    Avalanche amplification of a single exciton in a semiconductor nanowire

    Interfacing single photons and electrons is a crucial ingredient for sharing quantum information between remote solid-state qubits. Semiconductor nanowires offer the unique possibility to combine optical quantum dots with avalanche photodiodes, thus enabling the conversion of an incoming single photon into a macroscopic current for efficient electrical detection. Currently, millions of excitation events are required to perform electrical read-out of an exciton qubit state. Here we demonstrate multiplication of carriers from only a single exciton generated in a quantum dot after tunneling into a nanowire avalanche photodiode. Due to the large amplification of both electrons and holes (> 10^4), we reduce by four orders of magnitude the number of excitation events required to electrically detect a single exciton generated in a quantum dot. This work represents a significant step towards single-shot electrical read-out and offers a new functionality for on-chip quantum information circuits

    Simulation of inter and intra group behaviors using semantic virtual environments

    Simulação de situações cotidianas da vida real pode ser uma ferramenta muito útil em aplicações de entretenimento e sistemas de treinamento. Essas aplicações, como jogos ou filmes de Computação Gráfica, normalmente precisam ter ambientes virtuais povoados com agentes virtuais autônomos. Geralmente, os agentes precisam ser aptos a evoluir no seu ambiente, evitando colisões com obstáculos e outros agentes, além de interagir com outros personagens a fim de reproduzir simulações realistas. Este trabalho apresenta um modelo para simular o comportamento de grupos de forma coerente, baseado em modelagem procedural e ambientes semânticos. O foco principal é simular agentes conectados ao ambiente virtual que eles estão evoluindo, que é principalmente aplicado em segundo plano nos jogos ou filmes, gerados com pouca ou nenhuma intervenção do usuário.Simulation of everyday situations from real life can be a very useful tool in entertainment applications and training systems. Such applications, as games or computer animated movies usually need to provide virtual environments populated with virtual autonomous agents. Commonly, the agents need to be able to evolve in their environment, avoiding collision with each other and obstacles, besides interacting with other characters in order to provide realistic simulations. This work presents a model to simulate coherent group behaviors based on procedural modeling and semantic environments. The main focus is to provide agents connected to the virtual environment they are evolving, mainly applied in the background of games or movies generated with few/without user intervention

    O papel da turbinectomia inferiorparcial endoscópica narinosseptoplastia : um ensaio clínico randomizado com avaliação de qualidade de vida

    Objetivos: Avaliar o papel da turbinectomia inferior parcial endoscópica (TIPE) na rinosseptoplastia primária sobre os desfechos de qualidade de vida, complicações e tempo cirúrgico. Delineamento: Ensaio clínico pragmático, randomizado, duplo-cego em um centro único e de grupos paralelos. Métodos: Indivíduos maiores de 16 anos, com queixas estéticas e obstrução nasal, candidatos à rinosseptoplastia primária, avaliados entre março de 2014 e maio de 2015, em um Hospital Terciário Universitário no Brasil. Pacientes elegíveis foram randomizados para receberem ou não TIPE concomitantemente à cirurgia. Desfechos: Diferença absoluta dos escores pré e pós-operatórios em qualidade de vida específica, pela aplicação dos questionários Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation Portuguese (NOSE-p) e Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation (ROE), e geral, através de aplicação do World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-breve. Os desfechos eram cegados e acessados somente três meses após a cirurgia. O protocolo foi registrado no ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02231216). Resultados: 50 pacientes foram incluídos, maioria caucasiana com rinite alérgica com sintomas moderados a severos. A média de idade foi 36 (±14,5) anos. Os escores de qualidade de vida específicos e gerais melhoraram independentemente da intervenção TIPE (p 0,05). Não houve diferença entre os grupos sobre a presença de complicações. O tempo cirúrgico foi maior no grupo TIPE (212 minutos ± 7,8 vs. 159,1 ± 5,6; p ˂ 0,001). Conclusão: A redução das conchas inferiores através da TIPE durante a rinosseptoplastia primária não melhorou, em curto prazo, a qualidade de vida geral nem específica. O uso de TIPE aumenta o tempo cirúrgico consideravelmente, sem adicionar benefício aos escores avaliados. Não houve diferença na incidência de complicações no pós-operatório, sugerindo a segurança da técnica.Objectives/Hypothesis: To evaluate the impact of endoscopic partial inferior turbinectomy (EPIT) associated with primary Rhinoseptoplasty on quality of life outcomes (QOL), complications, and surgical duration. Study Design: Randomized clinical trial. Methods: Individuals with nasal obstruction aged ≥ 16 years who were candidates for functional and aesthetics primary Rhinoseptoplasty were evaluated from March 2014 through May 2015 at a tertiary university hospital in Brazil. Eligible participants were randomly allocated to rhinoseptoplasty with or without EPIT. Outcomes: Absolute change (postoperative –preoperative) in the following QOL scores: Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation-Portuguese (NOSE-p), Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation (ROE) and World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-bref (to measure general QOL). Outcomes were blindly assessed 3 months postoperatively. The protocol was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02231216). Results: Fifty patients were studied. Most were Caucasian and had moderate/severe allergic rhinitis symptoms. Mean age was 36 (±14.5) years. Rhinoseptoplasty was associated with improvement in all QOL scores irrespective of turbinate intervention (P 0.05). There were no differences between the groups regarding presence of the complications. Surgical duration was higher in the EPIT group (212 minutes ± 7.8 vs. 159.1 ± 5.6; p ˂ 0.001). Conclusions: Turbinate reduction through EPIT during primary rhinoseptoplasty did not improve short-term general and specific QOL outcomes. The use of EPIT increases surgical time considerably without improving QOL scores. There was no difference in postoperative incidence of complications, suggesting that EPIT is a safe technique

