural Mwanza. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00248469
Photometric Properties of Six Local Volume Dwarf Galaxies from Deep Near-Infrared Observations
We have obtained deep near-infrared - (1.25 m), - (1.65m)
and -band (2.15 m) imaging for a sample of six dwarf galaxies
(M_B\ga-17 mag) in the Local Volume (LV, D\la10 Mpc). The sample consists
mainly of early-type dwarf galaxies found in various environments in the LV.
Two galaxies (LEDA 166099 and UGCA 200) in the sample are detected in the
near-infrared for the first time. The deep near-infrared images allow for a
detailed study of the photometric and structural properties of each galaxy. The
surface brightness profiles of the galaxies are detected down to the ~ isophote in the - and -bands, and in
the -band. The total magnitudes of the galaxies are derived in the three
wavelength bands. For the brightest galaxies (M_B\la-15.5 mag) in the sample,
we find that the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) underestimates the total
magnitudes of these systems by up to \la0.5 mag. The radial surface
brightness profiles of the galaxies are fitted with an exponential (for those
galaxies having a stellar disk) or S\'ersic law to derive the structure of the
underlying stellar component. In particular, the effective surface brightness
() and effective radius () are determined from the analytic fits to
the surface brightness profile. The - colours for the galaxies have
been measured to explore the luminosity-metallicity relation for early-type
dwarfs. In addition, the - colours of the galaxies are used to assess
their evolutionary state relative to other galaxy morphologies. The total
stellar masses of the dwarf galaxies are derived from the -band photometric
measurements. These will later be compared to the dynamical mass estimates for

Stable ultrahigh-density magneto-optical recordings using introduced linear defects
The stability of data bits in magnetic recording media at ultrahigh densities
is compromised by thermal `flips' -- magnetic spin reversals -- of nano-sized
spin domains, which erase the stored information. Media that are magnetized
perpendicular to the plane of the film, such as ultrathin cobalt films or
multilayered structures, are more stable against thermal self-erasure than
conventional memory devices. In this context, magneto-optical memories seem
particularly promising for ultrahigh-density recording on portable disks, and
bit densities of 100 Gbit inch have been demonstrated using recent
advances in the bit writing and reading techniques. But the roughness and
mobility of the magnetic domain walls prevents closer packing of the magnetic
bits, and therefore presents a challenge to reaching even higher bit densities.
Here we report that the strain imposed by a linear defect in a magnetic thin
film can smooth rough domain walls over regions hundreds of micrometers in
size, and halt their motion. A scaling analysis of this process, based on the
generic physics of disorder-controlled elastic lines, points to a simple way by
which magnetic media might be prepared that can store data at densities in

Synthesis and structural characterization of a mimetic membrane-anchored prion protein
During pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) an abnormal form (PrPSc) of the host encoded prion protein (PrPC) accumulates in insoluble fibrils and plaques. The two forms of PrP appear to have identical covalent structures, but differ in secondary and tertiary structure. Both PrPC and PrPSc have glycosylphospatidylinositol (GPI) anchors through which the protein is tethered to cell membranes. Membrane attachment has been suggested to play a role in the conversion of PrPC to PrPSc, but the majority of in vitro studies of the function, structure, folding and stability of PrP use recombinant protein lacking the GPI anchor. In order to study the effects of membranes on the structure of PrP, we synthesized a GPI anchor mimetic (GPIm), which we have covalently coupled to a genetically engineered cysteine residue at the C-terminus of recombinant PrP. The lipid anchor places the protein at the same distance from the membrane as does the naturally occurring GPI anchor. We demonstrate that PrP coupled to GPIm (PrP-GPIm) inserts into model lipid membranes and that structural information can be obtained from this membrane-anchored PrP. We show that the structure of PrP-GPIm reconstituted in phosphatidylcholine and raft membranes resembles that of PrP, without a GPI anchor, in solution. The results provide experimental evidence in support of previous suggestions that NMR structures of soluble, anchor-free forms of PrP represent the structure of cellular, membrane-anchored PrP. The availability of a lipid-anchored construct of PrP provides a unique model to investigate the effects of different lipid environments on the structure and conversion mechanisms of PrP
