    Search for Gravitational Waves from Primordial Black Hole Binary Coalescences in the Galactic Halo

    We use data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for the gravitational waves from primordial black hole (PBH) binary coalescence with component masses in the range 0.2--1.0M1.0 M_\odot. The analysis requires a signal to be found in the data from both LIGO observatories, according to a set of coincidence criteria. No inspiral signals were found. Assuming a spherical halo with core radius 5 kpc extending to 50 kpc containing non-spinning black holes with masses in the range 0.2--1.0M1.0 M_\odot, we place an observational upper limit on the rate of PBH coalescence of 63 per year per Milky Way halo (MWH) with 90% confidence.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to Phys.     Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger

    On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta

    Innovation and growth in the UK pharmaceuticals: the case of product and marketing introductions

    New drug introductions are key to growth for pharmaceutical firms. However, not all innovations are the same and they may have differential effects that vary by firm size. We use quarterly sales data on UK pharmaceuticals in a dynamic panel model to estimate the impact of product (new drugs) and marketing (additional pack varieties) innovations within a therapeutic class on a firm’s business unit growth. We find that product innovations lead to substantial growth in both the short and long run, whereas a new pack variety only produces short-term effects. The strategies are substitutes but the marginal effects are larger for product innovations relative to additional packs, and the effects are larger for smaller business units. Nonetheless, pack introductions offer a viable short-term growth strategy, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses

    Cardiac imaging has had significant influence on the science and practice of pediatric cardiology. Especially the development and improvements made in noninasive imaging techniques, like echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have been extremely important. Technical advancements in the field of medical imaging are quickly being made. This review will focus on some of the important evolutions in pediatric cardiac imaging. Techniques such as intracardiac echocardiography, 3D echocardiography, and tissue Doppler imaging are relatively new echocardiographic techniques, which further optimize the anatomical and functional aspects of congenital heart disease. Also, the current standing of cardiac MRI and cardiac computerized tomography will be discussed. Finally, the recent European efforts to organize training and accreditation in pediatric echocardiography are highlighted

    Antihydrogen formation in low-energy antiproton collisions with excited-state positronium atoms

The convergent close-coupling method is used to obtain cross sections for antihydrogen formation in low-energy antiproton collisions with positronium (Ps) atoms in specified initial excited states with principal quantum numbers ni= 5. The threshold behaviour as a function of the Ps kinetic energy, E, is consistent with the 1/E law expected from threshold theory for all initial states. We find that the increase in the cross sections is muted above ni= 3 and that here their scaling is roughly consistent with ni2, rather than the classically expected increase as ni4

    Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme: Where are We Now?

    The compulsory Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) was introduced in 2007 for all surgical trainees in a bid to provide a platform for better trainee evaluation and assessment. Its introduction received a mixed response and a compulsory annual fee of £125 added to the financial burden now on surgical trainees as they undertake their training. An early appraisal among users discovered general dissatisfaction with the fee and, most importantly, what the ISCP actually offered them in terms of their training. Parallel to these findings, there has been anecdotal and published evidence that the ISCP format for assessment is not adhered to by senior trainers and that this is a result of a general apathy toward the ISCP among senior clinicians. </jats:p

    Novel behavioral assays were used to assess the role of the entorhinal cortex in modulating attention to components of stimulus compounds. In Stage 1, rats received discrimination training with compounds constructed from 3 dimensions (auditory, visual, and tactile); in each compound the combination of components from 2 dimensions (e.g., auditory and visual) were relevant to the solution of the discrimination, and the remaining dimension (e.g., tactile) was irrelevant. In Stage 2, rats received a different discrimination in which the relevant dimensions were either congruent (auditory and visual) or incongruent (auditory and tactile) with those that were relevant in Stage 1. Sham-operated rats acquired the congruent discrimination more rapidly than the incongruent discrimination--a finding indicative of a process of attentional modulation--whereas rats with excitotoxic lesions of the entorhinal cortex acquired both discriminations equally readily