    La movilidad enunciativa y el desarrollo de la lengua oral en 1° año de la Educación Básica

    This work is part of a master's thesis which emerges from two investigations carried out at the Faculty of Education (FED) of the National University of Cuyo (UNCuyo). The objective is to analyze one of the predictors of written language: enunciative mobility, which has been scarcely investigated in Spanish, and the development of oral language in children aged five and six, in relation to the acquisition of the written language. To achieve this, we worked especially with the research on this problem carried out by Darrault (2000). To obtain the corpus, a pre-test was carried out with 5-year-old students, from two rooms, from an urban public school, of medium sociocultural level in the province of Mendoza; one room functioned as an experimental group and the other as a control group. In the first semester of 2019, a didactic sequence was applied in the first group with the purpose of developing their ability to mobilize sentences and develop oral language; the second group continued with the official plan. At the end of the school year, the post-test was given in both courses. We will present the main problems detected in the children at the time of mobilizing their statements and how the didactic mediation program was approached. The achievement expectations focus on overcoming the difficulties of the pretest in the participating students of the experimental group. The transfer of the final results will be of great importance in the educational area, both in the learning of the written language and in the prevention of school failure.Este trabajo se enmarca en una tesis de maestría que se desprende de dos investigaciones que se llevan adelante en la Facultad de Educación (FED) de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNCuyo). El objetivo es analizar uno de los predictores de la lengua escrita: la movilidad enunciativa, que ha sido escasamente investigada en español, y el desarrollo de la lengua oral en niños de cinco y seis años, en relación con la adquisición de la lengua escrita. Para lograrlo, se trabajó especialmente con las investigaciones sobre esta problemática realizadas por Darrault (2000). Para la obtención del corpus se realizó un pretest en el que participaron estudiantes de 5 años de dos salas de una escuela pública urbana, de nivel sociocultural medio de la provincia de Mendoza; una sala funcionó como grupo experimental y la otra, como grupo control. En el primer cuatrimestre de 2019 se aplicó una secuencia didáctica en el primer grupo, con el propósito de desarrollar su capacidad de movilizar enunciados y desarrollar la lengua oral; el segundo grupo siguió con el plan oficial. Al concluir el ciclo lectivo se tomó un postest en ambos cursos. Presentaremos los principales problemas detectados en los niños al momento de movilizar sus enunciados y cómo se abordó el programa de mediación didáctica. Las expectativas de logro se centran en superar las dificultades del pretest en los alumnos participantes del grupo experimental. La transferencia de los resultados finales será de gran importancia en el área educativa, tanto en el aprendizaje de la lengua escrita como en la prevención del fracaso escolar
