    Get PDF
This article is an attempt to accept completely the metaphysical claim that motivated Tarde’s thought: the concept that reality consists of neither static substances nor representations but rather of authentic human and non-human subjects. Tarde’s unprecedented extension of the notion of subject to all aspects of reality assumes, we feel, a new relevance today in the links between nature and subjectivities. Nature is not a material reality in the face of subjects that represent it and on which they project their values, their aesthetic dimensions and their representations; in Tarde’s view, nature becomes the home of countless subjective activities connected with one another

Monadology and ethnography: Towards a Tardian monadic

    Get PDF
This article outlines the project of a ‘monadic ethnography’ based on Gabriel Tarde’s monadology. Tarde’s key contention is that ‘everything is a society’, i.e. that the world is made up of composite and relational entities of infinitesimal complexity called monads. These assemblages of heterogeneous elements engaged in relations of mutual possession constitute the object of study of ‘monadic ethnography’. Their analysis, in turn, has a series of methodological and formal implications, including a transformation of concepts of scale, spatiality and temporality and the need to find representational strategies suitable for conveying the monads’ dynamic qualities. A fieldwork example which discusses the making of a car part in a small workshop based in the Can Ricart factory in Barcelona is provided. Throughout the article, the idea of ‘monadic ethnography’ is discussed in relation to the recent rediscovery of Tarde’s work, the work of Bruno Latour and Gilles Deleuze, and the so-called ‘ontological turn’ in the social sciences

    Qu'est-ce qu'une subjectivité non-humaine? L'héritage néo-monadologique de B. Latour

This article proposes a reading of Bruno Latour's work by inscribing his thought within a « neomonadological » tradition. The specificity of this approach consists in simultaneously detaching the subject from anthropological questions and nature from the idea of an innate substance. In short: such a philosophy calls for a pluralistic conception of nature made of various levels of human and non-human subjectivities.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
