Testing high resolution SD ADC’s by using the noise transfer function
A new solution to improve the testability of high resolution SD Analogue to Digital Converters (SD ADC’s) using the quantizer input as test node is described. The theoretical basis for the technique is discussed and results from high level simulations for a 16 bit, 4th order, audio ADC are presented. The analysis demonstrates the potential to reduce the computational effort associated with test response analysis versus conventional techniques
Ostrogradsky in Theories with Multiple Fields
We review how the (absence of) Ostrogradsky instability manifests itself in
theories with multiple fields. It has recently been appreciated that when
multiple fields are present, the existence of higher derivatives may not
automatically imply the existence of ghosts. We discuss the connection with
gravitational theories like massive gravity and beyond Horndeski which manifest
higher derivatives in some formulations and yet are free of Ostrogradsky ghost.
We also examine an interesting new class of Extended Scalar-Tensor Theories of
gravity which has been recently proposed. We show that for a subclass of these
theories, the tensor modes are either not dynamical or are infinitely strongly
coupled. Among the remaining theories for which the tensor modes are
well-defined one counts one new model that is not field-redefinable to
Horndeski via a conformal and disformal transformation but that does require
the vacuum to break Lorentz invariance. We discuss the implications for the
effective field theory of dark energy and the stability of the theory.Comment: references update
Time-Varying Quantiles
A time-varying quantile can be fitted to a sequence of observations by formulating a time series model for the corresponding population quantile and iteratively applying a suitably modified state space signal extraction algorithm. Quantiles estimated in this way provide information on various aspects of a time series, including dispersion,
asymmetry and, for financial applications, value at risk. Tests for the constancy of quantiles, and associated contrasts, are constructed using indicator variables; these tests have a similar form to stationarity tests and, under the null hypothesis, their asymptotic distributions belong to the Cramér von Mises family. Estimates of the quantiles at the end of the series provide the basis for forecasting. As such they offer an alternative to conditional quantile autoregressions and, at the same time, give some insight into their structure and potential drawbacks
Vielbein to the Rescue?
Non-minimal matter couplings have recently been considered in the context of
massive gravity and multi-gravity. These couplings are free of the
Boulware-Deser ghost in the decoupling limit and can thus be considered within
an Effective Field Theory setup. Beyond the decoupling limit the ghost was
shown to reemerge in the metric formulation of the theory. Recently it was
argued that this pathology is absent when formulated in terms of unconstrained
vielbeins. We investigate this possibility and show that the Boulware-Deser
ghost is always present beyond the decoupling limit in any dimension larger
than two. We also show that the metric and vielbein formulations have an
identical ghost-free decoupling limit. Finally we extend these arguments to
more generic multi-gravity theories and argue that for any dimension larger
than two a ghost is also present in the vielbein formulation whenever the
symmetric vielbein condition is spoiled and the equivalence with the metric
formulation is lost.Comment: accepted for publication in PR
Slime mould imitation of Belgian transport networks: redundancy, bio-essential motorways, and dissolution
Belgium is amongst few artificial countries, established on purpose, when
Dutch and French speaking parts were joined in a single unit. This makes
Belgium a particularly interesting testbed for studying bio-inspired techniques
for simulation and analysis of vehicular transport networks. We imitate growth
and formation of a transport network between major urban areas in Belgium using
the acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum. We represent the urban areas
with the sources of nutrients. The slime mould spans the sources of nutrients
with a network of protoplasmic tubes. The protoplasmic tubes represent the
motorways. In an experimental laboratory analysis we compare the motorway
network approximated by P. polycephalum and the man-made motorway network of
Belgium. We evaluate the efficiency of the slime mould network and the motorway
network using proximity graphs
