A Study of the Orbits of the Logarithmic Potential for Galaxies
The logarithmic potential is of great interest and relevance in the study of
the dynamics of galaxies. Some small corrections to the work of Contopoulos &
Seimenis (1990) who used the method of Prendergast (1982) to find periodic
orbits and bifurcations within such a potential are presented. The solution of
the orbital radial equation for the purely radial logarithmic potential is then
considered using the p-ellipse (precessing ellipse) method pioneered by Struck
(2006). This differential orbital equation is a special case of the generalized
Burgers equation. The apsidal angle is also determined, both numerically as
well as analytically by means of the Lambert W and the Polylogarithm functions.
The use of these functions in computing the gravitational lensing produced by

‘Why can’t you just be fine?’:An autoethnography of self-harm from a lived experience and nursing perspective
Psychiatric discourse problematises self-harm as a psychopathological behaviour indicative of individualistic deficiency. This guides clinical priorities in treatment whilst negating salient components and individual preferences. Conversely, survivor-controlled research emphasises underacknowledged aspects of self-harm, such as its embodied emotionality as embedded within sociocultural context. This suggests a need for re-theorisation. Autoethnography (AE) utilises the researcher as the main source of data to elucidate social phenomena. Through AE, I consider my lived and professional experiences, as a registered general nurse, of self-harm by referring to my medical notes, memory reflections and personal diary entries as contextualised to self-harm literature. This lived experience (LE) perspective of self-harm is derived from subjective experience and contemporary literature, framed within survivor epistemology. This novel understanding argues that people with self-harm may experience immersive, aversive embodied emotionality arising from sociocultural and relational conflict. It considers self-harm as supporting the person to (1) be an integrated whole; (2) employ self-care; and (3) connect with oneself and others. This LE perspective directly critiques dominant psychiatric conceptualisations, instead compassionately framing self-harm as socially implicated. This could improve societal understanding, reduce pejorative attitudes and benefit people with LE
The Precursors and Products of Justice Climates: Group Leader Antecedents and Employee Attitudinal Consequences
Drawing on the organizational justice, organizational climate, leadership and personality, and social comparison theory literatures, we develop hypotheses about the effects of leader personality on the development of three types of justice climates (e.g., procedural, interpersonal, and informational), and the moderating effects of these climates on individual level justice- attitude relationships. Largely consistent with the theoretically-derived hypotheses, the results showed that leader (a) agreeableness was positively related to procedural, interpersonal and informational justice climates, (b) conscientiousness was positively related to a procedural justice climate, and (c) neuroticism was negatively related to all three types of justice climates. Further, consistent with social comparison theory, multilevel data analyses revealed that the relationship between individual justice perceptions and job attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction, commitment) was moderated by justice climate such that the relationships were stronger when justice climate was high

