Preliminary results using a P300 brain-computer interface speller: a possible interaction effect between presentation paradigm and set of stimuli

Springer, ChamSeveral proposals to improve the performance controlling a P300-based BCI speller have been studied using the standard row-column presentation (RCP) par-adigm. However, this paradigm could not be suitable for those patients with lack of gaze control. To solve that, the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) para-digm, which presents the stimuli located in the same position, has been proposed in previous studies. Thus, the aim of the present work is to assess if a stimuli set of pictures that improves the performance in RCP, could also improve the per-formance in a RSVP paradigm. Six participants have controlled four conditions in a calibration task: letters in RCP, pictures in RCP, letters in RSVP and pictures in RSVP. The results showed that pictures in RCP obtained the best accuracy and information transfer rate. The improvement effect given by pictures was greater in the RCP paradigm than in RSVP. Noise Levels In An Urban Asian School Environment
Background noise is known to adversely affect speech perception and speech recognition. High levels of background noise in school classrooms may affect student learning, especially for those pupils who are learning in a second language. The current study aimed to determine the noise level and teacher speech-to-noise ratio (SNR) in Hong Kong classrooms. Noise level was measured in 146 occupied classrooms in 37 schools, including kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools and special schools, in Hong Kong. The mean noise levels in occupied kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and special school classrooms all exceeded recommended maximum noise levels, and noise reduction measures were seldom used in classrooms. The measured SNRs were not optimal and could have adverse implications for student learning and teachers’ vocal health. Schools in urban Asian environments are advised to consider noise reduction measures in classrooms to better comply with recommended maximum noise levels for classrooms.published_or_final_versio

Manipulating infrared photons using plasmons in transparent graphene superlattices
Superlattices are artificial periodic nanostructures which can control the
flow of electrons. Their operation typically relies on the periodic modulation
of the electric potential in the direction of electron wave propagation. Here
we demonstrate transparent graphene superlattices which can manipulate infrared
photons utilizing the collective oscillations of carriers, i.e., plasmons of
the ensemble of multiple graphene layers. The superlattice is formed by
depositing alternating wafer-scale graphene sheets and thin insulating layers,
followed by patterning them all together into 3-dimensional
photonic-crystal-like structures. We demonstrate experimentally that the
collective oscillation of Dirac fermions in such graphene superlattices is
unambiguously nonclassical: compared to doping single layer graphene,
distributing carriers into multiple graphene layers strongly enhances the
plasmonic resonance frequency and magnitude, which is fundamentally different
from that in a conventional semiconductor superlattice. This property allows us
to construct widely tunable far-infrared notch filters with 8.2 dB rejection
ratio and terahertz linear polarizers with 9.5 dB extinction ratio, using a
superlattice with merely five graphene atomic layers. Moreover, an unpatterned
superlattice shields up to 97.5% of the electromagnetic radiations below 1.2
terahertz. This demonstration also opens an avenue for the realization of other
transparent mid- and far-infrared photonic devices such as detectors,
modulators, and 3-dimensional meta-material systems.Comment: under revie
Antikaon production in nucleon-nucleon reactions near threshold
The antikaon production cross section from nucleon-nucleon reactions near
threshold is studied in a meson exchange model. We include both pion and kaon
exchange, but neglect the interference between the amplitudes. In case of pion
exchange the antikaon production cross section can be expressed in terms of the
antikaon production cross section from a pion-nucleon interaction, which we
take from the experimental data if available. Otherwise, a -resonance
exchange model is introduced to relate the different reaction cross sections.
In case of kaon exchange the antikaon production cross section is related to
the elastic and cross sections, which are again taken from
experimental measurements. We find that the one-meson exchange model gives a
satisfactory fit to the available data for the cross section
at high energies. We compare our predictions for the cross section near
threshold with an earlier empirical parameterization and that from phase space