Apocalyptism, environmentalism and the other in Don DeLillo's End Zone, Great Jones Street and Ratner's Star
Throughout his writing, Don DeLillo has demonstrated a proclivity for thinking about the end. This subject emerges in various ways: through the discussion of nuclear war and chemical spills as well as an individual's fear of their inevitable demise. However, though DeLillo’s fiction may explore multiple meanings of ‘end’ and though our anxiety for the end may remain, the ability for us to understand or predict the end is constantly changing. In contemporary eco-criticism, critics suggest that apocalyptism paves the way for new forms of thinking about our environment, as well as our relationships with others. This essay will look at three novels from the 1970s, End Zone (1972) Great Jones Street (1973) and Ratner’s Star (1976) to trace how DeLillo creates fictions that think through the ethics of representation, in which ‘ending’ means to re-think our relationship to others. In doing this, he suggests that we must adapt our nuclear anxiety to form new social and ethical connections
MFGE8 does not influence chorio-retinal homeostasis or choroidal neovascularization in vivo
Purpose: Milk fat globule-epidermal growth factor-factor VIII (MFGE8) is necessary for diurnal outer segment phagocytosis and promotes VEGF-dependent neovascularization. The prevalence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in MFGE8 was studied in two exsudative or “wet” Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) groups and two corresponding control groups. We studied the effect of MFGE8 deficiency on retinal homeostasis with age and on choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in mice.
Methods: The distribution of the SNP (rs4945 and rs1878326) of MFGE8 was analyzed in two groups of patients with “wet” AMD and their age-matched controls from Germany and France. MFGE8-expressing cells were identified in Mfge8+/− mice expressing ß-galactosidase. Aged Mfge8+/− and Mfge8−/− mice were studied by funduscopy, histology, electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts of the choroid, and after laser-induced CNV.
Results: rs1878326 was associated with AMD in the French and German group. The Mfge8 promoter is highly active in photoreceptors but not in retinal pigment epithelium cells. Mfge8−/− mice did not differ from controls in terms of fundus appearance, photoreceptor cell layers, choroidal architecture or laser-induced CNV. In contrast, the Bruch's membrane (BM) was slightly but significantly thicker in Mfge8−/− mice as compared to controls.
Conclusions: Despite a reproducible minor increase of rs1878326 in AMD patients and a very modest increase in BM in Mfge8−/− mice, our data suggests that MFGE8 dysfunction does not play a critical role in the pathogenesis of AMD
Swings between rotation and accretion power in a millisecond binary pulsar
It is thought that neutron stars in low-mass binary systems can accrete
matter and angular momentum from the companion star and be spun-up to
millisecond rotational periods. During the accretion stage, the system is
called a low-mass X-ray binary, and bright X-ray emission is observed. When the
rate of mass transfer decreases in the later evolutionary stages, these
binaries host a radio millisecond pulsar whose emission is powered by the
neutron star's rotating magnetic field. This evolutionary model is supported by
the detection of millisecond X-ray pulsations from several accreting neutron
stars and also by the evidence for a past accretion disc in a rotation-powered
millisecond pulsar. It has been proposed that a rotation-powered pulsar may
temporarily switch on during periods of low mass inflow in some such systems.
Only indirect evidence for this transition has hitherto been observed. Here we
report observations of accretion-powered, millisecond X-ray pulsations from a
neutron star previously seen as a rotation-powered radio pulsar. Within a few
days after a month-long X-ray outburst, radio pulses were again detected. This
not only shows the evolutionary link between accretion and rotation-powered
millisecond pulsars, but also that some systems can swing between the two

Space-like (vs. time-like) collinear limits in QCD: is factorization violated?
We consider the singular behaviour of QCD scattering amplitudes in
kinematical configurations where two or more momenta of the external partons
become collinear. At the tree level, this behaviour is known to be controlled
by factorization formulae in which the singular collinear factor is universal
(process independent). We show that this strict (process-independent)
factorization is not valid at one-loop and higher-loop orders in the case of
the collinear limit in space-like regions (e.g., collinear radiation from
initial-state partons). We introduce a generalized version of all-order
collinear factorization, in which the space-like singular factors retain some
dependence on the momentum and colour charge of the non-collinear partons. We
present explicit results on one-loop and two-loop amplitudes for both the
two-parton and multiparton collinear limits. At the level of square amplitudes
and, more generally, cross sections in hadron--hadron collisions, the violation
of strict collinear factorization has implications on the non-abelian structure
of logarithmically-enhanced terms in perturbative calculations (starting from
the next-to-next-to-leading order) and on various factorization issues of mass

The ZEPLIN II dark matter detector: data acquisition system and data reduction
ZEPLIN-II is a two-phase (liquid/gas) xenon dark matter detector searching
for WIMP-nucleon interactions. In this paper we describe the data acquisition
system used to record the data from ZEPLIN-II and the reduction procedures

Exclusion limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross-section from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs low-temperature Ge and Si
detectors to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their
elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against
interactions of background particles. For recoil energies above 10 keV, events
due to background photons are rejected with >99.9% efficiency, and surface
events are rejected with >95% efficiency. The estimate of the background due to
neutrons is based primarily on the observation of multiple-scatter events that
should all be neutrons. Data selection is determined primarily by examining
calibration data and vetoed events. Resulting efficiencies should be accurate
to about 10%. Results of CDMS data from 1998 and 1999 with a relaxed
fiducial-volume cut (resulting in 15.8 kg-days exposure on Ge) are consistent
with an earlier analysis with a more restrictive fiducial-volume cut.
Twenty-three WIMP candidate events are observed, but these events are
consistent with a background from neutrons in all ways tested. Resulting limits
on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross-section exclude
unexplored parameter space for WIMPs with masses between 10-70 GeV c^{-2}.
These limits border, but do not exclude, parameter space allowed by
supersymmetry models and accelerator constraints. Results are compatible with
some regions reported as allowed at 3-sigma by the annual-modulation
measurement of the DAMA collaboration. However, under the assumptions of
standard WIMP interactions and a standard halo, the results are incompatible
with the DAMA most likely value at >99.9% CL, and are incompatible with the
model-independent annual-modulation signal of DAMA at 99.99% CL in the
